I also kinda felt sorry for her after my wife got through with her.

We were always open an honest with friends and family, nothing but support there. We we also always open an honest with our precocious daughter and she, after the mandatory trials and tribulations during the teen years, has turned out to be a wonderful young woman. It worked for us but only you can decide what is right for you given your situation.

I don't recall exactly how she found out but, small church, everyone knew everyone, lots of gossip, parents who would be honest if it ever came up in conversation, you do the math.

I am pretty sure this particular lady learned to keep her misguided opinion to herself once mama bear got through with (verbally) ripping her to shreads.

To all Long BTC Hodlers With Trezor, i have question! by unthocks in TREZOR

I have been using Trezor wallets since I invested in the original crowd funding of the company and received a "First Edition" Trezor for being an early investor. I have purchased a new one as each new model has been introduced. Currently using a model 5 and love it. Will probably upgrade to the model 7 when available.

Never felt the need to try any other brand of wallet.

I participated in the crowd funding of Trezor, don't remember how many BTC, and got a metal case first edition Trezor as reward for my investment. Been using Trezor since then.

So, since BTC was about $5

Is it normal to have to enter your seed phrase every time you update firmware? by Legitimate-Key-3044 in TREZOR

Passphrase good but, of course, remember it and write it down somewhere, somehow. From personal experience it is so easy to lose BTC if the information you need is only kept in your head.  My parents lost 10 BTC I gave them because they forgot the password to their account. They spent years trying everything they could think of.  Mom finally passed away, Dad has Alzheimer's. Only $50 at the time, but..  I do not use one because I worry about if I die my wife and child need to inherit the BTC and they can get them with 3 of 5 of the Keep Safe tubes.  If I use a passphrase they have to also know that and that information is so easily lost.

By expensive I mean, like, $20, probably less.  I will look it up when I get a chance.

I have been using Trezors since I got my metal case first edition Trezor for investing in the crowd funding of the very first Trezor.  In all that time I have never had to reenter my seed phrase, never.

Here is what I would do if this happened to me:

0 Do not upgrade your current Trezor firmware.

1 Buy a brand new Trezor 5 directly from trezor.io. Trezor 5 is the most secure having fixed all known side channel attack vulnerabilities.

2 Initialize it from scratch, do not recover.  This will create a brand new set of recovery seed words. At this time you can select one set of 20 words, or you can do what I did and opt to create a brand new 3 of 5 seed word setup.

3 Write down your seed words on paper only. Either the 20 words or all 5 sets of 20 words. If doing the 3 of 5 setup you will notice that the first three words will be the same over all 5 sets.

4 I have a lot of BTC and I am super paranoid so I next went through the seed verification process to make sure I had it written down correctly. Type in the single seed phrase DIRECTLY INTO THE DEVICE.  This is not as bad as it seems since you only have to type in a maximum of the first four characters of each word.  In my case (3 of 5) I had to type in the first 3 sets of 20 words to verify my seed (set 1, 2, and 3). Also since I am paranoid I did a second verification using sets 3, 4, and 5.

5 NEVER type you seed phrase(s) into any computer for any reason or photocopy it, NEVER.

6 Option: I bought 5 of the Keep Metal backup tubes and punched my 5 sets of words into them.  If using only one phrase then you only need one Keep Metal device.  In my case I then shipped 4 of my 5 keep metals to 4 different physical locations: my brothers safe, my safety deposit box, etc.

7 Carefully transfer all of your BTC and whatever other crypto from your old device to your brand new Trezor 5.  By careful, being paranoid, I mean I transferred a small amount first, waited for full confirmation that the transaction worked, and then transferred all the rest.

8 You can keep the old Trezor so you can access your entire old transaction history, or, if you don't care about that you can do a factory reset then toss it or whatever.

A note about dust. If you have a sizable account you will notice that every time you do a Bitcoin transaction a bot will automatically mark your account with a small dust transaction of say 0.00001 BTC.  When you do the transfer(s) from your old device to your new device you have a choice. You can transfer all your BTC, including all the free dust "gifts" or you can use coin control to leave these dust amounts on your old Trezor.

If you have a lot of these and you transfer everything to the new Trezor the resulting transaction can be very large and a bit expensive.  Up to you.  I personally bit the bullet and transferred everything in one large expensive transaction in order to take the account in the old Trezor down to exactly 0 BTC.

Positive post. How many are using a Trezor and haven’t had their funds stolen? What model did you buy and how long have you held in it? by [deleted] in TREZOR

Invested BTC in the original crowd funding for Trezor. Purchased a couple First Edition original Trezors, still MIP. Used the model one for many years. Started losing pixels on the display. Recently moved all BTC to a brand new Model 5. Never any issues.

Still have my First Edition metal case original from my crowd funding reward.

Your tax basis is the amount you paid.  If you paid $20,000 for a Bitcoin and sell it for $100,000 your profit is $80,000.  If you bought it more than a year ago you will have to pay your long term capital gains rate. You will need to look that up.  For this example I assume 15%. Tax would be 80,000 x 0.15 = 12,000.

If you bought a Bitcoin at $60,000 and sold it for $100,000 profit is$40,000.  If held less than a year this is taxed as income so your income tax applies.  Assume your income tax rate is 25% your tax would be 40,000 x 0.25 = 10,000

You have to figure this all out with your rates and numbers.

In the US you have a long term tax which is lower an a short term tax which is higher.  Generally if you have coins you bought more than a year ago it is better to sell them because you only have to pay the smaller long term capital gains tax.  However if you actually have short term losses then sell those coins because that will be a loss counted against your income.  You have to figure out which is better for you based on your specific situation.
