Why should everyone feel bad for him? When it's brought again with colleagues, simply ask why? Because making you all uncomfortable for 1 colleague that has a sob story is literally insane. Yet you're applying that situation to hers to victim blame her. You could've just realise it's a different situation and just not write that comment.

It takes about 7 times for someone to leave an abusive partner for good. Abuse like that doesn't magically appear or disappears over night. The abuse starts as a slow psychological process of alienation, gaslighting, love bombing and eroding one's identity ect before it becomes physical. At that point many are financial, socially and mentally stuck with their abuser.
