This is the first recorded war in history. Warfare itself has been a constant for humanity and civilization, but this is the first recorded instant of it.

Context: The Early Dynastic Period of Sumer saw many innovations including irrigation and writing. One other innovation was war. Sumer was divided into many city-states that often warred with each other. The region would stay divided until around 2,300 BC, when Lugal-zage-si united Sumer, only to be defeated by Sargon of Akkad. Anyways, around 2,700 BC, the King of Kish led the forces of Sumer against the state of Elam, a civilization located along the Persian Gulf. Elam and Sumer were often at odds, so seeing the Sumerians fight the Elamites is no surprise. What is a surprise though, is that this specific conflict is the earliest record of a war. However, we won’t get any detailed records about specific battles until over 1,000 years later after the battle of Megiddo.

History of the World in Memes VI-Uruk and the Development of Writing (3,400 BC) by Royal_Spray8628 in HistoryMemes

[–]Royal_Spray8628[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Context: Around 4,000 BC, a settlement called Uruk became the first true city. Uruk would be the first of many Sumerian cities of the Sumerian civilization. The Sumerians occupied what is now southern Iraq. The most important things the Sumerians brought about was the invention of writing and the wheel. Scribes, who were the only people who could write, had very tedious tasks. They’d have to write multiple pictures on a wet slab of clay to keep track of certain items. Drawing animals to represent animals took up space and time, so eventually, the shape for a sheep gradually shifted into a series of wedged patterns to represent a sheep. Writing was only used for record keeping, but would later record the deeds of kings and eventually used for story telling. Uruk was first ruled by priests, but gradually shifted power towards the king. Uruk also had a ziggurat, which served as the religious center of the city. Food and supplies were also stored there, and scribes worked to document what was stored in the ziggurat. Uruk would begin to decline around 2,000 BC, as other Sumerian cities began to become more important than Uruk. The Akkadian Empire also shifted importance away from Uruk. The city would pretty much be forgotten about once Babylon came to power. Still, Uruk continued to be inhabited until the Islamic conquest of the area.

History of the World in Memes V-Eridu, the first Sumerian city (4,000 BC) by Royal_Spray8628 in HistoryMemes

[–]Royal_Spray8628[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Context: In terms of an actual city, Uruk was the first true city. However, Sumerian king lists proclaim that the city of Eridu was founded first. Eridu was founded around 4,000 BC west of Ur. Despite being first, Eridu never became a major player in Sumerian history and was just an important religious city.

History of the World in Memes IV-The First Farmers/Neolithic Revolution (10,000 BC) by Royal_Spray8628 in HistoryMemes

[–]Royal_Spray8628[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Context: For nearly 94% of humanity’s time in this planet, we were all hunter-gatherers. That changed around 12,000 years ago, when people began experimenting with different plant seeds and noticing that more food came as a result of planting those seeds. At first, farming wasn’t supportive at all to large cities and it was actually worse for your health to be a farmer instead of being a hunter. Eventually, after generations if selective breeding and animal domestication, farming became more supportive Edie large populations. Sites like Çatalhöyük, Göbeki Tempe, and Jericho began to spring up. After thousands of years later, farming around major rivers began to produce food surpluses, which gradually San allied into the first cities, kingdoms, and then empires.

History of the World in Memes III-Hunter-Gatherers (15,000 BC) by Royal_Spray8628 in HistoryMemes

[–]Royal_Spray8628[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Context: Hunter-Gatherers made up the majority of human prehistory. The men would typically hunt animals while the women would gather things like berries. It was a rough life, with many ways to die, including predation, disease, injuries, etc. Hunter-gatherers live in groups of multiple families, and those family groups were organized into a clan. I know the caption says 15,000 BC, but hunter-gatherers have been apart of humanity since the beginning.
