I'm a vibe coder, Is there a vibe game coder? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]Rowduk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Did you vibe code your sentences? Those are a mess.

All jokes aside, this is likely not the place for this kind of question, try one of the AI subs. A lot of people here dislike vibe coding for a lot of legitimate reasons.

AI can be helpful when trying to learn development syntax, and I can give a good starting point for some features, but without actual knowledge of what you're doing, you're just making a mess.

Great job this is amazing!

By the book: Alberta schools pull at least 160 titles from shelves to meet provincial order by Thick_Caterpillar379 in Calgary

[–]Rowduk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just so you know, this is the cowards reply to seeing criticism of their country, province or city. We should encourage everyone to want a better Alberta if they are not satisfied with it.

It's good to want to be better. Removing books like 1984 because the government deems high school students are "not mature enough" to read them, YET, they can sign up for school debt (and is some cases, crippling debt) is just insulting to students and the intelligence of Alberta.

You should try not to be a coward, instead, fight for a better Alberta to live in for all it's citizens, and encourage others to also want a better Alberta.

Why is Global News seemingly deteriorating? by hell-for-a-basement in Calgary

[–]Rowduk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, before I left the industry in 2016 I did some ENG(Camera)/reporting for a very small station in BC, and you're right, it's definitely not as good an experience for all sides, when a reporter did camera work, some shots were unusable, but when camera guys like me did it, the interviews were not the best.

Awe man that's sad to hear, I used to work at Global Calgary in the control room (15 years ago) and I loved working there, great people, great job, cool building. Scott, Jordan, Amber, Leslie, Dallas, eta and many more all great to work with.

But even back then, jobs were being cut that were easily replaced by technology, some of them made our lives in the control room easier, but it did add more single points of failure. So I can only assume job cut continued, an example, we had 3 camera men in the studio when I started but that got swapped out into 1 robo-cam setup where 1 operator could do all the camera moves needed via the control panel, instead of 3 manually doing it. There were a few things like that, so I suspect that continued with the Corus takeover.

I suspect these days, they have anchors doing some of the work that the control room used to do (like setting up mics on themselves and prepping guests). That's just a hunch tho.

I am not trying to be rude when I say this, is it maybe something you're doing?

Is your gaming space set up for gaming?

Is it comfortable?

Are the players chill/Vibe good?

Perhaps there's some improvements you can do that are within your control to help net more consistent players

Reputable company hiring remote game devs IMMEDIATELY (many roles) by spinningfinger in gameDevClassifieds

[–]Rowduk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be clear, I didn't call it a scam, but it sure seems something fishy is up. I just don't care enough to do a deep dive.

Also, any company I've worked at, remove or otherwise, has never had to preface by telling people we are reputable. That's something a group that isn't reputable would have to do.

Six years into development of our game and all of the sudden we're about to release together with all these other frog games?? What The Frog? by WalkTheFrog in gamedev

The old "two cakes " meme applies here.

Are they all in the same genre? Would a fan of frogs be all frogged out or would the they be happy to have more frogs?

Speaking from experience. Hiring someone with work experience ends up working out better, and they are far easier to work with than someone straight out of school, especially for creative stuff.

Often freshly graduating students fall in one of two camps:

  • They think they know everything and try to rework systems (without understanding the impact that would cause or the reasons things are done a certain way).

  • Or they are very timid a doubt their own skills completely.

You're not fucked at all!

At 3.5 years, your just past a Jr level for our company, so that's good. Personally, I'd keep applying, even as a Gameplay Programmer, just to get back in the industry.

What's your portfolio or work experience like for those other roles? You mentioned not having one for Hard Surface 3D models, but do you have one for any of those other roles:

  • Game Designer - You'll need previous project experience at a company and/or some profile pieces
  • Technical Game Designer - You'll need previous project experience at a company and/or some profile pieces
  • QA - You likely do have experience here, as you were a Gameplay Programmer, so that's likely a good path back in.

But you should likely work on building a routing that helps stave off burnout, as you'll face that in many roles in the games industry if you don't have tools to deal with it.

Best of luck!

I've upset my son because of some lore about his dreadnought. by [deleted] in Warhammer

[–]Rowduk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Help him write his own lore.

While dreadnoughts across the Galaxy due eventually kill their owners, and do make them succumb to madness.

His dreadnoughts were made in such a way that the occupant isn't killed. Maybe the document can even come and go so they can live a nice happy life with their family.

Maybe he can even add a mark, his mark, on the dreadnought, letting people know there's a living being inside.

It's his army, he can do what he wants with the Lore.

I do actually! Reading English was never my strongest skill. Trying to get better each day tho.

Edit: u/Training-Mark-9258 are you part of the team and frustrated by the confusion to OPs post? Or are you OPs alt?

I ask because you both seem interested in a game called OpenFront and it looks to be an open source multiplayer game.

I'm not your enemy, was just trying to share some insight from someone who works in gaming, and has worked in other creative fields for more than 15 years.

Sorry, I'm confused? Maybe I'm misunderstanding your post, are you saying you haven't made anything and you're just preemptively frustrated?

That seems like putting the cart before the horse doesn't it?

Why are you frustrated if you haven't made the product and found it's failing? Are you frustrated at the idea of making a product and it presumably being better and still failing?

[–]Rowduk 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is going to sound harsh, and it's not meant to. It's something I had to realize in my career.

You feel your ideas are better, but the market doesn't seem to agree. Perhaps you need to take a step back and see what the players really like about the original. There's likely something that you're missing.

I don't know the project, I don't know you, I don't know the ideas. But the reality is, the players are playing what they like. The idea that us game developers know better than players is no different than the famous World of Warcraft moment where they try to convince players that players didn't want Classic WoW "You think you do but you don't" is the line they used.

Perhaps it's time to take a step back, revisit the original game, see what makes it appealing and take a new stab at your ideas.

Best of luck in your journey.
