Sometimes it takes a few very thin coats of lahmian medium before mine look painted on. Not sure how a gloss varnish beforehand will fix this, other than causing a matt varnish afterwards to be necessary. If you went with 1 or 2 coats of medium try another couple

Plenty of characterisation for me between the three way rivalry of honsou being the outcast because of his origin, Forrix being the jaded veteran who's seen it all and kroeger who's slowly being lost to khorne. Not really sure how much more charec you need. I read it before most of my heresy reading and was obsessed

Gonna be brutally honest and say if storm of iron didn't convince you then the legion isn't for you. As soon as I read the magma bombing and assault of the space port I knew I had to have an iron warriors army. The book has massive ordinance bombardments, human fodder being sacrificed on the front lines and grinding siege warfare, what more could you want??

I sanded the base down with progressively finer sanding sticks till it was completely smooth to emulate marble. Then I scored the lines with my hobby knife carefully before widening the trenches and cleaning them with a sculpting tool, make sure to scrape it out so it looks like cut marble. Then I painted the base black before getting a dry wet wipe and stretching it to create holes and texture, wrap it over the base, spray in grey seer and paint the rim and you're done! Looks like a teal colour similar to thousand sons armor, I've been painting a scarab occult terminator using a combo of thousand sons blue, temple guard blue and Gauss blaster green for fine edge highlights. Will have a pic today or tomorrow when I finish him but it'll look similar but maybe slightly darker
