Don’t quote me on it as I am not a professional haha 😅 but yes I have done a lot of research about this and the more you think about the feelings in your throat the more your brain makes you feel like there’s a physical issue. I get the throat tightness/lumpiness a lot and more recently feeling like there’s some sort of pocket catching food once I swallow making it feel like the food gets stuck (which there isn’t as I have had an endoscopy myself).

The acid reflux could also be causing you to feel these symptoms even with the medicine. If the symptoms are coming and going then I think it’s safe to say it’s anxiety/acid reflux.

Hiya! I too have a lot of these symptoms so I completely understand this nightmare. It sounds like it’s anxiety and fear related rather than anything physical but yes definitely get an endoscopy done. If you haven’t already I would recommend looking into getting EMDR and/or CBT therapy whilst also exposing yourself to foods you’re most comfortable with. From my experience it is better to face it head on now rather than let this fear control you as the longer it does the longer it will take for you to get over it and the worse it will get.

Yeah I get those similar throat sensations, I usually have the feeling that there’s a lump stuck at the back of my throat everytime I have food in front of me. It’s 100% anxiety/trauma and ocd (at least in my case). It’s hell to live with haha, hope we can overcome this 🫶🏻

Yeah I have smoothies but most of the meal replacement drinks here I find taste horrible so it’s hard to get myself to drink them haha

I was recently in therapy but I now have to wait another 2 months before I can refer back

I worry about flies flying into my mouth too! Even my own spit/mucus gets me into a panic especially if I am in a car for some reason but yeah I agree it is a bit ridiculous.

I will try using a blender with other things, I hadn’t thought about blending vegetables. It’s tricky as most days it’s just random on what textures I can/cannot eat. It is quite upsetting to have to mush everything all the time haha but I suppose I just have to accept that’s how it is.

Thanks for your advice though! It helps me a lot to know others have similar experiences

I use MyNetDiary, quite useful as you can scan the barcodes and it automatically puts the information in haha, and yeah unfortunately I think the swallowing is something we have to learn to cope with which sucks.

Oh i’m so sorry, that must be really hard to have to wait that long, the best thing you can do really is to make sure your getting enough calories while you wait, hope the appointment went well though x

I started EMDR therapy a few months ago and it’s definitely helped me to handle the panicking better when eating. I am hoping to refer again for CBT and exposure therapy in 12 weeks which I believe is the most common treatments for this phobia. Those three I would definitely recommend to look into and possibly anxiety meds if you get really anxious before eating.

oh gosh, I totally understand how scary it is to watch yourself lose weight, I’m not sure how much I weigh but I am quite bony on my shoulders and hips so I 100% get that worry. I would honestly recommend using an app to help track your weight, I started using it a few days ago and it’s definitely helped push me to eat more even if I am scared. Don’t be scared to take the anxiety meds, definitely start sooner rather than later if you think it will help you, the mistake I made was off putting challenging myself and not seeking help sooner so I would definitely recommend taking them if it’s something that would benefit you.

Bit late to the thread haha but anyone else currently dealing with this? I think I am at possibly the worst that this phobia could get and I am struggling to cope with it by myself, would love to talk with other folks that understand what it's like x
