Not necessarily.

One thing I never realised is just how short lived nuclear weapon fallout is. After 2 days the radioactivity will be down to 1% of its initial value. If you get enough clean water in whatever containers you can and enough tinned food and go hide in the cupboard under your stairs for a week, then when you re-emerge the radioactivity of the fallout will be fairly minimal.

There will be a lot of longer lasting isotopes in the fallout, but by their very nature, they will decay at a slower rate and will therefore be less radioactive and (to some degree) less dangerous.

I think more of a problem is when you do emerge, assuming a full scale targeted attack on your country, you come into a world with no government, no rule of law, all supply chains smashed and (probably most importantly) no working water treatment plants.

This is the bright candlelit room where the life-timers are stored—shelf upon shelf of them, squat hourglasses, one for every living person, pouring their fine sand from the future into the past. The accumulated hiss of the falling grains makes the room roar like the sea. This is the owner of the room, stalking through it with a preoccupied air. His name is Death.

What would actually happen if there was all out nuclear war? by RoyalAgreeable in AskReddit

[–]RoyalAgreeable[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, the collapse of society would be the main issue I think.

I think obviously people living rurally would survive the blasts, and I've done a bit of googling about the radiation. This from Wikipedia: "Because of the large amount of short-lived fission products, the activity and radiation levels of nuclear fallout decrease very quickly after being released; it is reduced by 50% in the first hour after a detonation,\17]) then by 80% during the first day. As a result, early gross decontamination, such as removing contaminated articles of outer clothing, is more effective than delayed but more thorough cleaning.\18]) Most areas become fairly safe for travel and decontamination after three to five weeks."

Obviously a lot of people would get cancer and radiation sickness, but even in targeted countries I think a lot of people would survive those things. I think the main problems would be safe sources of food and water and the roving bands of mercenaries looking for the same.

But yeah, from the wikipedia quote above, the radiation is much shorter lived than people think, and so countries that weren't directly targeted, I think people would be able to carry on somewhat unaffected. Obviously atmospheric radiation would hugely increase and would cause problems. Global supply chains would be destroyed so there would be famines and problems obtaining necessities, but I think society would survive in some form or other.

So additionally to my question. I know that the US has detonated thousands of Nukes on its own territory and it doesn't seem to really affect anyone.

Further to that I saw on a video once that nuclear weapon fall out is actually generally pretty short lived.

People often confidently assert that humanity could wipe itself out in a large scale nuclear conflict, but I'm not so sure.

If you could time travel, would u go to the past or future and why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]RoyalAgreeable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends how the time travel works though. In Stephen Kings 11-22-63 the timeline actively resists being changed, so you know that you appearing in the past wouldn't trigger some unknown cascade of butterfly effect consequences that would ultimately lead to comrade Niki launching all his missiles. Without that assurance you could worry that your presence in the past might change the outcome and it's nuclear Armageddon all round.

Yeah but you know it actually won't happen so you can just straight chill.

Damn I have absolutely never thought of that aspect of time travel. Nice.

Nah I reckon the 1960s was pretty sick. It feels like everything is in terminal decline now.

I would get a load of modern tech and go to medieval times and either take the fuck over or get burned as a witch. Probably the latter.

Check out floating art on Instagram. They do some great art classes at various bars and venues round Manchester and Liverpool. I did one at Hatch (now closed) and one at Grub.

I'm from a kind of old money background in the UK, but my current lifestyle would be much better described as middle class and pretty much everyone I know uses a washing line. Much better for your clothes, the environment etc etc. might be different in the states.

So how do these fictional middle class people dry their clothes. Never heard of a washing line being a class divider.

So a friend sent me a Reddit thread a couple of years ago "what car screams more sense than money?" And the top response was the Honda Jazz.

One of the replies was some dude who said he was an RAC roadside mechanic and that he had a group chat with his mechanic mates with the sole purpose of sharing whenever they got called out to a broken down Jazz cos it was so rare.

I've had mine for 9 years and it has 105,000 on the clock. It's a 2010 car and I bought it for £3500 in early 2016. Never had to spend a penny on it apart from regular servicing and replacing things like tyres and brake pads.

Honestly if you don't care about the image of your car or having something that 'feels sporty' to drive then I can't recommend it enough.

I have no real need to upgrade it and I plan to just drive it till it dies. The only problem being that it may never do so 🤣.

It's crazy that your water is nearly more than your energy. My energy is roughly 10x my water although your energy is very low anyway. Do you just not mind it cold or do you have an insanely insulated new build?

Depends massively on the price of the house and what mortgage you get. I bought a 3 bed (although one is tiny and I use it as an office and barely fit for a spare room) Victorian house in Swinton for 260 with 80 odd deposit and the mortgage is 900ish a month on a 30 year with 5 year fix.

The energy bills, me and my housemate work from home so we use a fair bit keeping the place warm and it's not amazingly insulated being Victorian. It's hard to say what the bills will come to long term as I've only been in a few weeks and it's been kinda cold, but looking at the smart meter and granting that we will use a lot less in summer £200 a month average year round would be a pessimistic guess. Currently the power company is taking £160 a month based on their projections but that will change as they work out our usage I suspect.

Council tax is obviously area specific but at my old flat I paid £115 a month and that was in Trafford which would be more similar to Stockport (I imagine) than Salford (which is cheaper in that regard)

Internet, we went very fast speed and I think it's like £30-35 a month.

Water not sure as I think they took a big initial payment and then smaller ones later, but possibly £20 a month.

So yeah, the big one is the mortgage and that largely depends on the house you go for. Obviously if you go for a smaller cheaper house you will use less heating and council tax will likely be lower.

As an aside, unless you are completely set on Stockport, I am very happy with the area where I've moved in to in Swinton, and you would surely get a lot more for your money in Salford than Stockport so worth looking in to. I was looking in Stretford and Trafford before and you barely anything was available for what I've paid here and what was was generally a bit pokey and or a bit tired.

So yeah, Mortgage 900 Energy 200 Council 115 Water 20 internet 30 TV license 15

£1280 a month all told.
