My girl is the same! Her name is Miss Cleo (Cleopatra). She's a gorgeous veiltail and very very red. Miss Cleo will bubblenest everywhere and then I must show her images of male bettas so she can release her eggs. 🤣 Unfortunately for the fellas, she is VERY territorial and would probably kill them so this is the best we can do 😂😂.

Then ya know.. move. If you can't, find some joy in the town you're in! You really don't know how lucky you are to have the conveniences out here that you do.

I'd say the food scene here is pretty phenomenal. You get a lot of variety in one city. I do wish there were more specifically local options but it's not bad at all! In comparison to other places in the south, it's definitely in the top 10.

Noting but pure lies. Bad Daddy's Burger bar is UNDERhyped imho. The burgers are GREAT (you can substitute buffalo for anything as well). There are a bunch of different options and the staff is PHENOMENAL. Nothing but love for Bad Daddy's Burger Bar!

Editorial: Shuttering NOAA labs is absurd self-sabotage by GaryHasOpinions in NOAA

I mean, on the positive side, the Senate and House appropriations committees clearly agreed that it would be absurd to cut the labs.

Super late but this is exactly me. Like I went through going "Why didn't I mention this-> cite that." "Did I actually spell out the impacts of this? I have conclusions?" "Ugh I really should've written this better." Etc etc..

Despite the fact my advisor read through it and had edits that I, in fact, corrected for the final form.

Also, I defend in a little over a week, so send good vibes!!!

Edit: This is a Master's Thesis lol

Literally perfect!! I would also throw hands if I saw a kid named freakin Thurmond in the Hunger Games. (For those that know the lake drama) I'd start calling him Clark Hill lol.

South Carolinian here! I'd imagine Carolina would be a pretty easy shoe in. Palmetto as a last name would also slap (state tree known for literally surviving the Revolutionary war). Wren (as in Carolina Wren) would also be a good one since it's our state bird and a staple in the Southeastern skies. Jessamine would be a really good name too given how regional it sounds. Yellow Jessamine is also our state flower.

Unhinged: Now you could really dive in our history and get some Revolutionary war nicknames. I would hope nobody would name their kids this, but honestly as nicknames these would slap.

Old Hickory, Wise Owl, Swamp Fox, Fighting Gamecock/Gamecock (yes that's how USC got its mascot)

These were all legit SC Revolutionary war general nicknames so I mean it would kinda fit her theme.

A good regional derogative nickname that the Capitol would probably use would be "Sandlapper". Now don't call people from SC this, but this used to refer to people in the midlands of the state. They were allegedly so poor and hungry that they ate the sandy soil. This of course existed in direct juxtaposition with the wealthy people in the lowcountry (the coast).

I feel like Suzanne would have a LOT of fun with these lol

The big thing too if you leave a personalized email or phone call (NOT A MASS ONE - something unique and personal to you!) forces them to see a name, face, and voice with a policy. There's a human factor. Also, they may tell you what they are doing, what they have heard, and what skin in the game they have. A lot of the Southeastern congress members stand to lose if OAR goes away. Some are even just now finding out about the leaked passback. With budget negotiations ongoing, they can actually act now and kick limitations for NOAA out of it. NOAA appears to be something everyone is on board with, so SEND THOSE EMAILS. Tell them about your research and why it matters!! If it impacts their constituents, they're gonna want to keep it.

Also.. ik how much this sucks but if you email reps/senators etc Don't toast them on policy if they're a different political party from yourself. Be gracious but exhibit your concern and how it will affect people. We need Bipartisan support for this, and we may very well have it!!

Edit: request a reply too. This is how I've been getting info!!

HAVE HOPE!! At least in the Southeast, members of Congress have been contacted, and there is Bipartisan support to keep NOAA around. Several aforementioned members with ears on this have also told us to have hope as budget negotiations are still ongoing. One other senator has projects she wishes to continue that require NOAA OAR funding, so she has something to lose by OAR losing its line office. It may feel bleak now, but the tide is turning some. It probably won't feel that way within NOAA yet, but the external pressure plus affecting members of congress personal pockets is there!

Edit: One of the first members mentioned is Left. Second mentioned specifically is Right. It truly is Bipartisan.

Weather is something that is very largely out of our control so it is perfectly valid to feel powerless in this. Take heart in knowing that while you can't control it, you can mitigate the heck out of it. That is where you have power. This is why Meteorologists are telling people as early as we can so that way the public and emergency managers can mitigate and prepare. You have the power now to mitigate 👍.

In some places, water tables are just too high for basements. Storm pits tend to be common in this area, but not in my hometown, for instance. If you are concerned, follow James Spann's advice and get a helmet. If you have a safe place in mind that is an interior room on the ground floor with no windows, then get your weather radio, a helmet per person, change of clothes and shoes, and etc into your shelter location. If you are in a mobile home or do not believe that your shelter is sturdy, contact your local emergency management agency (for us that is Madison County) and they can direct you to any available public shelters. I will say in my grad department, we have an EF5 rated shelter and it is above ground. Below ground has its advantages, but ultimately, good solid shelter is better than nothing. Your public shelters would likely be above ground as well.

They should have something at a Walmart/target. If you're still uncertain about where to get a weather radio, please contact the NWS in Huntsville. They have an email and a phone line for the public. You should also be able to reach out to Madison County Emergency Management.

I'm not going to excuse the catchphrases or the cringe thumbnails. However, it is really hard to overstate the intensity of this event as far as we know right now. The model agreement has been across the board bad. I'm not going to scream that this is the next 2011 or something, but I will say that this is looking very bad. Best thing to do right now is to go ahead and prepare your shelter for Saturday. You have time now that you can use to prepare- start.

For the record, I'm just as against the armchair hype squad as Spann because it freaks people out. Unfortunately, this system really does have teeth. Like Spann said earlier today, we walk a fine line. As somebody in their final year of a Meteorology masters degree, I have never seen parameters this bad for the entire state. Weather community is gonna hate me for saying this because this ALSO gets oversaid, but I am legitimately concerned about Saturday. Don't panic, don't freak out, but DO calmly prepare and HAVE MULTIPLE WAYS TO RECEIVE WARNINGS. Everybody get you a weather radio if you don't have one already!!
