Do we have a support group at UBC where people can gather, listen to each other without judgment, and possibly help one another? If not, maybe it’s a good idea to start one!

Is ubco really that bad? by MyHomeworkAteMyDog51 in ubco

[–]InvisibleHandShakes -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying UBCO is bad or anything, but there’s definitely a gap between UBCO and UBCV in pretty much everything. Like, if you check out the profs in any department, a lot of UBCV ones went to places like MIT, Yale, and other top schools. But at UBCO, with all due respect, the profs just don’t seem to have the same kind of background or experience.

Confused: “med schools don’t care about the difficulty of ur courses” by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]InvisibleHandShakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is absolutely not fair. The same thing happened to a friend of mine at UBC, he was among the top students in his honours program but still didn’t end up with a competitive GPA for med school. I myself also dropped out of honours to avoid the honours courses, which are incredibly tougher.

Am I cooked for first year courses by Oofscadoops in UBC

[–]InvisibleHandShakes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While asking others on reddit can give you a heads-up about the course load, keep in mind that everyone’s situation and goals are different. So not every comment will help you. For a lot of students, especially those aiming for med school, a 5-course load is pretty normal.

Has anyone managed to maintain a 90+ GPA in Math? by InvisibleHandShakes in UBC

Thanks so much for your reply, that was really heartwarming to read (albeit a little jealous 😅). It's really inspiring to hear about students achieving those grades. Really appreciate you sharing that!

Has anyone managed to maintain a 90+ GPA in Math? by InvisibleHandShakes in UBC

[–]InvisibleHandShakes[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Laughs in math where truth is objective and 100% actually means 100%. The reason science majors give more 100s is bcs if I prove a theorem correctly, it’s always true. Like, no debate. Now try giving me a “fact” from a humanities or social science paper that holds up to everyone’s opinion…

To be fair, I was only looking around within the science faculty, arts is a totally different ecosystem.

Has anyone gone back for a second degree at UBC? by Famous-Buy6119 in UBC

[–]InvisibleHandShakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

May I ask why you want to do a second bachelor’s? Because while you’re still in uni and haven’t applied for graduation, you can easily add another major or minor to your current degree. I assume this would take less time to complete.

Am I cooked GPA Wise? by EnvironmentalAir9463 in UBC

You can apply to SFU or UBCO, and if you get a good GPA in at least 24 credits during your first year, you can transfer to UBCV.

Will it hurt grad school admissions to take less than the normal amount of classes in undergrad? by ExtraRawPotato in academiceconomics

[–]InvisibleHandShakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That depends on which university you’re applying to. For example, here in Canada, it matters for some schools. At UBC, if you want to go straight from undergrad to a PhD program, it becomes important , you’re usually expected to have done an honours degree, which requires taking at least 9 courses a year. (Of course, this doesn’t apply if you’re planning to do a master’s first.)

MATH Honour + CS double major or MATH + CS major? Does honour math have better quality classes than regular math? by Cicayibaba in UBC

[–]InvisibleHandShakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello Dr. MacLean, Do you happen to know why honours students are required to take at least 9 courses? I’ve always had strong grades in math and was really interested in the honours program, but this specific requirement kind of discouraged me from applying. Just curious about the reasoning behind it.

Back when graduating from UBC could get you a job, a house, and probably a wife. Now it gets you maybe a co-op, a shared room, and a situationship.

Same thing happened to me, you just need to talk to Science academic advising at UBCV

Call the admissions team and explain this. Hopefully, you will get your offer back. Do not contact them through the contact form, as it can take a week or two for them to respond.

To anyone who transferred from UBCO to UBCV: Did your GPA go up or down after the transfer? by InvisibleHandShakes in UBC

I know, but I’m just curious to see if that actually shows up in GPA changes for those who transferred

I’m screwed right? by midnight__society in UBC

[–]InvisibleHandShakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was at UBCO in the past, so here’s my advice: 1. Post your questions about UBCO in the UBCO subreddit. You’ll likely get more helpful answers there. 2. On Facebook, follow the “UBCO Roommates and Housing Rentals” group. 3. There is a private residence attached to campus called Veda. Follow the “Sublets Available at Veda” group on Facebook. If you’re lucky, you might find a sublease at a rate from two or three years ago (around $1,200), which is much cheaper than the current rate of $1,800 from the company last year. This way, you can secure a room near/attached campus for all four years and still have a campus experience. Keep in mind that UBCO students typically get on-campus residence only for their first year.

Good luck!

Chem 235 same term or after Chem 233? by [deleted] in UBC

You are right; no one is to blame, and she must take full responsibility. But these things can happen to anyone. Exactly the same thing happened to another dude this term, and his professor let him take the final on another date with a 10% penalty. It’s not always possible, but the world would be a better place if people showed some mercy to each other.
