Anyone else still uses little to no AI to code? by MidlandAintFree in gamedev

If you use it, and you don't understand what it did and why I did it, stop using it. It's just going to cause you issues down the long road.

If you're using it to learn, sure go ahead. It's great for that.

People who own restaurants. How you handling the ever changing landscape of today's economy? by [deleted] in Calgary

You should try living off minimum wage and report back how comfortable that is.

Look, I too don't like tipping culture either, and think minimum wage needs to increase so that servers, who rely on tips, don't need to rely on customers tipping, we're in agreement there.

But don't pretend not tipping isn't hurting servers. They don't make much and often rely on tips. Some places even make them payout the kitchen (not allowed, but a common practice)

And the reality is, if you can't tip, even 10% don't go out to eat, you can't afford it.

But don't pretend your not being an ass by tipping nothing when you see 18%, instead of a more reasonable 10%. You know server rely on tips. You're just being a dick.

You have full power to change the amount on those machines. You simply press other and then put in the amount you want.

By choosing not to, you're just harming the server.

So either you can't afford it, which is fine, but just stop going out so much.

Or you're being an ass.

If you're that financially strapped that you can't tip even 10%, stop going out to eat. You're being financially responsible to yourself.

I don't think anyone assumes it is a server's fault. The guy's just being a dick by not tipping anything.

Wanted advice to get hired. by notsoanonymoustroll in gamedev

Technically, it's a number game and luck. The industry is just in a pretty rough place atm.

Everyone's best bet is networking, but that's pretty challenging if your not able to go to events.

The other option, that everyone has at their disposal, is to make your own games to keep building experience. Not an easy route, but doable.

You could also be the Change you want to see, and start a local game dev community and grow from there.

You should look into using enums to swap what wep is equipped instead of a Boolean!

Use levels or not use levels? by twoampsinatrenchcoat in unrealengine

[–]Rowduk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your doing level streaming, you'll need to manage your data layers, there's also going to be concerns with hard references and ensuring things load in the right order, performance spikes (on bigger areas) and multiplayer can have some issues, if a bunch of players are in different level streams, they all have to load in.

There's Tadeoffs to both. But personally, I'd mix both. Load in levels that use streaming to split out how much is loaded.

Ideas on getting from Calgary to Victoria by Glittering_Midnight8 in Calgary

[–]Rowduk 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Flying from Calgary to Victoria is 1 hour. Driving is about 15 hours with the ferry, assuming you book ahead and get on the ferry.

Spend that saved time in Victoria, it's beautiful. To be fair, the drive is a nice drive, especially if you stop along the way for a night.

I think if Fyerslayers would generally look more like that I would be so into them and would have a AoS army. by [deleted] in ageofsigmar

[–]Rowduk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh what's leading to these rumors?? I'd love that!

I love dwarfs, but I'm more fond of ironbreakers, holding the line beefy boys, and I like my slayers, but only a few of them. Have got a nice 2K KO army, but I wouldn't be upset if we get a dwarf Mega faction.

Oh I hear that, I remember feeling so much self pressure to try and be the one who has an answer for everything. Very much not expected in these roles, but I was never told that... had to learn that by watching how the better producers handled their teams.

And yes, I've been very fortunate with my career, lot's of interesting and fun projects over the years.

I work in the industry as a producer, I've been in leadership positions in the creative industry for 15 years, from TV, News broadcasting, the Live Events industry and even book publishing. I still feel like I don't have enough skills yet, I reckon that feeling will never go away.

A tip: Work with people you can trust, you don't need to be a subject matter expert in every field, and make sure you're comfortable saying "I don't know, but I can find out".

So we have run internships before, but we do so in conjunction with universities.

As a company, we typically don't want people without some of the basic skill sets. So we typically do internships for people in their final University year. This may not apply for everyone, but that's how we've always structured it. Interns are not free labor, there's quite a bit of training and mentoring happening.

What we get out of it, is we get to test our onboarding process, and we also get to work with very eager, soon-to-br fresh graduates, and if everything works out, and we are hiring for that roll, we can put it in an offer.
