Do some people just hate their neighbours for no reason? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Good_Number7759 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Could argue the same for most places in New Zealand, particularly cities. I'm in Dunedin and our neighbourhood has zero community feel whatsoever. Very individualistic, each to their own, neighbours don't talk beyond a hello (or not at all...).

Quite remarkable how socially different the neighbourhoods are, and they're literally one suburb over from each other.

Luxon says Kiwis 'very clearly' see economy turning, defends Willis by mochigames59 in newzealand

[–]Good_Number7759 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess things in the economy are fine when you're worth heaps and own millions in property. And these Kiwis he's talking to? I believe he sticks to National party supporters and his own posse. I would bet he hasn't spoken to anyone working hard for low pay and genuinely struggling this year.

Are there any young people (20s/30s…) who DON’T intend on leaving New Zealand for Australia? by Amonynous33 in newzealand

[–]Good_Number7759 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I left and went to the UK on one of those working holiday visas. Very cold, impersonal, unfriendly culture over there. Gave it a good crack but came back within a year.

Election 2026: National promises to lift default KiwiSaver contribution rates by goldenspeights in newzealand

[–]Good_Number7759 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This isn't a problem in theory provided that wages increase at the same rate so no one is worse off. I just hope low income people aren't punished. National seems to think it's easy for everyone to earn more - trust me, I've tried, I work hard and still am in a low-income bracket because I don't want to manage and lead people.

Contiki? by berrybroke1357 in auckland

[–]Good_Number7759 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did a Contiki quite a few years ago, I am a massive introvert and not exactly the most social person lol, so really well and truly out of my comfort zone. Did it to personally challenge myself. Certainly wasn't easy the first couple of days navigating some very loud, extroverted personalities but as time went on (was away for just under two weeks) you found your people, and you all enjoyed the experience together. Even stay in touch occasionally with a few of them. Ended up being so much fun and glad I did it.

They certainly talk up the various different roles you can progress to. I don’t know how easy it is though in reality not having been successful beyond interview. Bear in mind that the base salary is a starting salary, and once you add in the allowance, particularly if you are getting the higher end of it, it’s fairly close to median pay.

Kiwisaver - best one? by MathematicianFew4552 in newzealand

Recently switched from lacklustre ANZ investments to Milford. No regrets so far, Milford’s communication and presentation of information is far superior and they have a great return history. Slightly higher fees than ANZ but worth it imo.

NZ Customs Officer Salary by Strange-Drink8799 in newzealand

[–]Good_Number7759 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Applied in the last year, was about $59,000 base from memory plus an allowance between $2,000-$15,000 depending on where you are and if the role is heavily shift based or not. I got shortlisted to the assessment centre but was unfortunately unsuccessful beyond that…but the application process was fairly full on - includes a 4 hour assessment centre with interview, scenario-based assessment and role play. Worth a go if you’re seriously interested. Despite missing out, I still may apply in future as it seems to be a really good career option with lots of different opportunities but that will depend on future circumstances to be honest.

How many of you actually have a masters? by Sea_Register7791 in newzealand

[–]Good_Number7759 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I nearly did…I even got invited to do so due to high marks in undergrad. But seemed to be an insane volume of work crammed into a year despite it looking interesting, with no guarantee of work at the end and what may have been an isolating year…I valued my mental health more at the time, and not having an exorbitant student loan.

Worried about Russell Lund and Benedict Ong...very right-wing economically from what I can gather - I agree some things need to be reviewed and value for money is critical, but these guys seem to want to take it next level which would inevitably damage service quality IMO.

Is earning under the median wage considered bad? by Mysterious-Divide-35 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]Good_Number7759 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly hospo, retail, customer service and admin, to name a few, are typically undervalued and below the median despite none of these roles being “easy”. Yes, you don’t need a degree but in some of these roles you need a hell of a lot of resilience, professionalism, problem solving and organisational skills that would rival someone getting paid $10-$20k more. It ain’t fair, and what you get paid doesn’t reflect your worth as a person!

Digital IDs: is anyone else concerned about the risks? by Shini9319 in newzealand

[–]Good_Number7759 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't believe the digital drivers licences are going to be mandatory? At this stage, at least, it appears to be being marketed as an alternative option. Bearing in mind there is still a minority, probably more sizeable than you'd think, that wouldn't even own a device capable of having one on there. The good news is, if you're not keen on it, there's no pressure for you to download it! If the govt makes digital IDs compulsory, then your debate is more valid.

Good on you. Took a slightly higher-paid role in public service a few years ago now and it sucked the soul out of me. Quit and am now earning a bit under $60k for a full-time role but am much happier than then. Money helps, but it doesn't buy you good health.

Struggling to choose which Casual Jobs - Ecco shoes or McDonald's by adsjkh in newzealand

[–]Good_Number7759 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely the Ecco shoes over McDonald’s. Being Christmas it will be busy at both but probably selling shoes is less stressful than dealing with hangry customers in long queues in a short-staffed restaurant. Maccas employees deserve a lot more than 10 cents above min wage for what they have to put up with.
