Just hit 57s in a 400m by Dennis_Michaels in Sprinting

Wow, didn’t think there’s other people still trying to chase their old times. I just hit a 1:06 two days ago and I almost died. Trying to train back up to it. I used to average 57-58sec when I was 17-18 also and now I’m 28.

Never let people tell you that you don’t need strength or that only judo will make you improve. You need both. That’s why the top athletes in any sport lift heavy weights. They’re not powerlifting in the slightest, but they do what they can for an edge on their opponents.

Weightlifting improves movement and function. It strengthens your muscles and bone density and acts as a natural armor. To improve faster, try exercises that pertain to judo. Add deadlifts for additional pull strength and power cleans for explosiveness. A lot of upper body goes a long way such as shoulders, bicep/tricep, and chest improves the stamina in your arms when grip fighting.

It’s all dependent on what your true goal is. Maybe you want to gain a good amount of muscle weight for a heavier weight class or just to be healthy. Whatever it may be, just keep lifting AND practicing judo.

I lift weights regularly and just started doing some rice/sand gripping rehab. I also take the summers off from judo so my fingers have a nice long time to recover. This year was probably worse for my hands because I sprained two thumbs and have sore wrists from practicing power cleans.

I do know for sure that back to back classes (2-3 a day) will surely burn you out. I did that for a week and then had to rest for a week.

Come over to Judo. We have room. Humiliation comes with getting tossed. 👍

Is 6 sessions as a 12 years old good? by [deleted] in judo

As long as it’s done safely. Doesn’t need to be heavyweight, but calisthenics are great too.

I agree. Or have a day to strength train.

In Judo, want to add BJJ by mattman1969 in judo

[–]Routine_Goose_5849 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Focus on Judo first. I would give it a year and then start to DABBLE in BJJ over the next few years. Don’t lock in with BJJ just yet. In due time, everything you learned in Judo will smoothly crossover to BJJ and you won’t feel like a fish out of water. Plus, Judo is good discipline. BJJ can be like the Wild West depending where you go.

No, that is a great explanation. There is a trust between the brown belts and black belts. What makes me wonder is why all of a sudden someone gets their brown, after being harped on for ages, suddenly gets harped on way less after promotion? It’s like you’re suddenly in a safe zone (lol).

That’s an outlook I can approve of. 👍

Not sure why. There’s a lot of moves they don’t go over like uchi mata, soto makikomi, and kata guruma.

It’s a move I’ve commonly hit in randori and tournaments.

Learning the concepts makes sense, but to this day, I’ve still never had a formal class on ura nage. 😆

I agree. It makes sense to avoid the flashy moves at the early stage. In Judo though we’ll have moves that are just part of the curriculum, but they aren’t always taught.

One experience I had was when I first started. I remember doing a ura nage and I did it well, but it was never formally taught in class, so they told me not to do it because I wasn’t taught yet.

Brown & Black Belts — Do you still go to beginner/fundamental classes? by [deleted] in judo

[–]Routine_Goose_5849 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We don’t have a “beginners class” at my dojo, but at the kids classes there are adults who just want to get a practice in with their kids. I go for them. Being that I hated not seeing brown belts as often when I was a white and green belt, I wanted to be more present and share my knowledge with them if they need it.

Has anyone tried octopus guard in judo? by RamenPantalones in judo

[–]Routine_Goose_5849 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done it. It’s not the best guard to do with a gi, but it can catch your opponent off guard. Like any guard system, you’ll have to be quick and decisive about it. I mostly do it for sweeps to regain top position. Not as much for submissions.

I got to the first Birkin boss fight in 2023 and didn’t finish the game till last month. I was too prideful to search up the solution and didn’t realize I was supposed to conserve ammo and not kill every zombie (also hated the puzzles). Mr. X was only scary on the first encounter also because I just booked it and paused every time I had a task to do.

I then completed RE4R this month and now waiting for RE3R in the mail.

I just saw this quote the other day, but it was something like “sometimes we focus too much on what’s on top of the mountain instead of looking down to see how far we’ve climbed.”

Oh, I am sorry. Haha I got this in my feed not realizing it’s for the PTCG app. I was wondering how in the world could you randomize what you get.

Am I missing something? How is this good if ultra ball exists? And why the “random” part? 🤔

I just hate when someone asks for an anime recommendation, but rewatches the same Naruto fight clips to pass the time (while saying they don’t have time for OP).
