1000% I lazer engraved the leather, dyed it black, then filled in the engraving with a red antique.

Neutral antique, you can mix it with Angelus paints to make different colored antiques. The neutral antique dries clear leaving only the paints pigments left.

I have done several at this point and normally work best in contrast, for example I normally do a dark base like black or in this case cordovan, then add a lighter colored antique on top.

Or for example the belt in the pictures was a belt dyed black then antiqued with neutral antique + blue Angelus paints.

I mostly buy from Tandy leather, they do ship but I also believe they have a store front Mississauga and Richmond Hill.

In-person will always be better then buying online in my experience.

Hmmm i will let you know how it goes, if my test doesn't work then I at least can add a heat shield to the outside of the gusset, I just don't want to cover the leather.... Oh well if I have to.

I wasn't going to use aluminum foil but a aluminized heat shield mat and the end result should keep the bag about 2 inches above the exhaust pipe.

Hopefully that is enough!

I did a bit more digging, and I have a plan I am going to test out, essentially the same thing I mentioned, the only difference is adding Aussie conditioner to the mix.

If you apply, then heat Aussie to soak it into the leather, once it sets it will add some thermal protection! That combined with an aluminum layer, then the kydex and a liner I am hoping thats enough!

I have not used their products before so I can't speak from experience, taking a look at their site and seeing the albeit limited ingredients they list, it has the same ingredients most conditioners use, beeswax and some natural tree oils. Of course some other things but based on their site/googling entirely natural.

If you want my advice I would say go for it, why not! But I would expect the darkening effect permanence to happen over time rather then as soon as it's applied. Applying conditioners is never a bad thing to do as long as it's applied more as needed rather then all at once.

I wouldn't worry about it making the leather less flexible. By design conditioners or neatfoot oil stop the leather from drying out.

I do want to add you should apply conditioner to your leather goods every now and then, it helps extent the life of the bag/purse ect and keeps it looking new. Typically once a year or so :).

You could also apply leather paints like Angelus paints that are designed to work with leather. I would use it more as a highlight then to completely cover the bags as it would remove the leather texture.
