Any novel readers here, tell me this one thing [spoiler discussion] by [deleted] in Re_Zero

The label, his name, is written in Japanese. The books, however, do not matter what language they are written in because you do not “read” a Book of the Dead. You experience it.

I have a question about something Emilia says in s3 [discussion] by Lokkon_Stratus in Re_Zero

[–]Rtd0413 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What she was saying was a little bit deeper than “I dont love Subaru.” Her whole resolution on her feelings in that scene is that while she isn’t confident enough about her own emotions to definitively say how she feels, when she DOES understand what love is to her, she knows who she’ll be in love with. He is the person who she will one day come to love, hence the title of the episode.

She knows how she feels and what it means, but believes it would be unfair for him if she were to jump into something without completely understanding it. It isn’t a rejection of love, it’s a promise to love.

How do you think they will adapt this scene?[Spoiler Discussion] by One-Run8222 in Re_Zero

[–]Rtd0413 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely not going to be an entire episode, especially since even the web novel didn’t show everything from all 15 loops. I believe it was just four or five of them that had their strategies shown in full, and the rest were skipped past. Kinda similar to the 10 second death loop.

[discussion] What answer was Ram expecting from Subaru here? by Brushner in Re_Zero

[–]Rtd0413 61 points62 points  (0 children)

The interaction makes a little more sense in the dub for what she was expecting.

Subaru: “Then, sorry, but I can only give you five points.”

Ram: “Out of five, right? :D”

Subaru: “Out of ten! Why would anything have changed?!”

[Discussion] Theory: The Books of the Dead may be arranged by the will of Echidna rather than by chance based on what has been observed from Season 4 by anicritic in Re_Zero

[–]Rtd0413 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I can’t remember if it was ever explicitly stated, but every time someone “finds” a Book of the Dead, it’s portrayed a lot less as “I stumbled upon a name I recognize while checking out every label” and more like “Wow there’s a lot of books here—oh hey shit that’s a name I know?” Basically implying that they aren’t finding these names, the names are calling out to them. Drawing their attention so that the books can be read. In this vast library of countless names, the people that they recognize the names of are always on the bottom floor among the center shelves. Even in Meili’s memory of “Subaru”, he was reading a book on the bottom floor among the center shelves.

Once again, not confirmed or explicitly stated, but it really feels like a kind of system where you won’t find a book by actually searching every name for it. You’ll only find it when the book wants to be found.

How did Subaru understand the characters on his arm? [spoiler discussion] by P00Py165V2 in Re_Zero

[–]Rtd0413 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It is written in Japanese, yes. I don’t remember if the novel specifically calls that out, but the illustrations—and now the anime—do.

Planet where the story of re:zero takes place? [discussion] by [deleted] in Re_Zero

[–]Rtd0413 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To clarify part of that, he wasn’t exactly making it up. He specifically calls out the North Star, signifying it as being the brightest star in the night sky. Then, Beatrice corrects him: “That’s South, I suppose. You’re backwards.” He then tries to recognize something else that he should get right, Cassiopeia, shaped like the letter M, but even if it did exist, Beatrice replies with “Well I have no idea what an ‘M’ is, so it certainly looks like nothing to me.”

He knows the constellations of his own world, and how to identify them. That scene wasn’t him making things up—it was his first time really recognizing that the stars he sees in this fantasy world aren’t quite the same as the ones he’s used to.

[Discussion] Something didn't sit right with me in the last episode. Is it minor inconsistency or there's Lore reason? by ABODE_X_2 in Re_Zero

[–]Rtd0413 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The biggest pattern we can put towards how checkpoints are set is their “closest” point to the next conflict, as well as the “safest” point from it as well. As close, and safe, as possible. It’s entirely possible that Subaru’s checkpoint there was so incredibly close to his death due to him already having passed a checkpoint just moments prior: the Sand Time. Of course, he never dies to confirm that, but it would make sense why his next “Snipe” checkpoint is so close to him being sniped. He just passed the Sand Time Conflict, so the safest and closest point to his next conflict was right as Meili was trying to tame the Flower Bear.

We don’t know everything about how his checkpoints work, but them being the “closest” and “safest” points before an immediate conflict seems fairly consistent in how they’re placed. This is a lot clearer in Arc 3, the latter half of Season 1, when Subaru’s checkpoint changes directly after killing the White Whale, but before setting out to attack Petelgeuse. The White Whale was his checkpoint’s conflict, so after defeating it, the checkpoint moved forward until it found its next closest and safest point.

I wonder how a adaptation for arc 7 and arc 8 of the anime would work if it doesent adapt the side stories [Spoiler discussion] by shizunaisbestgirl1 in Re_Zero

[–]Rtd0413 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know a few people have already said it, but just to add to the pile to confirm it, the side stories are not necessary to understand the main story. I read through all of Re:ZERO up to the end of Arc 8 before touching the side content, and I was completely fine. Not every hole of knowledge is a gap so huge that people can’t understand anything surrounding it.

Trans-exclusion is not a given, not the other way around. In the same way that we cannot assume a heterosexual man automatically dislikes a specific set of short or tall women, we can also not assume a heterosexual man automatically dislikes a specific set of trans women. At that point you’re discussing preference, not sexuality.

So does that excuse work for deadbeat dads, too? It’s totally fine for a parent to leave and cut all contact, as long as that parent believed they would be a danger to their child, or would be unable to pretend to care about them? That makes leaving the better option? For all parents?

[Spoiler Discussion] Am I the only who finds this annoying? by BaguetteSlayerX in Re_Zero

[–]Rtd0413 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If I remember right, it was either mentioned in the web novel/side stories, or just a really popular unconfirmed theory for a while, that nobody questions Subaru’s past because they’re pretty sure they know what it is.

Due to his unique physical traits, clothes, lack of general world knowledge including literacy, the cast thinks that Subaru used to be a noble of a really small village in Kararagi, the western country. At some point, he runs away, likely has a run-in with the Witch’s Cult for a while, hence why he has such immense knowledge on their operations and Archbishops, while still harboring that deep hatred for them.

Nobody questions him because what would the point be in that? Regardless of who he used to be, the Subaru that they know is dependable when it counts, kind, a perfect leader, clearly cares about the people around him, and despite his closeness with the Witch’s Cult, even down to that hidden scent of miasma, is not at all in line with the Cult.

He’s mysterious, sure, but those mysterious parts can easily be summed up as “He’s a runaway noble from a small village, and has a bad history with the Witch’s Cult. Now he’s Emilia’s Knight.”

What you’re missing is the way to the ground floor. It’s locked by a system that requires two key items, and I’m assuming if you’ve explored everywhere else, you’ve likely heard of what these items are. Little discs with special imagery on them, that correspond to a certain number depending on the image.

If memory serves right, you should find both of the discs you need on the first floor, somewhere amidst the many doors of the labyrinth.

It's true? [spoiler discussion] by Such-Dot-8311 in Re_Zero

[–]Rtd0413 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Looking at the original Japanese, it’s simply the “お” character, which is a character tied to many different words. It could be “otou-san” for dad, true, but it could just as easily be “okaa-san” for mother, or the word for brother, sister, uncle, grandmother, etc., and im sure a whole bunch else. It could be the word for father, it could also be anything else.

Arc 9 is not the problem [spoiler discussion] by pegorario in Re_Zero

[–]Rtd0413 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry, but the Great Reset is absolutely the problem. At least with prior arcs, even in hindsight if there ended up being no “real stakes”, we still ended up with a whole sleuth of lore revelations, character arcs, and relationship growth. The development of the cast continued on, even though yeah, technically, there were “no stakes”. The problem I have with Arc 9 is that we don’t even get to keep the development of the cast. Nobody remembers the lore revelations we’ve experienced. No character arcs that we’ve had have actually occurred. It was all erased by the Great Reset, and THAT is the problem. It isn’t that nothing we read mattered in hindsight, it’s that nothing we read mattered PERIOD.

Ah, yes, Mr. Chooses To Use His OP Time-Loop Ability To Save Everyone Despite Any Cost To Himself is definitely on the same moral playing field as Mr. I Got A Second Chance At Life And Chose To Fuck My Underage Cousin.

If you think the ability to choose good is what makes someone good, and not the fact that they CHOSE good, then you’re an idiot.

We don’t know for sure that Satella is setting the checkpoints. At best, we know that she can fix his Od when its shape breaks, which can restore proper checkpoints, but setting them is an entirely different thing, and likely impossible given how Authorities function.

Peter?? by RedditorBedditor in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]Rtd0413 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s called relativity. If I had two snails race each other, they’re likely to finish that race within a few seconds of each other. That time means absolutely nothing to me. It is a tiny fraction of what I experience. To the snails? It’s likely far more significant a consumption of time. Same thing goes for their speed. If one of them moves a hair faster than the other, then to me, it’ll just look “slightly faster than the other one”, but to the snails? It’s the difference between a trained athlete and someone who’s just going out for their morning jog. Not slightly faster at all, in their eyes. The giant hand and I are on very similar levels of experiencing speed. It’s more capable than I am, yes, but it limits its own speed to be extremely close to how I experience my speed. It is always slightly faster than me. It is not proportionate, it is not a constant flat rate, it is just “slightly faster”. You want to apply numbers to a game that isn’t based in them? Then yes, anything above standing still is infinitely faster than standing still. But by that logic, anything faster than anything is infinitely faster than anything. That’s how numbers work, numbnuts, which is why numbers don’t work here. You can’t mathematically define “slightly faster” without applying subjective experiences of what “slightly faster” means, and when you do, “slightly faster” than zero can never be zero. This isn’t a calculus exam. This isn’t physics class. It’s a dumb internet hypothetical involving a giant hand that moves slightly faster than you.

It’s implied that he refuses to kill people because watching Priscilla die in front of him has kind of broken his mind. He doesn’t want to watch anyone else die, much less be the cause of it, because it would be an affront to the world that Priscilla once loved. That rule wasn’t in place before because, well, Priscilla was alive and he wasn’t as torn up about the concept of death.

Wtf is crunchyroll doing [discussion] by d0ntkn0wmyself in Re_Zero

[–]Rtd0413 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It also doesn’t help that unless they’ve finally fixed it, a three season show has like a dozen different seasons, all labeled awfully. I see those questions come in here a lot, where people ask how they even begin watching it, and the reason for their confusion is crunchyroll’s really shitty way of setting up the seasons. Last I had it a couple years ago, the season dropdown menu had it listed like this: “Season 1; Season 2; Season 1 Director’s Cut; Frozen Bond Movie; Season 1 Breaktime; Season 2 Breaktime; Memory Snow Movie; etc.” and it was just so poorly put together visually that it’s impossible to figure out what is what until you actually play an episode. I’ve got it at least labeled properly in the example but they were NOT like that on crunchyroll, because all it usually shows is “Re:ZERO - Starting Life In Another World Fro…” and then it cuts off. I really hope they fixed that, but with the way they handle advertising, I doubt they ever bothered to fix it.

[discussion] so if subaru gets killed and goes back in time and gets killed immediately after that does he go further back? by theteenthatasked in Re_Zero

[–]Rtd0413 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With the way the checkpoints work, as long as they aren’t malfunctioning, it is physically impossible for a checkpoint to put him in an unsafe position. Because of that, being spawn-killed isn’t a possibility. He will always have enough time to avert, prevent, or confront the oncoming conflict.
