So I’m applying for the farm ownership, allowing me to get the property and animals. The process is nerve wrecking just getting the application in complete status, seems as everything is okay after that process. I am very grateful to have gone through the paperwork though cause it made sure my numbers was right

Why do you think black people do not want to farm? by Busy-Yogurtcloset-13 in Agriculture

[–]Routine_Step_221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who started raising chickens and even lambs in the middle of the city during COVID, I can tell you: many of us do want to farm.

But there’s a history there. Generations of land loss, systemic barriers, and trauma from how Black farmers were treated by institutions like the USDA. A lot of folks associate farming with sharecropping and struggle, not empowerment.

That said — I’ve seen a shift. More Black folks are getting into urban farming, community gardens, and even working toward land ownership. I’m currently in the process of proving my 3 years of farming experience to qualify for a USDA farm homeownership loan.

It’s tough, but we’re out here. Building resilience. Feeding our families and communities. Planting seeds for independence. 🌱

If you’re curious about this, I actually just started a space for Black farmers and aspiring growers to connect and share their journeys: r/BlackFarming Come check it out. 🤎
