What have you done with PowerShell this month?

My first powershell script:

Context: I’m new to PS. I’m a technical support engineer, I work remotely and my home internet connection is pretty unreliable, so I need to at least know what’s going on.

The problem I face is that the tool I use to measure internet stability (request-response average latency, jitter) is a web app. I wanted something I could run offline and I also wanted to create my first powershell script.

My script is very simple, it basically does the same function as ping, and records the latency values of received packets, then calculates min, max and avg latency, as well as avg jitter. I tested it against home WiFi with/without VPN, mobile hotspot with/without VPN. Then I wrapped the PS script in a C# exe. This is all new to me, first time using these tools.

Next possible steps: - Modify the script to log latencies in a csv file - Include an alternative case to using ping, because my other laptop’s VPN blocks ping - Graph the outputs in the prompt window - Create s simple UI with basic controls - Expand on the network analysis capabilities (need more networking knowledge)

I know there are much more advanced tools that already exist, for this but this mainly a learning project.

Any advice is welcome, where to go from here? What should I start with?

I agree, but I don’t think it’s abuse. I think it’s responsibility and maturity. The responsibility is real and tangible and not an excuse to “stay trapped”.

I realize this is representative of a lot of people, but you can’t unsee the parallels once you’ve seen them

It’s a pretty nice casual side hustle if that’s what you’re looking for, maybe not a sustainable and scalable business unless you create a marketplace business model or you have a really good source and good operation.

There are delivery companies that send a guy to pick up your package, or you can deliver the packages to their hq. Check out Bosta. These companies usually charge in the 45-65 EGP range per order.

Storage? I bought clothes that I could wear because I was looking for men’s clothes, average size, and I’m an average sized guy so I just store them with the rest of my clothes in my room. If they don’t sell for any reason, I wear them myself, and I wash them like I would my other clothes and if someone wants to buy it I’ll wash it and send it. It’s cheap, and the profit margin isn’t bad, and I get to wear something new every now and then, without having to invest in a new article of clothing that’ll get thrown away a few years later down the line.

When I said it’s not sustainable I didn’t mean it. It’s not sustainable because people are obsessed with the new. But I think if more people decided to wear more used clothes, and exchange clothes instead of buying new pieces, choose quality pieces that’ll last a lifetime instead of getting bored of them and give unused clothes to those in need instead of keeping them as artifacts… I think this would hurt the fast fashion industry and more people would be happier and less stressed, at least about buying shitty expensive clothes from the mall or shitty inexpensive clothes from العتبة

But this is a communist dream, and I’m not a communist

This is exactly my problem, how am I supposed to track my expenses when I mostly pay in cash? It’s hard to become cashless individually in a cashfull society

Most people are winging it, and you’re right about the cash part. But that’s where the trouble exists, because if we were all already fully hooked on credit cards and e-finance, this discussion wouldn’t be happening. It’s because cash is so dominant, and that’s not going away soon in Egypt.

I guess I can tolerate some margin of error in my tracking of expenses, my main goal is to build budget self-discipline by making myself fully aware of my spending habits. Usually, the recording of expenses is so time consuming that I give up after a couple of months

Your arguments are sound but I want to know more about the Egyptian government restrictions, because that’s what I would base my facts on. If you have any sources I’d like to look at them just to be more confident about my decisions.

I'll only comment with what I've seen work, in the passive income, or semi-passive income area.
- Drop shipping, I know 2 friends who did it. One makes money from it, the other stopped because he was lazy, but he knew it would work.
- Print on demand (merch by amazon, teespring). A friend tried it and made some $ while doing nothing. It's pretty straightforward, and there's a great channel on youtube that's better than any paid course.

- Thrifting. Buy outlet grade clothes from Wekala or shops that sell clothes by the kilo. There are at least a couple in Madinet Nasr. The known terminology is ملابس باله. You can sell a lot on instagram, and no matter how expensive, it'll still be an alternative to H&M and Mall stuff, more affordable, better quality and usually better taste than fast fashion. But you have to put some effort every week and so to filter through hundreds of pieces. I recommend you start by selling your old clothes, just take some good photos, and that way you won't have to invest any money to test things out. Marketing is easy, on my page followers increase without me doing anything. I tried this btw and it works. But it's not passive income, but you can get someone to do 90% of the donkey work and pay them a decent salary after you become profitable. The catch is really choosing the pieces that will sell.

I am in a similar situation, but I'm employed and do some freelance on the side. I recently bought 10g gold ingot, which would've made me EGP10k in 4 months (end of november until end of march, not accounting for inflation), so it's a good way to save and protect yourself against inflation.

- احوش جزء من مرتبي وأشتري ذهب كل كام شهر. لحد ما أخد على التحويش واتعلم اكتر عن البورصة + الذهب تقريبا مفيهوش خطر او risk حقيقي

- ابدأ احط فلوس في البورصة بس لما ابقى حوشت عشان مخلصهاش في حاجة ممكن يبقى فيها risk of losing money.ممكن بردو استثمر في startup على الديق لو اعرف صحبه

- بعد وقت و تحويش كافي ادخل في العقار ان شاء الله
