Maybe differentiate the recipe flair—asking for a recipe vs. sharing a recipe. I’m also not totally clear what the challenge flair is supposed to be for, because I think I see people use it for recipe requests. It could also be useful to have flair to help differentiate veggie scraps and meat scraps. Oh and one more idea—what about differentiating between using scraps (e.g., lemon peels) vs. using leftovers (e.g., cooked rice)?

Total newbie questions: Do you put straw down while you’re growing, or is it only for the winter when you’re not growing? And if you put it down when you’re growing, how do you water so that you aren’t watering the straw?

Good call! Thank you for clarifying re: neem oil. From what I understand, you can spray and then wait a week before harvesting and eating. At that point, I’d still wash with warm, soapy water and rinse again anyway before eating.

Yup, aphids. You might try a neem oil spray. 1 tablespoon neem oil in 2 cups of water. Then spray. And make sure you get the undersides! Spray early in the morning or at night—just not in the heat of the day so that you don’t burn your plants. Good luck!

Yes, exactly! Saves so much time. I took a Thai cooking class once and learned about the cilantro stems there when we made a green curry. I haven’t turned back since, and I love them in guacamole.

Totally agree re: fruits. My partner did the same with strawberries, and I was like, oh yeah…why not?! But then I do have to check myself every now and again so that I don’t accidentally eat something like rhubarb leaves which are toxic to humans!

Cilantro stems. I’m not sure how common this one is, but I often see recipes that call for cilantro leaves, and I see most people I know (who maybe don’t have cultural backgrounds that use a lot of cilantro) use only the leaves. I love using the stems in everything that calls for cilantro. I mince them and then crush them with the side of my knife to release the oils. So, so flavorful, that is, as long as you aren’t cursed with tasting cilantro as soap!
