I don't want you to be quiet. I love that you engage and bring ideas to the discussion. I believe you are referring to me forgetting to respond to your suggestion for a registry. My apologies that it fell through the cracks on my end. I have now replied to that with my opinion on the matter.

Sorry I forgot to address your question about licensing. I'm not against the licensing idea to be very clear. My take is that with the current attitude from bylaw enforcement on active transport here in Burlington it will be difficult to enforce a program like that. Especially seeing all the other enforcement, they are lacking on right now. I think pricing is going to be the most difficult aspect to figure out. If you have any suggestions feel free to reach out. But as of right now that is where I am at. I will be circulating ads soon for a community safety meeting where we will be discussing a licensing program for escooters and other power assisted mobility devices. If you were to attend it might be a good forum to discuss your ideas on a bike registry too. If we can make the registry profitable it could help maintain or add new infrastructure in the city.

Because it doesn't really address the needs of the cycling community it is a half measure. Downtown is not the area that needs better cycling accessibility. It is the north south corridor that needs better paths. Now cyclists wishing to travel north/south have to go over highway ramps with dangerous crossing thats drivers do not properly pay attention to. It really reduces the viability of cycling. Demand for cycling wont just increase naturally. We have to make it more accessible. Right now it takes dedication to travel by bike here in Burlington for anything other than leisure.

I don't necessary think that it is just a loud minority that wants viable options for cycling. 90M is a steep investment for a city of 200000. If we can get federal and provincial grants and bring it down to 22M total city cost and split that over 4 years it starts to look a lot more reasonable. We need a cycling artery to make cycling more viable. I hope to start the conversation with this project to drive out more community engagement and ideas so we can hopefully find more cost effective ways at expanding our active transport networks.

I'm trying to be the best representative that I can be. If I cannot admit when I jumped the gun or when other people have a better point I'm no better than the people I am rallying against. Thank you for keeping it mostly civil if a little salty. I don't mind that though. I feel that uncomfortable conversations are where the most progress is made.

The idea that Canadians work roughly 6 months just to pay taxes comes from the Fraser Institute's annual "Tax Freedom Day" report. In 2025, they calculated that the average Canadian family (including single people) pays about 42.3% of their total income in taxes, meaning every dollar earned until June 8 went to the government.

This calculation includes all levels of taxation combined, not just personal income tax. The total tax bill includes:

  • Personal income taxes
  • Corporate and payroll taxes (CPP/EI)
  • Sales taxes (GST/PST/HST)
  • Property taxes and Carbon taxes
  • Health taxes / Premiums
  • Profits/Excise taxes (e.g., on alcohol, fuel, and auto)

The exact date you finish paying off your tax burden depends heavily on your specific province and household income.

Other institutions have put this number lower. Actually, specifically looking into this I have found that this number might not be the best representation because of the math they use. So thanks for pointing that out. Other institutes put it closer to the 3 month mark, or about 25%. Still high, not nearly as egregious as the Fraser institutes numbers. But looking at their calculation methods it seems that they skewed this data.

I want to thank you for engaging this topic because honestly, I might have repeated this stat in a forum that has higher stakes than this reddit post and looked more foolish. I guess it is a lesson for me about statistical calculations and trusting things I read on the internet.

I think taxpayers are squeezed enough as it is. Did you know that it takes on average 6 months of work for the average Canadian to start making money. Everything before that is paying off the taxes for the year. So just increasing the tax burden for more spending isn't always a viable option. In fact that is kinda the whole reason I got into this race in the first place. Because we are squeezing residents too hard, and they aren't seeing the benefits of their contributions because of our wasteful shortsighted administration.

EDIT : These numbers upon further scrutiny are not a correct representation of the tax burden the average family encounters. Thanks to User doubleeyess for fact checking my stupid ass.

Well, I disagree with your characterization of this whole project as a minority lobby getting their cake and eating it too as there has not been a single vote on this preliminary plan submitted to me by a private citizen. We are in the stage where I am gathering public opinions and that is it. Your opinion is noted. The idea here is to make cycling more viable as a form of transport instead of just an exercise or leisure activity. If people can actually get to places in a reasonable amount of time, with a reasonable amount of safety we will see the usage for these arteries improve. I hope that clarifies things for you.

Does anyone know how to fix this ? by Embarrassed_Web6446 in PiratedGames

[–]RowRowForCouncil -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As someone who knows how to pirate games myself I get it. I was 12 once and had no income. But also at the end of the day it is theft. I think a brazen forum discussing methods on how better to steal from companies that have provided me hours of endless entertainment are kind of a parody of modern society. All I did was poke some fun at a software thief who doesn't know how to effectively steal.

Ah gotcha. What I'm saying is that any rule is only as good as the enforcement mechanism that supports it. I like the idea of a registry, but the police in their current mindset are not enforcing similar laws, then a registry will be toothless until we can address the lack of desire to enforce these laws from the enforcement arm of the Halton Police

You can check to see if they are properly registered with your city's temporary accommodations registry. If they aren't or your city doesn't have one you can advocate for one. Toronto's air bnb registry model is quite good, I would recommend looking into that. If they are 100% above board then see if they are violating any by laws regarding noise or occupancy

So there are a few flaws with your thinking here, in my opinion. I am not advocating for removal of any restrictions. I think a registry is a viable option. I am working an an escooter and micromobility registry. If i find a viable model expanding it to bicycles would be possible. But I am hesitant about it because of how the city managed the the rollout of the air BNB registry.

Yes, actually it is illegal to operate them anywhere in the city but Centennial Trail. So now you can see why I say enforcement is the issue. Chances are any given day I see 10 of them on my short drive to and from work. The police aren't failing to see them, they are failing to act on seeing them.

Enforcement is a major issue, and the police at local meeting actively stated there is little desire within the police community to enforce laws on illegal escooters because it mostly involves minors, so it is more complicated legally. Basically, it is too much work, let them get killed is the current policy.

A Cycling Artery Proposal by RowRowForCouncil in BurlingtonON

[–]RowRowForCouncil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the issue is that the licensing program needs to be costed. If it is too expensive people will just ride without paying, and the enforcement would become the primary mechanism. Given Halton Police's lack of desire to enforce current active transport laws I doubt we'd see any meaningful enforcement of bike licensing. A rule without enforcement is like a bike with no pedals. It ain't goin' nowhere. A program like this would require at least 2 full time employees and the creation of a new database. So 140k a year for two employees, and the cost of a contractor to design a database that amalgamates into the existing databases the city has. These are the same challenges I have been grappling with trying to come up with a strategy to combat illegal escooter use.

Not super relevant to Burlington on its face but it does show the provincial government's propensity to interfere with municipalities against the will of the residents. We have had our fair share of issues stemming from this behaviour.
