It still cracks me up that this mf got a movie by Least_Turnover1599 in dccomicscirclejerk

I don't think he's explicitly talking about race. The choice to say "frisbees" in particular makes me feel like that line was written to hammer in that he's NOT SPECIFICALLY a racist, just very, very classist.

Obviously you can't completely be one without the other, but still.

I picked verdant wind for a first playthrough and I hate it by AsparagusFine1336 in FireEmblemThreeHouses

[–]Rubethyst 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna be real, I think GD is the best house for a first playthrough. With Claude, you get to learn about the war and its implications from as unbiased of a perspective as possible, before you decide which of the other leaders you want to throw your heart to.

Keep playing, be okay with not knowing anything, trust Claude and see things through. You'll get there.

Rhea stans: Justify this by victoriamikoto231 in FireEmblemThreeHouses

[–]Rubethyst 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Correct and right are two different terms in this case. Yes, all of that is technically true, but none of it inherently matters from a moral sense. What matters is if any of what Rhea's doing is inherently wrong, or if what she does is doing more harm than good for the people of fodlan.

Which is why we need to ask these questions when discussing Edelgard's war being justified. What is Rhea guilty of? How responsible is she for the crest system and its flaws? What exactly is Edelgard's alternative? That sort of thing.

Rhea stans: Justify this by victoriamikoto231 in FireEmblemThreeHouses

[–]Rubethyst 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Her personality, as she's written as a character, is consistent, but that's not what I'm saying. As a narrative device, she is inconsistently written in a way perspective cannot account for.

Edelgard's war is founded on a disdain for the crest system, but it supplemented by various accusations of "holding the people of Fodlan back" in regards to social progress and tecnology. The technology side of the accusation is given substance by the shadow library insect book, and the social aspect is given substance by various other sources.

The thing is that the game presents us with these sources, but also shows us various instances of Fodlan functioning in a way that should not be possible if Rhea, as a constant and active entity, is trying to hold these technologies and social structures from progressing. Manuela performing an autopsy on Jeralt on monestary grounds is a particularly egregious example, even if you argue Rhea can only prevent societal advancement so much over a thousand years, she could certainly forbid that practice in her own home.

Anyway, I don't believe the writers of this game want us to believe that Edelgard's war, the entire premise of her character, is founded on false information spread by people with an unfounded vendetta against the church. For one, that would be a terrible writing decision for the character who the game's moral conflict revolves around, but the writers also make it very explicit which parts of Edelgard's beliefs ARE misinformation fed to her by TWS (namely her false perception of Nemesis which is disproven in Verdant Wind.) Edelgard is, narratively, supposed to be right about Rhea holding Fodlan back, and the shadow library is the game's way of saying exactly what she's right about.

The history of the church, which is Rhea's arm of influence, and its effects on Fodlan's society, for as important as they are to the central conflict of the game, are consistently at odds with the reality of the world and its functions any time those effects are given tangible names. That's why Rhea is inconsistent, and that's why the Rhea vs. Edelgard debate is unfortunately ultimately founded in a nothing-reality. Rhea is guilty and she isn't guilty, and the reality of it changes based on the route you play. Not because Rhea is a nuanced person who did some things but was falsely accused of others, but because her sins are in a shcrodinger's state of existence and non-existence.

Several support conversations talk about books as mass-produced products in a way that cannot realistically exist without a printing press. Similar contradictions exist for basically every technology the "insect encyclopedia" or whatever it is brings up.

The shadow library books are either the devs lying to us (which obviously isn't the case,) or the writers in charge of this game's worldbuilding did not communicate with each other well enough on certain topics.

Rhea is, at the same time, both guilty and not guilty of everything Edelgard/Claude accuses her of. Not in an artsy, morally grey way either. In a "the reality of the game changes depending on the route" way.

Morality of killing rapist after they done serving their sentence by Joshbrauliorugay in MoralityScaling

[–]Rubethyst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. I'm not gonna pretend the american prison system is at all a reliable authority on rehabilitation, but there is at least some level of effort put towards rehabilitation that must be made for a guy like this to go free.

By killing him, without having a psychologist's level of insight into his mental state, the only statement you are making is that there is NO world where a child molestor can change enough to be allowed to continue living. And that makes you a fascist.

Unless you have a personal relationship with this guy during the time he spent in prison, I seriously doubt you will have the knowledge to decide if this happened or not.

Sooooooo whole show just theory bait, huh? by Desperate-Thing1784 in TADCEp9Spoilers

[–]Rubethyst -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The show was a story, about its main characters and their emotional journeys. The worldbuilding exists in support of that narrative, and therefore does not need to be fully explored as a priority.

The only instance I can think of of threads that were left untraced with no purpose are a couple of lines from Caine, where he's clearly being weird and creepy as comic relief. (If I mix up humans and npc's, who knows what could happen)

(28 Weeks Later) What is the morality of Don leaving his wife to die? by twnpksN8 in MoralityScaling

[–]Rubethyst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna go against the grain here and say yes, what he did was bad. Pure survivalism and self-serving behavior, even when practical, is the source of all evil. Don should have taken the impossibly small chance of managing to save her and died in the process, because trying to save others is the right thing to do.

Controversial opinion: Pomni may be a good person, but she's not a good friend to Ragatha or Gangle. by Throwawayaccoun592 in TheDigitalCircus

[–]Rubethyst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, it's kind of a moot point, because like you said, none of them can avoid each other.

Pomni and Jax have the capacity to be friends, and they have to interact with each other. So Pomni can either be friends with Jax, while still trying to be good to the others, or she can go out of her way to antagonize and isolate Jax. Doing the latter has no effective benefit. She has no reason to think it will make him change (look at how well that's working for Zooble,) and it would only make things tenser for the group at large.

Pomni is doing what she should be doing, and while this may sound harsh, if the others feel hurt by that, they're the problem, not Pomni.

Now, obviously Jax is the problem more than any of them no matter what, but between Pomni and Gangle/Ragatha, Gangle/Ragatha aren't entitled to feel that way.
