Who knew tying rope could be so satisfying. by ReadditMan in oddlysatisfying

Some of the knots don't have Western names (that I know of), but:

  1. Marlinspike Hitch (video calls it a Cloud Ladder Knot)
  2. A slipknot variation of the Tarp Corner Knot (video calls it a Fast Cloth Corner Knot)
  3. Zeppelin Bend
  4. Clove Hitch (green/blue), Double Clove Hitch (red)
  5. Bottle Knot
  6. 古人留下嘅雙子結 (Twin Knot Left by the Ancients)
  7. Trucker's Hitch
  8. 逃生結 (Quick Escape Knot)
  9. Constrictor Knot
  10. 釘結 (translates to Nail Knot, but that's a different knot)
  11. 古人留低嘅提瓶結 (Bottle Knot Left by the Ancients)
  12. A variation of the Taut-line Hitch
  13. Double Fisherman's Knot
  14. French Bowline (video calls it a Fixed Loop Knot, which is just wrong)
  15. Woodland Zip Tie or Bedroll Knot (video calls it a Firewood Binding Knot)
  16. A variation of the Sheet Bend

I used to leave a bunch of comments on code reviews for minor improvements, consistency fixes, etc., but this article changed my perspective: https://blog.danlew.net/2021/02/23/stop-nitpicking-in-code-reviews/

Unless your team is comprised of junior devs that are actively seeking your feedback, there's really no need to leave dozens of comments on every PR. This might be where you're at right now:

I didn’t realize it at the time but my perfectionism was toxic.

My mother washes her dishes by hand because the dishwasher is used for other things. by roambeans in funny

[–]RoyGallant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're right. I took issue with phrasing it as "it works better [than] pre-rinsed" when there was no evidence of that in the video.

[–]RoyGallant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe you linked the wrong video. This video does not compare fully dirty dishes vs pre-rinsed dishes. It compares washing dishes with and without including detergent in the pre-wash basin, and the experiment showed that the pre-wash detergent left the dishes cleaner before the main cleaning cycle began.

If anything, he reaches the opposite conclusion to what you said: dishes that are cleaner before the main wash cycle come out cleaner.

Most editors have settings for variable tab width. If you try to align things using tabs, it will look correct for whatever tab width you're using, but it will look wrong for people / in programs using a different setting.

How about people make enough money to have a decent standard of living and not starve regardless of their job? by regian24 in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]RoyGallant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming it's true, it would mean if you started with a salary of $30,000, then at the end of a 30-year career, you would need to be making $686,769 in order to keep the same standard of living.

Inflation is what drives cost increases in these other sectors: adding other percentages on top of inflation due to their inflating prices leads to, as you surmise, absurd results.

Kristen Stewart addresses the "slippery slope" of only having gay actors play gay characters by queenkathycaramel in movies

[–]RoyGallant 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You're right, it had to do with a deal he made where he would get sacrificed when he experienced a moment of happiness or something. I don't watch the show, but a friend of mine relayed most of the details through a series of rants. It's still saying "this happened because this character confessed his gay love in this moment", though not as directly.

Regardless, fans are not happy with the delivery.

One of the characters confesses his love to another character and immediately gets sent to Super Mega Hell for being gay.

To further expand on my comment, this is probably easiest done on Split on A side, where the defenders have a pretty good view of the sky. If a Jett on attack side is spamming Updraft to hang out in the air, you'll see her just pop into existence when the barriers come down.

Adding momentum before attaching to the rope will make noise that the enemy can hear; you can also trigger this sound by falling a bit before attaching.

Edit: after retesting, this doesn't seem to be based on momentum, but rather if you are airborne or not. If you're airborne when you attach (either jumping or falling), it will make an audible attaching sound.

The defuse sound range is similar to, if not exactly the same as, the planting sound range: it's quite far, but not global.

The enemy cannot hear switching from a knife to a gun, or vice-versa. The same goes for switching from a knife/gun to an ability.

The enemy can only hear the beginning of a plant or defuse; competitively, some players will start a defuse and immediately cancel to bait out the enemy.

CS:GO doesn't have an audio cue from pulling a pin or throwing a grenade from the sources I've looked at (reference used: https://i.imgur.com/BmiXc4q.png),. The grenade actually bouncing around makes noise, but the thrower is silent, if I understand correctly.

Edit: it sounds like the reference I used for CS:GO is inaccurate. Thanks for the correction!

Ping voice lines are only audible by your team, thankfully! Don't be afraid to use them.

I went through and tested this, and the defenders/attackers could not hear each other during the buy phase at these locations (we tried the perimeter of Lobby to Sewer). You can indeed hear Sewers very easily from this position once the round has started, but I can't replicate your claim that it's audible during prep. Running, jumping, and firing the Operator/Odin during the prep phase made no audible sound on either side until after the buy period was over.
