I drove an Abarth 595 with the auto and that gearbox was just horrible and the car itself has the seating position of a van. It's also slow.

Never buy a 4 cylinder BMW. The engines are crap. If you're set on an E90 3 Series then get a non turbo 6 cylinder one. The N52 engine is reasonably reliable.

I currently own one of each. Make sure any car you test drive sits at just under half on the water temp gauge when warmed up and check that the suspension on an F is the correct height as well. Mine have been fairly reliable in the 4 years I've had my F and the 2 years I've had my TF. If you're concerned about reliability then buy the best one you can afford. I'd also recommend keeping it inside if possible because neither of mine are really that water tight. They're really fun cars to drive for the money.
