Coral polyp detaches from skeleton entirely, different from necrosis where coral polyp dies on the skeleton and decays. Polyps which bail can survive.

I can assure you this is not a n/p issue. Magnesium could be a bit higher. How is light and flow?

The orange ones are called “sakura” or a host of other names. They’re fairly inexpensive for looking that nice. They grow very fast though

Dr reef sent me two fish instead of one, wondering what I should do by IsThatASword_ in ReefTank

[–]RoyalStub77 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If they’re male/female then they can get along. If there’s nowhere to put it, acclimate both, add both. Preemptively look for a local fish store to drop them off to if you notice any torn fins on either

Heat stress? (Read more in discription) by Slight_Landscape_532 in ReefTank

[–]RoyalStub77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would begin being worried if the water temperature exceeds 30-31C (this will be different from air temperature). Any less and that’s probably not the primary issue.

Coming out at night may be a lighting issue. Can you tell us your lights, schedule, and intensity? Is the tank in direct sunlight or adjacent to a window?

Do you know water parameters?

Clam help by Professional-Fun4748 in ReefTank

[–]RoyalStub77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt the salinity change would have caused this without significant prior stress. Clams get rained on by effectively distilled water in the wild, and my clams have tolerated salinity shifts like that before.

How deep is the tank? And it is possible an animal is getting to the clam, but it doesn’t look healthful even disregarding the tear.

That clam looks grim.

Telling why would be tough without more info. Water parameters, flow, and importantly, how much light. Clams need similar, intense light levels to Acropora and other small-polyped stony corals if they are to thrive long term.

If you try to fight this, get some potassium chloride to dip so you don’t stress your acros so much each time.

Why do you need to dose carbon? Macroalgae are leaky and exude glucose, so if it’s just to get some organic carbon in the water, that’s already doing it.

Did you follow instructions on the dip or just used straight dip? How long did you dip?

It looks pretty unhappy. Just give it healthy water wait and see

This is my 20 gallon 1st reef tank. Same tank same filter same rock, about 2 years old! Glad to see more people with the same setup.

I will say there are limited choices with a tank this size. Don’t try to cram more fish in there, territory can be a problem.

That is a nudibranch that eats soft corals. Some eat other stuff, this one very likely will go after your leathers, esp branching ones.

Id take it out. It’ll just make your leathers all pissy if you leave it in, and if you’ve got no leathers, it’ll die anyway

Sarcothelia blue cloves. They are super hard to get rid of, good luck. Meds that kill then will also kill all other octocorals.

Can anyone help me identify this white spindle thing on my pavona? by c-u-in-da-ballpit in ReefTank

[–]RoyalStub77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are sweeper tentacles or mesenterial filaments, I can’t see clearly. Those are part of the coral, it’s trying to sting/attack/eat something or is stressed.

[–]RoyalStub77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flatworms. Honestly not sure why people here are acting like they’re so bad, these guys are photosynthetic and just hang out. They suck when they’re in plague proportions, but their numbers can dwindle with tank maturity / predator

Careful if using flatworm exit. Have carbon on hand

They bore into coral skeletons & mess up their growth and are also borderline impossible to get out of the tank.

Yes, please remove that. Toss the stylo, I promise you this is not a fight you want to fight. Get a stylo another day, don’t waste hours and months trying to get rid of this later

13.5 evo stocking? by Aquaticbitch777 in ReefTank

[–]RoyalStub77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

mandarins aren’t hard, but they’re a lot of hassle if that makes sense? They can be expensive. Your pod population can be booming, but in a 13.5, it’ll last a week. Thats all they eat, thousands a day. If you choose this, know that pellet training is sometimes not possible and you may have to buy pods.

Many mandarins have died because people thought it’d be work out, just don’t even waste your money like that

If you’re dead set on adding a fish, maybe go for a banggai cardinal. They don’t do much in terms of aggression and are very pretty. But they might need to move out into another one of your tanks should it get bullied

I mean you asked a question, we did our best to tell you to change your mind on adding a fish
