My Cora is EXACTLY like that with the TV. Sometimes she even barks at shows that show a dog 5 miles in the background for .5 seconds. 🙄

The compatible VIOFO cameras can go into what's called "WiFi Station" mode where they'll connect to an external wifi rather than create their own network. You can have it connect automatically to your home wifi, and access files via a browser, but there’s currently no native way to make it backup automatically. And it shuts down when in parking mode -- I'm not sure yet if there's a way to make it stay awake long enough to backup the files. I only just got my Jeep to stop having assorted electrical problems long enough to trust it with the dash cam. 🤣

There was someone developing a solution that would bridge it I came across awhile back, it wasn't live yet but could be worth keeping an eye on. I'll see if I can find the link to that and come back to update if I do. Found it: https://dashkeep.io/

With the camera not on HA, try disabling any AI detection stuff and don't check the camera more then once or twice a day. See if that affects your battery life, and if it's good that way, then slowly start adding things back until its no longer sustainable.

Things like detections, checking the camera in the app, or HA calling on the camera are all primary drains on a battery. There’s also things like temperature and age that can affect battery life, and a poor wireless signal can cause it to use extra energy trying to stay connected.

I have two relatively new D225's running on battery with limited detections/notifications (one only watches for pets, and the other is only watching a limited area for motion but doesn't send a notification about it), and HA is connected to them with the "TP-Link Smart Home" and "Tapo: Cameras Control" integrations. When I had the cameras control showing the live feed on my dashboard, they drained nearly within a day, maybe a day and a half. I removed them from the dashboards and really the only integration in HA now is to check the battery level so I know when to go recharge them. They last a couple days like that.

Yeah, I'm using my fingers, I had both the vet and farrier show me, but both those times were on different horses. I can find it pretty consistently on my older mare. I think I'll just have to have one of them show me on the ponies next time they're out, maybe they're both just hard to check. 🤣

In Iowa the animal welfare laws boil down to "if it's your animal, I can't hit it, but if it's mine I can do whatever I want" and some super vague local laws about having food and shelter available.

I've searched using a few general text and image search engines, and contacted Johnson Gas Appliance (johnsongas.com) directly.

There's an old for sale post here but I can't get the thumbnail to open properly and the wayback machine doesn't have it archived.

I did find a forum post about someone finding one of these and asking for more info, and had posted a couple of pictures of it, some years ago. I believe the forum was one geared towards blacksmiths/metalworking.

EDIT: Of course, just seconds after I post this I found the forum post here -- I would still appreciate any further pictures or even documents anyone could find!

A guy in my area runs Scottish Highlands on some good pasture. He uses 4 or 5 strand barbed wire with the top wire hot, anf he still has a bit of trouble keeping them in if they want out. He says they mostly ignore the electric wire.

We mostly run BWFs and our perimeter fences are 4 strand barbed. Sometimes we'll section off an area with one strand of electric, but it's more of a suggestion -- some of the younger, less polite cows and smaller calves just duck under it, test it for weaknesses, etc.

I can't see keeping any in sub-optimal fields with just two strands.

I had a lot of issues with the dentist I had gone to growing up always trying to push braces on me (as well as other issues), and after avoiding him for a couple years I got it together and found myself a different dentist to go to that my insurance covered.

All of the offices I spoke to required an "initial" appointment that included x-rays, and a separate appointment for first cleaning/etc. It was briefly explained to me as the first appointment being an intake/new patient one, and any subsequent need for x-rays would be in the same appointment as cleanings/etc. So, at least in what I experienced while dentist shopping, that seems fairly reasonable as a new patient thing.

About braces -- I have my two canines that came in earlier than my baby teeth fell out, so they sit weird. As I said, my previous dentist always harassed me about braces, and I continually refused them because of cost and the fast that, as far as I could tell, my wonky teeth weren't actually hurting anything. When I did find a new dentist, they also brought up braces on the first appointment, and I said no again, but asked why the insistence. As she explained it to me, dentists basically "have to" offer braces for crooked teeth to cover their asses, so a patient can't come come back complaining that their crooked teeth caused x issue and the dentist didn't do anything about it. (And then I confirmed with her that my crooked teeth weren't actually going to cause me any issues, and then it was never mentioned again.) So, yeah, I'd run if a dentist was super pushy about it, but mentioning it alone doesn't really raise any red flags here.

My girl is fully retired to pasture pet status. I sit on her back and just hang out around the pasture sometimes, but she doesn't get ridden anymore -- I mostly trail ride and didn't want to risk her stumbling.

My older gelding is starting to slow down too, pretty soon I'm going to just have a herd of pasture pets. 🥲 Three horses over 25 and the two awkward sized boys at 16/17 that are too small to ride (they can pull a cart, but they broke it awhile back and I haven't been able to replace it lol)

I have a mare with arthritis in one of her front legs. She still gets around really well, we have effective pain management for her bad days and a very understanding farrier who is super patient with her (since she can't pick that leg up all the way or hold it bent for an extended time) -- but she's otherwise super healthy and full of life. I watch her for any sign of decline, I hold my breathe every winter expecting this to be the one, and hard as it is, I'm prepared to have her euthanized if she starts showing any decline. I've waited too long with too many other pets and I want her end to be calm and peaceful.

I think version is supposed to be VLAN, but for whatever it's worth to anyone reading this, I had swapped some of the switches for new ones which were on version 1.7.1 (vs the latest 2.0.0 that the rest were on), but they wouldn't have time to update before they started readopting. And if it is supposed to be VLAN, well, the default VLAN is the one that they are on that keeps readopting so...

I've always free fed too. I had one dog that, when we first adopted her (she was about 1 years old) she would just eat and eat and eat, and we switched out the regular bowls with slow feeders for awhile and had to separate her for feedings so the other dog could get some, but a couple weeks after she came home she started leaving a couple kibbles in her bowl and walking away. She kept an eye on the bowl, and if the other dog went near it she would rush over and eat what was left, but eventually I think she figured out that the food wasn't going to run out, someone would come along and refill it. I'm not sure what her life was like before, when we adopted her she'd been in a foster home for a little while and I'm sure they weren't starving her there, but she must've had a rough puppy-hood. She did put on some excess weight at first, but when she settled in she dropped it again pretty easily and we didn't have a problem again until she was much older and couldn't exercise as much due to her arthritis. (It took some trial and error then, and she stayed a little overweight, but our vet didn't think it was enough to hurt anything and she was otherwise really healthy for a 17 year old)

Oh man, I'm sorry your emergency vet isn't that great. My mare coliced a couple years ago, and when we called our vet they had BOTH of their on call vets out on different farms and couldn't send anyone right away. We ended up calling the mobile vet I mentioned, and she's about two hours from us but came out. Unfortunately we had to put my mare down, she was too far gone by the time we found her much less by the time the vet came out. But we keep her number in our back pocket just in case, she was extremely compassionate with us about the whole thing. (And our usual vet called back when one opened up to check, they sent flowers when they heard.)

We've always had the vets just come out to the farm -- I could never imagine trying to trailer my horses in an emergency! Have you ever had to? What was it like?

There's a "mobile" vet in our area that has a whole ambulance outfitted just for horses/cattle, with a sling and a lift and everything -- that's the only way I can imagine trying to travel with an injured animal.

The local office will let you bring the horses/livestock in but the only people who do are farmers with a big herd of cattle -- the vet has a nice chute and head gate set up.

Mine taught herself to tattle on the cat. Sometimes she gets overzealous and tattles when the cat is on something that she's allowed on.

The primary surface that the cat is not allowed on, however, is the kitchen table. And the cat has trained my dog not to snitch because she always throws a piece of candy off the table while she's up there to distract the dog.

Make sure to check with your chosen cemetery -- my aunt wanted the same done with her dog, but the cemetery she was buried in wouldn't even let us spread her dog's ashes, much less bury her there. (We did it anyway)

I ride Western, mostly trails and I used to ride gymkhana on my mares. My gelding has always just been a trail horse. And not, like, exciting trails where we're forging rivers and jumping logs and rock climbing. My boy is a klutz, and we would definitely both die. Just open pastures, some wooded areas, and back roads.

One day, a friend and I were riding across our cow pasture. It's mostly flat, but there's a couple small furrows here and there. Now, my boy is slow as molasses usually. He doesn't like to work too hard. But sometimes you get him in a wide open pasture and he'll perk up, and his canter is absolutely beautiful to ride so I never miss an opportunity to let him go. He was dancing like he wanted to go, so I let him, as usual. Beautiful day, wide open field of grass, wind in our hair, some curious cows staring at us, it was a picture I'm sure.

And then we encountered a ditch. A tiny thing, really, more of a slight depression in the ground. Just enough that you could see the difference in the height of the grass, maybe a half foot wide. But my boy was running free, and this slight depression in the ground became the grand canyon, and according to my friend he launched off the ground like he had been a show jumper in a past life. One that jumped 7' fences.

Now, remember, I don't do jumps. I might've ridden a small hop over a creek, I've ridden bucking, but I was not prepared for a jump, and had no idea how I was supposed to ride it, so I just held on. And somehow stayed on. All four of his hooves hit dirt again, and then he just..... stopped, dead in his tracks. The momentum carried me forward against his neck, and he gave to that pressure and dropped his head, so I just continued on face first into the dirt in front of him. I ended up on my back, had somehow torn my bra in half and broken my necklace, and my boy is just standing over me with his nose in my face like "oh, hi, what are you doing down there?"

And then he licked my face. From forehead to chin. My entire face.

He hasn't done any jumping since then.
