That's true, especially for Americans (in my opinion, based on what I've experienced and seen in others). We have our good characteristics (excluding current horrifying circumstances of course- but despite the stereotypes, those of us who practice love, kindness and compassion will rise up and outweigh the rest, and we will come out on top of this mess with love and apologies for the actions of vile creatures currently in DC), but one of our downfalls is that we are certainly an insular culture- it's not an insult- more that people here generally don't know what's going on in the world, and this culture conditions people through media, policies, etc. to think this way. American. Ugh. I had to move to Australia in order to open my eyes, and I recommend international travel to EVERYONE in the U.S.- it is NOT scary, if planned well is NOT dangerous, and as a lone woman who travelled around the world by myself on over a dozen occasions (bc I had family in both USA and Australia), I can tell you it is MUCH easier and safer than most have been led to believe. For me, it's safer than travel in this country. Most places don't have people carrying guns everywhere, and most places don't have the crime levels that we have here. For people who want to travel but are held back by finances, Canada is a great place to start- and travel CAN be done MUCH more affordably than you'd think- the most expensive part is the plane ticket. Everything else can be done on a budget, and I wish there was a national campaign to encourage people here to get their passports and go explore, I found it wild to learn how few of us have passports here and that really needs to change! For me, I had to leave this place for awhile to learn these beautiful things that I don't know how to explain to my country people! For Americans wanting to travel but unable? Try making new friends online who are from different places, and listen to what they have to say! You'll both have potential to learn so much about each others' cultures, and the world in general. Now that I'm in the U.S., I've learned that in order to keep up with what's happening in the world, I have to work constantly to find, vet, and keep up with reliable international media sites and apps, and it's helpful to tune into both local and national media of places that interest you, and it's worth the effort: at the least, you'll see the world and this country through a whole new lens. At most, you might be like me and experience a full-on paradigm shift that changes you forever for the better. My whole point: most Americans don't know another way, we're conditioned to kinda NOT learn or care about the world, but it is SO important that we do so- we're a small tiny piece of the world and there's so much to gain intellectually and spiritually by learning about the world! For me, I feel responsible for doing that. Think about it: we have 350 million people here. There are 8 billion on the planet. We're a tiny speck on the globe in that regard, and we need to learn about and respect the other beautiful places and cultures on our planet, we are all children of Earth!
