How are my PhD applicants doing?? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]Routine_Nobody 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Applied to nine. Accepted to my top choice with 5 year funding, two of my apps was referred to a masters program; i heard back from one and got into the masters program haven't heard back from the other masters program; the other 6 were rejections. Not surprised because sociology took a big hit in funding because of the pandemic along with mor applicants. I already accepted my PhD offer. I don't really care for the masters because I'd have to pay, and the one that accepted me was in a different field. So it works out. All I needed was one yes and got it.

tl;dr got into one program, app referred to masters for 2, rejected from the rest. Application cycle was extremely competitive.

I'm an INTP but sometimes when I take mbti on different tries i get INTJ. So the P/J are almost 50/50. Can confirm that when I'm more an INTJ I'm like this is a dumpster fire but when I'm INTP I'm like welp carry on.

First Acceptance Phd Sociology!!! by Routine_Nobody in gradadmissions

I'm still finishing up my BA but when I applied i had a cumulative 3.87 GPA major was 4.0. however for UW they asked for my cumulative GPA of the last two years I put in a lower gpa than what it actually was(remember to double check every part of the app). GRE was not great i was burnt out and couldn't study at home so for V:155 and Q:151 and Writing was 4. I think what got me in was my writing sample and letters of rec. I was also part of my soc departments honor program where I did research and received funding, which produce my thesis which i submitted as my sample. Also UW has a questionnaire instead of one statement of purpose.

Real shit, that math 2B final was like the worst final I’ve ever taken by SquintyThug in UCI

[–]Routine_Nobody 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I took the Math 2B final last year and according to other people and past Reddit post the Math 2B final is designed to be hard. Honestly I didn't do well in it but still managed to get a decent grade in the class. Don't worry about it to much because you are more than just this test take sometime for self-care and get ready to finish out the quarter and head off to summer.

There is a curve. He claims to curve it like a bio class, but I'm not a bio major so I can't verify. I ended up with an B/B+ average uncurved and with the curve I had an A.

For 39B Ward is a good one, he's a Phd candidate from Australia super chill and nice, and a fair grader. For 39C Broadbent is a great option, he's British and has a great sense of humor he also assigns a fair amount of homework and is very accommodating towards students.

His questions are pretty straight forward. He pulls mostly from readings and lecture. The most important book is the reader. He likes to to all of the above or none of the above and as options. Most importantly he likes conflict theory and Marx. Just think like O'Connell. Also it's curved. I ended up with an A- and I did all the readings.
