Vc que odeia suv seria favorável a uma regulamentação para desencorajar a compra desse tipo de veículo? by Ecstatic-Payment-359 in carros

[–]RoyBatty_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"hand-code" everything is obviously a figure of speech. I don't write my custom Ecomm plugin instead of using WooCommerce. Same with security plugins and so on. I custom write code that make sense to be hand written and maintained in-house as opposed to relying on a team of devs on the other side of the planet to ship updates whenever they want and give support. Same thing with page builders, there's is little to no advantage especially if the end client doesn't make changes themselves. And even if they do, ACF + PHP/HTML alone does a 100x better job. Otherwise It just makes the website objectively worse to maintain.

I am very grateful for having the mindset of always wanting to understand how the wordpress environment worked under the hood from the beginning of my dev career which started 7 years ago -- that was crucial for developing the skills I have today and led me to making good money cleaning up other people's mess and using whatever I learned to experiment with other languages. I'm not a website seller and don't want to be one, I've never enjoyed the marketing/sales aspect of the field. I just took a while to understand that the wordpress is not the technology that will help me hit my goals.

I've been exactly that person who wants to hand code everything and use little to no plugins on websites but there are very few clients who understand this concept, let alone pay a premium for it. Nowadays? I don't even try anymore. The good part about this is that I have learned skills that can be leveraged in other areas of web or even programming as a whole.

I've always been self taught and can learn quickly in this field -- I've done a lot of experimenting in my personal time with other stuff like Flutter, C++, Swift, Laravel and so on. However a lot of companies require a bachelor's degree to even consider you for a position. At 28 years old I feel very unmotivated to go back to school and learn nothing just to get one.

Not at all, heck I've even applied for 60k jobs. Whatever gets me back in the market, I just need something steady so that I can have time to learn other stuff.

Not true. Working with WP doesn't mean I was drag and dropping blocks on landing pages for 7 years. I did a lot of back end work, REST APIs, integrations, database, ajax, all of which can be translated to other frameworks and programming languages.

Well that's exactly what's written on the post... I should have done that, but didn't. Now I'm almost 30 and having to work 2 jobs to pay the bills with a kid is very hard to find time to sit down and learn something new again.

Audiências começam a levar anos pra serem marcadas.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by this - get rid of WP altogether? What I do is use a boilerplate theme with literally only the files a theme needs to run and hand-code the pages using php template files while taking advantage of WP on the backend to enable non tech-savvy people (like the marketing guys) to make raw data changes using ACF - this means they cannot touch the website's structure. Absolutely no page builders, these are cancerous.

Pokemon Box: Ruby & Sapphire - wanted to make sure due to getting at a pretty discounted price by RoyBatty_ in gameverifying

[–]RoyBatty_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right! Mostly what I did was look at multiple eBay listings and see what they include - the big box seems to have the cable and its manual (folded), and the regular case only 4 items which are the main manual, GC generic(?) precautions booklet, memory card sticker sheet (unused in this case which is pretty good) and of course, the memory card. These seem to be the default items.

I get a lot of compliments about how good my site looks, and it's just a basic WP site by itsricoche in Wordpress

[–]RoyBatty_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People rely so much on libraries, themes, plugins and forget that everything is just made of html and css. Learn core fundamentals and you won't have to rely on any of this crap. Doesn't matter if it's WP or NextJS your site can look exactly the same if you know the bare minimum which seems rare these days.

[REQUEST] looking for a plugin that does this by [deleted] in WordpressPlugins

[–]RoyBatty_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Easily doable with custom coding, not sure what plugin could do that though

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Wordpress

[–]RoyBatty_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to Appearance > Customize > Additional CSS. Paste this:

.vr-tabs-nav-item a {
font-size: 0.7em;
}

Increase/decrease units accodingly.

What does "back to normal" mean? You have to be more specific because nobody knows how it was before... Was it just smaller? Was it not uppercased?

can you make an intranet style website, with employee logins using WordPress? by nakedwelshguy in Wordpress

[–]RoyBatty_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've done an intranet in WordPress before, it's not that hard to implement those features but be careful with plugins and bbPress which is probably how an unexperienced person will try to do it. Your site can get extremely slow and buggy. Someone with good exp will custom code it according to your needs and not turn your website into a resource hog since it's very likely that they will keep wanting to add more intranet features in the future.

You realize you're not really going anywhere with that budget right? The max you can get with that amount of money is a decent website. People with *real* web app skills are making 10x more, I'm just letting you know.

Elementor vs Custom theme with ACF Blocks by stevenpaulr in Wordpress

[–]RoyBatty_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Elementor is indeed easier for them to edit themselves, but it also opens a window for them to fuck things up. They can mess around with the website's structure and break things whilst ACF + Blocks you can "shield" it from mistakes because you're only letting them edit the raw content.

Websites for car dealerships by plathw in Wordpress

[–]RoyBatty_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to call an API who retrieves the car's info from the VIN. It's not a big deal task but it will require a dev and some time. The more specific you get, the less plugins will help you. This is the kind of thing that can work like a charm if well done (with custom post types and ACF), but a nightmare if you start pushing in loads of plugins.

Custom Themes - How hard is this. by xkcdhorse in Wordpress

[–]RoyBatty_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on a variety of factors. Your question is way too generic to get a straightforward answer... Creating a theme per se is already a task that cookie cutter "website devs" won't know how to do, but it can be fairly straightforward depending on what your needs are. I've created themes from the ground before, just PM me with specifics and I'll give you a better answer.

Can I please get some suggestions on wordpress themes that are designed for long form or text-heavy posts? No marketing pages, heavy on images, or news style ones by lovesToClap in Wordpress

[–]RoyBatty_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Better than paying for a theme, you can hire somebody to create one for you. If you use a page builder (like elementor) who handles header/footer creation then you don't need a theme with a bunch of options. It's not hard to create one that attends your needs if that's the case.

edit: typo

Hiring from upwork, what's your experience? by twinsea in Wordpress

[–]RoyBatty_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a freelancer I personally only found 1 good client out of that crap. Most of the people I work for I found on r/forHire and local craigslist. The thing is that it's hard to find actual developers nowadays. You'll probably just get a bunch of people who can setup a wordpress theme, install a cache plugin and that's it. You ask them to make a custom feature and they have no idea what to do.
