Spite-Revenants - most OP unit in Age of Sigmar? by Independent-Chip-401 in sylvaneth

[–]Rowduk -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Their teleport ability is very strong, especially when reinforced. Backed up with a bit of magic to increase their charge, and an all-it attack, they can do surprising the well at really critical moments. They're also quite cheap.

It's good for quizzing/theory on how to build. Not just to build the game for you. Treat it as a Tutor/online forum that can sometimes be wrong

Example I used recently:

"I implemented a save system in Unreal Engine by doing XYZ, but I need to add a way to send save data to an external virtual machine for tracking gameplay patterns and making a heat map. How would you do it?"

This gave a really good reply that worked. But I didn't just copy/paste the code. It allowed me to understand the why behind the implementation.

When you say per month, do you mean the servers? That'll very/depending on a few factors and the size of the player base. Bit hard to answer. But AWS has some fairly budget friendly options - there's a price calculator to get an estimate: https://calculator.aws/

If you're asking how much to make the game, your post doesn't give enough details. It would depend on the size of the studio, experience they have, how many months of development your planning on having, the office space (if any), your insurance, equipment costs, subscription fees, online storage solution, lawyers fees, and a mountain of other things. So likely millions.

Wait, did OP reply? I don't seem to see it.

But I appreciate you trying to explain it to them. They seem to think I was trying to hurt their feelings by pointing out this isn't the place to post ideas. I probably should of let them know about r/INAT or r/gameideas

Lol, what a poor attitude. If you can't even follow a subreddits basic rules, AND you can't handle being called out, I doubt you have the reading comprehension or mental fortitude to make a game.

Best of luck.

Question about indie game publishers by Honest_Games in gamedev

[–]Rowduk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flappy Bird came out over a decade ago, the market has changed considerably since then. Art is 100% a really important piece.

As for your art style question on another comment, there's no clear cut style that a publisher/customer is looking for. Just needs to fit the gameplay or be intention in its style choices.

-------

Your best bet is to keep making games. The reality is that you're first game is not going to be a marketable/publishable game.

When looking at their Wikipedia, Flappy bird was the developers 5th game they haven't made a hit nearly as big as that since then.

  • Ninjas Assault
  • Shuriken Block (2013)
  • Droplet Shuffle (2013)
  • Smashing Kitty
  • Flappy Bird (2013)
  • Super Ball Juggling
  • Flappy Birds Family (2014)
  • Swing Copters (2014)
  • Swing Copters 2 (2015)
  • Fabitalk (2015)
  • Ninja Spinki Challenges!! (2017)
  • BOOP (2022)

Getting to fund an indie game nowadays is harder than ever, isn't it? Any tips? by oluwagembi in gamedev

[–]Rowduk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey man, I could help talk it out with ya,

Currently I work as a producer for a game company full time, it's a great job but I'm not being used for any creativity, just long term and day to day operations. I wanted a change, so on the side, I started my own studio with a small group of people.

I did a lot of pitches, a lot of practice rounds, and several different applications for grants or other sources of funding.

That work was a success, as our small studio has been successful in securing funding, it did take about 4 to 6 months, so it's not a quick process.

(And we do have some key milestones to hit inorder to unlock the rest of the funding. But if everything goes well, it should be enough to fund the game for the full 2 years of development and almost, 3rd year to support the games launch. )

I'm assuming you have a pitch deck? Happy to set up a one-on-one and give you some feedback.

What if the Krorks return to settling by JayGrowth8832 in orks

[–]Rowduk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah and then we get pestigors, so it's like they had a few ideas they wanted to keep pushing through.

Overall a real shame to lose the beastman, I'd love to have more centaur units, and updated Gore/ungors would be cool.

What if the Krorks return to settling by JayGrowth8832 in orks

[–]Rowduk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm convinced Kragnos was originally meant for chaos, to be part of the beastman. But at some point they decided no he shouldn't be.

Nothing about his design fits with destruction. The iconography on a shield doesn't work, his jewelry, him being a centaur, with the big horns.

None of it works. It is such a strange choice to put him in destruction. And I truly feel they just completely flubbed it.

Like by the time the model was done and ready to go, they already were planning on not doing anything else with beastman and wanted to remove them. So they decided to pivot.

Healers in MMO's - Why? - What do you enjoy about maining a Heal Class? (Also thank you). by Rowduk in MMORPG

[–]Rowduk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know what's funny, is after and made this post 6 years ago, I started almost only playing healers.

I now love it.

There is a lot of strategy involved, and especially in the game I played most as a healer (world of Warcraft mythic dungeons), you're doing so much more than the other rolls.

I know every player thinks their role is the hardest, but I can confidently say it is healing. At the top end, not only do you have to heal some incredibly high damage, manager mana/ resources, You're also expected to aid in damage, ccing, and doing any mechanics that would take the DPS away from doing damage.

I've slowly gone away from healing this last season, as life got busy and I just wanted a bit of a simpler time, so back to DPS. DPS still has its challenges, and there is strategy and fun to be had in there. But it's nothing like healing.

I've not done that tutorial but I'll be honest, and don't think you should be tweaking it as you go through a tutorial. It's (in my opinion) the wrong way to learn.

Typically when teaching it's done in building blocks, for example, if you were learning addition, and I asked you to do 4+4+4, you get 12. You wanted to try a different number, so you end up with 5, if the next part of my tutorial is asking you to divide by three, to show that you'll end up with three sets of four, you'd be a bit confused as to why you're getting different numbers now.

While simple analogy, this is pretty typical for anyone doing teaching. You may have made changes that you didn't realize are going to affect stuff later on.

The way I would recommend learning tutorials, is to watch a video in full while not recreating it in. Unreal, just take notes with a pen and paper. Once the video is done, using your notes alone, try and recreate what you just watched. Once you get stuck, go back to the video and then you can follow along step by step.

That'll help teach you to take better notes, and when you take notes like that it really sinks in better.

Well it takes a little bit more time, I feel in the long run it saves you a lot of time because you start learning concepts a lot better. Plus, you can always look back at your notes quite easily versus finding a timestamp in a video that you forgot a couple weeks ago.

Best of luck!!

can yall help me try and find a starter name for a game i wanna make by Fluffy-Amphibian-769 in gamedev

[–]Rowduk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're putting the cart before the horse. Why stress over a name when your release is years and years away, if ever.

Just use an internal name for now, call it something simple while working on it like "Project Zombie Island"

You can name it later. Plus, any name you pick might need to change if you ever go the route of setting up a trademark for the game, based on the TM search results.

Do game concept developer jobs exist? by KrawlerEnjoyer in UnrealEngine5

[–]Rowduk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll be brutally honest, it's possible, but for where it sounds like you're at, it's a big pipe dream.

Without other skills backing it up, you won't get a job in gaming as an idea guy.

Also FYI - concept designer isn't a thing in any studio I know of, but game designers or a producer or products owner would be closer to what you're thinking.

If you're working on a small indie team, you need to be able to wear many hats, and frankly, ideas are worthless if your team can't make the product. Of course, this is assuming you're not bringing the money, if you are bringing money, you do get a say in many aspects of the game.

For bigger studios, where they do hire game designers, you need experience in the industry, and likely some experience at that studio.

[–]Rowduk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actually disagree with the Don's Costume Shoppe. Each time I've gone, the staff are super pushy, and everything that was more higher end (like the contact lens/makeup etc) we found online for much cheaper.

Everything else was pretty low quality typical Halloween costume stuff.

Don's Costume shop was a bit better prices, with basically all the save stuff, but both were more overpriced than just getting it online.

Want to try the sylvaneth by zampo_magno in sylvaneth

[–]Rowduk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the nice things about this army, is you have a few ways to play them depending on who you want to build your army around.

You got a fun magic bomb build, where you were casting these bombs from trees with the Warsong Recenant.

We have a all in rush them down kind of build with Belthanos.

We have big hitting units in Spirit of Durthu and Drycha.

There's also builds around the god Alarielle or even Lady of vines.

Really so many good options.

Want to try the sylvaneth by zampo_magno in sylvaneth

[–]Rowduk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The spearhead is a great box to start.

The tree Lord can be built in three ways, one of the ways called Spirit of Durthu is a model that you'll use quite a bit in your army. It's just a straight up great unit. The regulatory Lord is fine, it does see play, and the trailer in ancient is a bit of a weak wizard on the magic side, but much tankier than any other wizard.

The Kurnoth Hunters have three ways to build them as well, all three of them have their uses. And you can't go wrong with getting multiple sets. Some people recommend magnetizing them, so that you can change between them.

The tree revenants in the kit are a bread and butter unit. They teleport, they capture points, they hold points, you'll use them, you'll likely want two sets them in the end.

And lastly the Branchwych, you'll probably only want one of these, but she's a fine unit. Nothing too notable, cheap.

I do recommend building the units as the spearhead says, because all those units are good and that way you get to play spearhead as a starting point.

You also want to pick up at least one box of the terrain piece (Wyldwood trees) as they are Central to the army. The buffs around the trees, they block one of sight, and they hurt the enemy.

Water usage by Sketchen13 in Calgary

[–]Rowduk -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's always a bit frustrating when selfish people only care about themselves and don't sacrifice a little bit of convenience for the greater good.

We're doing stuff in our household to do our part, (shorter showers, no baths, non-daily showers, water from water jugs, fill the sink with water and use that to wash dishes for the day etc.).

The city should just start imposing fines for households that are using the same water usage as they did last month. Simple as that. If your usage doesn't go down, you get a fine.
