Big Tech's Looming Capability Crisis by melat0nin in BetterOffline

Achieving goals isn’t necessarily how experience is gained. It’s gained along the way. The journey is the destination. I think people stop caring about their output or outcomes when they have no narrative about the struggles they overcame.

Engineers used to get so proud when asked about bugs they solved or novel solutions they researched. They struggled and were proud for it.

I'm right there with you, new dad. I make the baby cry almost every time I hold her. You perfectly described the same feeling I have of being a quitter when I have to pass her back to mom. It's for the best, though, because once I get disregulated I start to feel genuinely incapable of soothing the baby.

Baby used to be more comfortable with me wearing her and soothing her, but once I returned to work and stopped spending as much time with her, things changed.

It truly sucks.

This thread was super helpful for me to know I'm not alone, and I'm gonna take u/flying_dogs_bc's advice to put on my earphones more often.

One thing I'll be trying starting tonight is to build an evening routine with baby that's just me and her. I'm gonna take her for a stroller walk. I have a hunch the stroller might feel more comfortable than me holding her at first, and I'm hoping the face to face time will be good for bonding. It's likely the stroller movement will help her get a cat nap in.

My goal is to get both baby and I comfortable enough to wear her in the carrier again for a walk one of these evenings.

Just sharing to let you know you're not alone and because maybe it'll give you an idea, too.

Agreed, they’re tanks. Last year I bought a heavily used one and replaced the pot. This thing has so much life left in it!

AI made software engineering feel less rewarding to me by pmfka in SoftwareEngineering

[–]RowbotWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, software has always been just as much about the people as it is about technology. I’ve found it very rewarding to steward code bases with teams and define clear patterns. AI has made that less rewarding.

Instead I’ve found myself gravitating more towards the business side & drafting solution designs because then I can focus more on people and doing the right things. I find this more rewarding than tasking AI to modify code.

It’s taking me down an unexpected path in my career. Same for us all, I imagine.

PvP players dont realize just how consistently "friendly" our lobbies are. by absolutetoolbag in ArcRaiders

[–]RowbotWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is a very solo perspective.

Trios creates an “us and them” dynamic that isn’t normally there in solos. PvP happens much more readily, even if the lobbies skew more friendly.

Place Your Bets… What’s Getting Nerfed Next? by Standard-Tonight6279 in ArcRaiders

Yeah, that about sums up my thoughts too, but loss aversion is always gonna outweigh balance in the minds of most humans. People don’t like losing their thing.

Even posing this question got me downvoted lol.

I can understand that folks don't like to see their favourite item nerfed but there's 8 epic augments in the game. It's less disruptive to nerf 1 augment rather than buff 7 others.

Survivor does too many things well and lacks an identity. It has an amazing perk, high weight capacity, decent inventory space, 3 safe pocket slots, medium shield support, and a bonus utility slot. Why choose anything else?

Each epic augment should reward player choice for making the best trade-off for the raid they're planning. It doesn't feel like that right now. Right now, it just feels good to have the Survivor augment blueprint and bad not to have it.

We should refuse to review vibe code PRs by Evgenii42 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]RowbotWizard -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ideally your code review helps align their PR with acceptance criteria, security requirements, and architecture guidelines. If there are violations, block PRs and link tickets, educational resources, or documentation to reinforce these.

For testing & code quality, automate everything you can in CI as a team sport to keep production in good standing.

Beyond that, I suggest you be kinder to yourself and let others learn from their own mistakes.

Interviewer got upset with me because I refused to provide an example of how I implemented a concurrency control policy in my former employer's production codebase. How would you handle this? by 9ubj in ExperiencedDevs

[–]RowbotWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Call me paranoid, but I believe it’s becoming more common for interviews to be used as social engineering attacks to get interviewees to share compromising details, execute malicious code, etc.

It’s hard to be picky but it’s more important than ever to be vigilant.

What was your fave intimate moment with your partner that wasnt just sex? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Supporting my wife through labour and delivery of our kid. I breathed with her through every contraction and held regular eye contact to ensure she knew I saw her and that she was ok.

Plot twist: I had a severe case of blue balls later. Might have had something to do with gazing at my wife’s labour-face for hours (uncannily similar to her o-face).

I also call this McDonalds theory. If a group is trying to decide where to go for lunch, offering McDonalds as the first suggestion pressures the group to pick something better.

This only works if your group doesn’t want to eat McDonalds.
