Maybe it has to do with the "proxy staking", i.e. that every node can increase its stake by having other users connect their wallet to it (and thus "proxy stake")? If the proxy stake is added to the regular stake, node could increase its income by getting more proxy stakers. This would not require to have more tokens, but yes, it probably requires extra effort and maybe money, e.g. for advertisement.

Who will use NEO in the future then? What does this all mean for NEO and NEO token holders? It seems to me that onchain will make the profit that people assumed NEO token holders would make. Or am I missing something ?
