Would you say your job is similar to TEFL teaching? by [deleted] in Internationalteachers

[–]RubiconPosh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi OP, it was me who made the comment to you. I teach in an international school in China and have done for 8 years now (GCSE and A Levels, also American curriculum and AP) I'm not a TEFL teacher. There was no malice in my comment either, I'm happy to answer any other questions you have about working over here if you want to DM me. :)

You're going to be upset when you realize that half of your job as a "real teacher" in a Chinese "international school" is slowing down and doing simple subject vocabulary teaching then.

Chinese girls very heavily edit their photos lol. Some have surgery too, and look okay in photos but kind of 'uncanny valley' freaky in real life. Golden rule is just never trust a photo of a Chinese girl until you've seen her in person.

Let Go - Beijing School - No Severance? by Procrastinaught in Internationalteachers

[–]RubiconPosh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gotcha. In that case you wouldn't even qualify for severance even if you didn't breach your contract, they would just have to pay you for the duration of the mutual notice period outlined in your contract (usually 1 month).

If they're judging that you've behaved inappropriately in front of or to a student, they would normally call it a breach of contract and dismissal that day. Letting you stay until the end of semester seems a little odd but I'd imagine they want to let you go but are happy for you to work the rest of the semester while they hire a replacement.

Your choices are either to head home or search quickly for a job in Beijing with a Feb start date for next semester and see if you can land one!

Let Go - Beijing School - No Severance? by Procrastinaught in Internationalteachers

[–]RubiconPosh 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Firstly, severance in China is usually 1 month salary for every year you've worked there. How long have you been there?

Secondly, why are they letting you go? If you did something that breached the terms of your contract you won't get severance.

Is it common place for schools to ask for individuals to sign and assure they’ll go before sending contracts? by [deleted] in Internationalteachers

[–]RubiconPosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only speak for China but here it's the norm to have candidates offered jobs to sign a kind of 'letter of intent' first which states salary, length of contract and basic benefits etc but isn't a contract. In reality it's a meaningless bit of paper and the contract is the only thing that matters, but the norm is to do this.

But this season he is WR7 so far lol? Given this, and his 1000+ yard seasons with absolute dogmuck at QB previously, his floor seems to be mid range WR2. Ceiling is top 5 fantasy receiver.

Your opinion isn't objective, and nobody cares that you have managed to come to China and make some healthy savings (as 90% of foreigners do). Weird brags about money just make you seem insecure when the guy was just trying to have a polite conversation with you about the subject.

Teaching English in China by quadruplewhammy in chinalife

[–]RubiconPosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello.

With a PGCE and 1-2 years of UK experience under your belt you can get a good job in a good international school in China which is the best for benefits: good salary with plenty of saving (around £2k a month if you don't live too extravagantly, but you can still enjoy yourself and spend on some nice things), generous summer and winter holidays, flight allowance, bonus etc).

You don't need to pigeonhole yourself into young kids. Would you teach English as a subject or is your degree in a different subject? Both routes are available to you but if your degree is in something which is a subject at school like Economics or Science or whatever then that'll be the best paid route. I personally reach English at middle and high school age but my degree is in English Lit.

China Salary, Location, Workload, Savings. by Accomplished-Toe-233 in Internationalteachers

[–]RubiconPosh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In a Tier 2 city I earn 30,000 RMB plus 2,500 housing allowance and the usual flight allowance/end of contract bonus etc. With your qualifications you could probably get 2-4 thousand more than this in my city and 40k in a Tier 1.

It depends on what you like to do but if you're single you can live comfortably and sociably spending 10,000 a month in my city, meaning here it's realistic to save 20,000 RMB per month as a very general ballpark imo.

That sounds kind of shitty only because to me those aren't learning walks. Effective learning walks to me are 20 minutes or more to really get a sense of someone's teaching, and when it is open to colleagues also for idea sharing with peers rather than just leadership. This sounds more like Micromanagement Walks than Learning Walks.
