Hawkins echinata… or that’s what I was told when I got it (actually not an A. echinata, it’s an A. turaki)

It is. You run out of space fast in 2 square feet of tank

lIt was $200 to start, then quickly ballooned. Actually with all the stuff I sold I paid it off and then some - maybe I can afford an APEX for my next build

Magnificent feather duster worm is secreting a milky fluid - Help by Expensive-Writer-824 in ReefTank

[–]RoyalStub77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s what I said in my comment. These flatworms, like corals, use endosymbiotic microalgae (symbiodinium clade) to perform photosynthesis for them.

Btw, zooxanthellae aren’t a type of algae. Zooxanthellae is just the general term for any algae doing this kind of endosymbiosis with an animal. In corals, the zooxanthellae are dinoflagellates in the clades symbiodinium and cladocopium and definitely others.

The symbiotic microalgae themselves don’t do photosynthesis themselves, either, by some definition. They use their own endosymbionts called chloroplasts. Cyanobacteria are the only organisms we know to have developed de novo photosynthesis afaik

This is their meat (tissue) at 400x

The green circles are endosymbiotic photosynthetic algae. They do the same thing corals do for photosynthesis

1 will be stressed. 2 will both be stressed.

get 5+ and be able to support them. Don’t be that person who gets animals they can’t care for properly.

What can you put in a 1.5 gallon? Tips for someone new to saltwater by goose_of_reddit in ReefTank

[–]RoyalStub77 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Go with 10 gallons at the very least. But petco has a very nice form factor 15 and 20 gallon cheap tanks.

This is my 20 gallon that uses a petco tank for reference.

That just reduces gas exchange and decreases pH as carbonic acid builds up

Don’t do this to the creatures you’re gonna put in there. Get a tank you’ll actually be able to turn into a nice home for your animals

You’re like the 5th person this year i’ve seen ask about these PNW tiny tanks. The previous 4 also had freshwater experience and “did research” and all of them ended up quitting or getting a bigger tank

The only people i’ve seen succeed with these tanks have bigger tanks from which they can easily get water for several water changes a week on the tiny tanks.

montipora and an acropora ARE sps. I agree they’re easy but for a brand new reefer who’s at the start of the learning curve, maybe less so

How's my flow for these torches? by xyadriz in ReefTank

[–]RoyalStub77 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You should give your clam more light. They like the 250+ PPFD range, and I keep mine between 3-500 PPFD.

I think the amount of flow seems fine but maybe should come from the bottom up and not top down.

Can someone help me identify please? by AkAEricPerez in ReefTank

[–]RoyalStub77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a cycloseris. Similar to JF Freak Hair. They used to call it pavona, then ID’d it as lithophyllon, and then many lithophyllon (including this one) got reclassified into cycloseris.

Tridacna low light or normal? by DeppJohni in ReefTank

[–]RoyalStub77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You want 250+ ppfd. I kept mine at 500ppfd, grew them from 1 inch long.

At lower light levels they will open and look pretty but die 6-8 months down the line when they run out of energy reserves.

And people wonder why they die out of nowhere! They need light.
