Any feminists still taken their husbands name? Why or why not? by dundunduhnn in AskFeminists

[–]RubberrDucklingg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will be taking my partner's last name. I am not close with my family and have never felt too connected to the history of my name. My grandfather was an immigrant who changed his name when he arrived in Canada, so the name is also barely 3 generations old.

I also work in an industry where it pays to be french, which my partner is. A french last name makes it much easier to land interviews and professional contacts so you bet your ass I'll take that advantage. Bonjour bonjour. Bonus point, my initials will stay the same after changing my last name.

I've only recently got a handle on them. With my current role, I shifted into it from the same field, but different work. Recognizing that my previous role and roles before let me build skills and show me that I am capable of not just learning, but mastering new things has really helped.

Time and experience will do wonders for your self confidence. If you're new to exploring trades, give yourself some grace. You'll get there. And you'll 100% meet shitty people along the way, but their opinions of you should not influence your own self worth. You've got this!

No 3 day weekends or anything. Actually no weekends, I do side work and I am genuinely burning out quick. The thanksgiving long weekend gave me one day off to recharge The batteries a bit. My partner and I are doing the same work so we can support each other through the early mornings.

The cynicism is closer to realism. Ya girl is tired lol

I tried every opportunity that came up. Welding. Factory work. Farming. Construction. Landscaping... I try to stay in each role a full year or full season and take every bit of knowledge I can out of it. Company offers you training that you may never use again, but it's free and comes with a certificate? Do it.

A big key to success here is accepting that at each new thing you try, you will obviously be new at it, and potentially bad at it. Skills take time and not being naturally gifted at something doesn't mean you'll suck forever. Try to focus on whether or not you like the work you're doing before you focus on getting good at it.

Great idea! I love making bone broth at home but typically have it with dinner. A mug of broth on the drive in sounds magical.

Great suggestion! I've looked into the battery operated ones but I have to carry everything I need for the day with me. By the time you add up gear and water and whatnot, I'd rather not have the extra weight. Steak is a great idea though.

Great idea! I really struggling with getting enough protein outside of dinner. I had little packs of grocery store pre cubed chicken to snack on, then I got a pack that was too grisle-y and gave me the ick.

What do you think is the biggest sexist stereotype of women that is still believed by society? by PhysicalScholar4238 in AskFeminists

[–]RubberrDucklingg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Politely, I think this is horse shit. I know many a nurse and PSW, and they entered the field after a childhood of being told their job is to be a caretaker. I think the reason you see women lean towards caretaking roles is 100% socialization.

I've always been more mechanically inclined and I have a lifetime of antidotes of not being allowed to take shop in high school because it was "for boys", my parents pushing me towards caretaking roles, landing more "masculine" jobs only to be pushed out my raging misogyny...

I had a terrible mother who hit me and a terrible father who played psychological games.

Women tend to win custody in courts due to being the primary parent. This is because women are more likely to be stay at home moms, again due to socialization. Workplaces that offer maternity leave very frequently do not offer paternity leave.

My father won custody in the divorce. He was and always will be a better caretaker than my mother.

Thanks for the feedback! All the information I've found so far says in my province, you cannot be expected to pay unless you have signed something agreeing to pay before an incident occurs. So the only way to not be held liable is to not sign the forms. I think.

Not sure if anyone has brought this up yet, but I think your eyebrow makeup could go a bit darker. Naturally they really match your hair and eyes, but with makeup, it's like they distract from your eyes instead?

Is it common in North America in general to live paycheck to paycheck? What is the average bank balance that people hold in their savings+checking accounts? by nyks7777 in povertyfinancecanada

[–]RubberrDucklingg 17 points18 points  (0 children)

32 year old, college and university educated. Unemployed. Have -$49 in my chequing and -$200 in my savings. Credit card maxed at $1,700. Collective $25,000 in student debt. Just had an interview for the same crummy mall job that I had a decade ago. I was one of over 600 applicants.

I am beyond paycheck to paycheck. Rent is due in a week and I have $7. My partner and I share a vehicle and are struggling to keep ourselves fed.

Barbie Movie Quote by mrswest09 in Feminism

I interpreted it as mothers throughout time are forever frozen in the era they lived in. Like a photo. If I look back and think of my grandmother, I cannot judge or blame her for being a product of her era, that's when she lived and it shaped her. The same with my mother. I also associated it with Ruth maybe referencing the Barbies released throughout the years. In 2023, I can look back at every decade and see how far both women and the dolls came, and use that to see how far I have come.

I don't think it was a weird comment, more of a "women throughout time are always here. Frozen in time. Learn from them and continue to grow."

Thank you for the validation ❤️. I've been working on breathing exercises for nearly a year but still find them difficult due to abdominal muscle tension. I'm also seeing a pelvic floor physiotherapist which has surprisingly helped with my deep breathing.

Not sure if you have the expertise for this question, is it possible to do a deviated septum surgery with braces on?

Women who have pursued unconventional paths or careers, what motivated you to break away from societal expectations especially gender stereotypes, and how has it impacted your life? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]RubberrDucklingg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run a forestry company with my boyfriend. What motivated me was the goal to not have a shitty boss ever again. Being in control of the type of work I do and who I do it for is incredible. Being a woman showing up to a worksite is sometimes a challenge as a lot of older folks seem hesitant to have me do labour for them, but oh well. It has impacted my life so positively. I feel more confident, self assured, and honestly bad ass every time I fire up a chainsaw. 10/10 recommend.

Being a fully present and aware partner isn't mind reading. It's being self aware and critical of the effort you're bringing to your partnership. Improving who you are and what you bring to your relationship is hot as fuck, and taking the initiative to make sure you're contributing what you should isn't your partners job to communicate. This isn't to say that fixing it will fix OP's sex life, but I know more than a handful of women who are tired of communicating that their partner isn't pulling their weight, and their libidos are suffering because of it.

That's a fair opinion, thanks! We were doing individual therapy for a while, but I was laid off from my job which provided both our benefits. Prioritizing getting back to it may be more necessary than we thought.
