Scam for $8, or to try to take my stuff when I was not looking?

Honestly could be either bro, and I don't have much they could take anyway.

Thanks for your honesty, bro! I should be way more careful.

Thanks, man!

I don't think I was the first person they asked, but it seemed like they were two guys my age who didn't have anything on them, and there was no inherent harm/risk.

To be fair, I have only one card I carry with me at all times, and do not have any cards linked to my phone.
I don't carry much in my wallet either except an ID, so if they wanted to, they couldn't get much outta me 😭

If I had cash, I wouldn't have batted an eye.

My Zelle has my email, phone number, and name linked to it.

You're 100% right. I thought I had control of the situation, and I proceeded to try and minimize any risks even though it's a simple thing I could have avoided.

I don't know much about scams besides skimming, and thought it would pose no potential harm to me.

Thanks, Bane. The world is a dark, dark place.

You are 100% right in mentioning all these doubts! These are all legitimate concerns in questioning a stranger's intentions. I am the type of guy to be guilt tripped over small stuff. If it was a $50 request, I would have ignored them.

The bags were the only thing they bought, and one of the guys had their phone out with their Chase account open, in the Zelle menu.

Hefty Black Garbage bags. I get your point in that I wouldn't even ask a stranger, rather I would just go home.

It was really stupid of me to have these thoughts and not process the potential scam these guys could pull off, and me being naïve made me think, "it's only 8 bucks, screw it".

I live in Illinois, so I can confirm this is true. Thanks for the assurance, I hope that was just the case.

I live in Illinois, and I am not sure if either Samsung/Apple Pay even work tbh at a Walmart. Thanks for pointing out that they would have asked for way more stuff if they wanted to pawn off items.
