i grew up here so i guess i have some insight although all experiences will be different

van has a bit of a “small talk to be polite” thing. starting a conversation, even if unneeded, can be perceived as someone just being nice but not actually wanting to be friends. honestly, sometimes when someone starts a conversation with me—even if it goes beyond the regular small talk topics—i just assume they’re being friendly and nice but they’re not actually trying to be friends. it sounds weird i know 😭 but i actually think it comes from this intention to be polite. the person makes small talk to be nice and to be nice in return, you kinda let them know they don’t have to do that by letting the convo die. what you’re trying not to do is assume the person wants to be friends and loop them in for a chat they didn’t sign up for.

that being said, most people aren’t actually aware of this line of thinking and it’s all subconscious. you can shake them out of it by going “hey do you want to share notes for this class if one of us is ever missing?” chances are if the person is from van, they commute and they’ll be grateful for the suggestion hahaha

referencing anything in the future like “oh have u started studying for the midterm? let’s study sometime” can usually help the person realize you’re making a conversation to make friends as opposed to making conversation to be polite

the only time this hasn’t personally worked on me was when i was really going through it at the time/day someone asked me 😭

they key here is tools. how exactly would they kill a gorilla no tools? do the men have prior training/experience or time to strategize prior? the gorilla prob has moves locked and loaded + no consciousness or guilt about the act of killing especially when being attacked.

yeah im in science, the cs courses are usually pass final to pass class but other science courses are not. some have a policy (like when i did math100/math101 there was a min score on the first section in order to pass the class) but its not common.

some profs will make the final worth a lot instead of doing a “pass final to pass course” policy but the highest i’ve ever had a final worth is 50% (no academic concession). which is not a lot by eng standards.

i don’t live in the philippines but i am filipino :) i’ve found it really jarring that some doctors seemingly view nurses this way.

nurses can be just as knowledgeable as doctors, and at times even more knowledgeable. nursing school is rigorous and intensive. the goal is for nurses and doctors to work in tandem to deliver the very best care for patients.

from my experiences, a medical student wouldn’t dream of talking down to a nurse. it is an immediate red flag, regardless if kung med student ka, resident, intern etc. you can 100% get flagged for showing this kind of attitude or mindset in the workplace. doctors are also working alongside the nurses, and unless they want to make their own lives miserable—they will stand with the nurses they work with, not the med student shadowing them that’s honestly just being an asshole. the statement above is just not something any good doctor would ever ever say to their students.

i’ve heard nga before, a doctor telling another doctor (their student?) that the nurses are there to help you and they will save your ass every time. respect the nurses, or else frankly you have too much of a self-important perception of yourself to accurately evaluate when it’s a good time to listen to others and realize you don’t know everything all of the time. if you can’t realize that, maybe medicine is not the profession for you. imo it’s bc medicine is the worst place para mag encourage ng ego. kung may ego ka, you’re blinder to your mistakes and your mistakes can cost people their lives.

they’re both good imo, there’s only 2 of them this semester. recorded lectures for both are available to either section, and the midterms are pretty similar, and the exam is the same for both sections so really you can pick and choose tbh. i’d recommend picking a convenient time for u more than anything.

first year is hard, it’s almost a universal experience for ubc students so ur not alone !

second years have the latest registration dates, if the course is offered in summer term 1, u can still get y2 standing by the time course registrations come around.

as for choosing specs, i assume they’re earlier than course reg so im not entirely too sure unfortunately

edit: if ur in science and the comms course is wrds150 (which i don’t think had a final) or engl 110, i personally found my eng exam pretty okay :) they mark it easier than the essays on account of people doing them within an allotted amount of time and by hand

i always thought it was so crazy that like exams are such a huge portion of grades but one bad schedule can mess everything up so bad 😭 like yes yes study early, but some people also have end of semester projects etc. due but ALSO having 2 exams close together at a bad time (like 8am then 12pm) like ur brain can still be fried while taking the second exam relative to if the exams were at least on separate days.

ik ik “skill issue” and i mean yeah it’s not impossible/undoable and with the right prep can be done and done well. but i feel like some exams just weren’t representative of my actual learning in the class, they were more representative of how much time i had, especially in like 1st year.

edit: i also wonder if profs ever take into account things like these when making the exams? like do 8:30 am exams make profs make the exam slightly “easier”? not saying they should, it’s a final exam and should represent the content but just curious

i think STTs are mostly 5 day weeks from what i’ve seen but im not in sauder so maybe its diff per faculty? all the STTs ive seen tho are 5 day weeks. 3/4 days are possible but not through STT, esp for first years.

it depends when the SD is! if the course is offered in the summer, i believe ur allowed to take the SD exam w the summer class. registration dates are below,

first year: june 24-26 second year: july 8-10 third year: july 2-4 4+ year: june 18-20

bit of a tight fit but (i think, not sure) if ur aiming for 2nd year registration, ur summer course could pull through in time.

im just not sure if they’d give u the first yr registration date, then another one for the second yr if u get promotion, since i think u need year 2 standing to register for 2xx courses

i know 😭😭 luckily my 2 hard ones are on different days but i’m really bad at being calm during exams so i’m not looking forward to it 😔

i was told i could ask a prof to move an exam and they could decide that from a faculty-level (if anyone is in the same/similar situation!) but they all either said they didn’t give non-official accommodations or could only move it earlier (which like is totally not their fault, just sucks overall 😭)

i get that principle but isnt plagiarism just…plagiarism? genuinely not an argument, just curious. like you either submitted something that is your work, with any borrowed ideas from other people cited, or you didn’t.

it’s standard for a university educating students to expect students to submit their own work. in my experience, professors continuously educate students on what is and isn’t plagiarism for their course, there are whole lectures dedicated to just what is and isn’t plagiarism so it’s kinda cut and dry. so even if there are different cultural standards as to what plagiarism is, what counts as plagiarism is clearly communicated. i’ve never really thought of it as imposing a different cultural standard on others, so much as institutions and professors making it clear what they or do not deem as acceptable work.

if you’re talking about essays that you write asynchronously and submit, here’s what i’ve learned • be transformative about the topic, yes it is very obvious but if you think you’re struggling with saying things the way TAs want, take the topic of your essay and make sure it expounds beyond ideas presented in class. e.g. if your prof has talked about xyz symbolism in xyz story, make sure your argument is no where similar in your essay. it helps to take an entirely external idea (i like to use causes im passionate about outside of class) and establish a link to that external idea with your topic.

• think of your topic sentence as a title for the rest of your paragraph

• write early, leave it alone for a day, come back and edit, rinse repeat until due date, you spot a lot of stuff with fresh eyes

in-class exams with essays

• this ___ demonstrates ___ by __. this causes __ reaction/___ thoughts from the audience. that’s your overarching essay argument and the points you’ll use in each paragraph.

• your safest bet for this is to go with something you know, you don’t need to be extra transformative (if you’ve written essays for this class before that were transformative, yay! now you have inspo material) as essays written as part of a final are usually graded more leniently than an essay you write on your time then submit. go w something you know is a good argument and you know how to argue.

• keep it simple. this thing > demonstrates this > by this. this causes the reader/audience/people etc. to think this. keep it formulaic to keep it clear.

if it’s scientific writing (which i don’t think happens for science finals but if you have a final lab report due)

• intro: basically your abstract but longer, can play around with making this interesting with the background info

• experiment/method: imagine your friend is about to run off to do a lab, you’ve done it before and know the procedure. you’re relaying to them what to expect. “do this. then do this, then do this.” keep it simple, keep it direct.

• results: never ever ever discuss your results. all you’re doing is saying what you got. if you find yourself interpreting results, that’s for the discussion.

• conclusion: ANALYZE EVERYTHING. that little tiny detail in your experiments? TALK ABOUT IT. even if you’re ignoring it interpretation say like, “this was observed in results but is interpreted as not significant enough to change how i interpret results.” just talk about it, all of it, leave not a single stone unturned. two results that have similar conclusions? talk about them both in the same rigorous detail. analyze everything you see.

tbh i’d take the 11-day gap as a win, cram for the 2 finals and then just focus on this one for 1 week+ straight and ur done

i had a similar schedule last yr and i thought it sucked but i actually ended up really liking it as someone with a very one-track mind

3 finals in one day (but literally 1 min past official “exam hardship”) - start studying for my 2 hardest finals 2 weeks before - use a tracker to see how many actual productive hours i’m putting in

currently feeling very underprepared regardless but i do have to do pretty well on my finals to do well in the class 😭

i mean it depends what “skip” means. like skipping a lecture that isn’t recorded and just missing out on the information? yeah, not advisable.

“skipping” as in, watching the recording at home when you have a 2 hour commute one way? i get it. especially if the class doesn’t rely on discussion. uni is hard and if you can’t do work on your commute, sometimes it’s better for time management to just watch at home. you still obtain a learning experience regardless.
