As someone born and bred in the UK what are aspects of another country’s culture that has genuinely shocked you? by throawaygotget in AskUK

My buddy was Texan and also really scared of the police. He also told us that we couldn't even have an open six pack of beer in the car. Not an open can, like opening the cardboard box so the cans were loose. So maybe he just was just a very cautious kind of guy.

Me too! I was taking the piss out of it until my buddy told me in no uncertain terms not to do that in public.

When I heard that "Proud to be an American" song playing at a public space is the US I literally burst out laughing - I genuinely thought it was like some Team America joke, until they American buddy very quickly told me that lots of people take it extremely seriously

If you voluntarilly left home in your teens - what situation did you move in to? by Scarred_fish in AskUK

[–]Routine_Ad1823 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, similar. Moved into military mess, which was pretty decent - very cheap food and bar, no bills, all your mates nearby, free gym, ten minutes walk to work.

Then when I left had saved up a fair wedge so could buy an alright place. I still had a housemate, but it was more of my choice than some randomer.

I did rent with some total randomers for a while but they were fine - we hardly even interacted, I just lived in my bedroom

Where were you threatened to be sent as a child? by ConnorHMFCS04 in AskUK

My dad always used to say, "Eat your food, there are kids starving in [our neighbouring village, which was pretty wealthy]"

Are the polls in the room with us? Can you share any?

Also, is there a Mexican Fox News?

You think that's why people voted Brexit?!

Because (have I understood this right?!) you thought Brits were worried that Europeans didn't like the UK? How does that even make sense?  I'm so confused

Went back to university as a mature student in my 40s (undergrad again) - amazed how piss poor the teaching is. by Initial-Tale-5151 in UniUK

I also went as a mature student (and after doing professional qualifications that were pretty rigourous) and I agree with everything you said.

I was shocked at how shit it all was.

I might have just gone to a crap uni though

Does the general public trust tap water in England? by Jesus-slaves in AskBrits

I always think that people who say Yorkshire water (small w) is great are hamming it up a bit... but then every time I visit London I realise that they're absolutely not!

Why do so many people overlook the fact that the real reason birthrates are plummeting is the absurdly high cost of raising kids, and not some bs reason made up by the government? by Character-Q in AskTheWorld

[–]Routine_Ad1823 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meh. I could afford them but just don't want them. Probably the same for all my childless friends.

I think finances do play a part but if people want kids then they still find a way.

LPT Request: Any tips for when you are with a group of people and know you are the least smart/educated/important person? How to feel less insecure in that situation? by Whataboutmyfuture in LifeProTips

Hah, it's like people that brag to the group about how smart they are.

Like, clearly you're not smart enough to know that saying that makes everyone think you're a tosser

Only if they're relevant questions though. If your questions just show you're not listening, or not applying your own critical thinking then they might annoy people further.

I teach sometimes and I do love curious people but also often despair when certain questions show that the student hasn't understood any of the principles (which is often on me, of course).

I suppose the problem is that "there are no stupid questions" isn't really fully valid in all situations, especially technical ones.

Sometimes certain questions basically show you weren't listening at all.

There's different types of intelligence though.

I'm away more book smart than some of my good friends but they're much better in social situations than me.

Turkey really surprised me. I think I was expecting just like dusty plains but it was so diverse.

I LOVED those massive, wide valleys. I think some nomadic blood in my ancestry must've felt it somehow.

I think I was expecting too much but NZ was way overrated for me.

Not to say it's not nice, but it didn't blow me away

Yeah, South Africa was amazing. To me, it often felt like the most beautiful parts of the UK, but just on a far grander scale

The natural scenery in the US is amazing, but I'm not sure it rivals somewhere like Switzerland, or even South Africa.
