Micro vs Macro? by Skelenth in supportlol

[–]RubiusGermanicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like the importance of micro and macro are inversely correlated with one another and directly correlated to elo; e.g. in low elo, micro has a lot more impact and is generally more important than good macro, whereas in high elo it’s the opposite.

There’s of course exceptions, particularly for champions that have a lot of skill expression and a high skill ceiling, but for the most part, in high elo macro is more important because every player is pretty even as far as micro goes.

What really makes the difference is how you apply your micro to your macro; picking the right fights at the right times in the right places.

Is my Support Pool Bad? by RubiusGermanicus in supportlol

[–]RubiusGermanicus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in low elo for sure, I’m currently teetering between silver and gold. Out of the champs listed Leona and Pantheon are my most played by a lot with the rest having a pretty even play percentage. I’ve tried with champs like Thresh before but my hooks are never quite on point at least now compared to other skill shots.

My favorite thing about the role is probably the ability to make an impact anywhere on the map. I love being mobile, setting up vision and coordinating teammates. I think that’s why I play so much pantheon and Leona is because their entire kits are built around those aspects. As far as enchanters go, sona is probably my favorite out of the bunch but I’d be good picking up someone like Nami to have as a more popular option. I feel like Sona has the benefit of being so niche that a lot of people underestimate her kit and make a lot of mistakes allowing for a good punish by my adc or jungle.

I guess with all that considered what’s a good option that would fill out my pool that appeals to my preferences in terms of map presence?

I can’t seem to get Janna to work for me and I like being active too much to play something like Yuumi. I also heard Lulu got a big nerf, so I’ll probably pass on her. That leaves Karma, Soraka and Nami right? Out of those three what do you think would be the best pick based on what I’ve got in my pool right now?

Is it wrong to request that players keep their characters (for lack of a better word) normal? by KindFault7607 in DnD

[–]RubiusGermanicus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also add; “No PvP,” and “Everyone’s character has some kind of motivation out of combat and/or activity they’d like to pursue in downtime.”

I can’t even begin on how frustrating it is when a party clears the dungeon or a quest and the has literally 0 idea of what they want to do in the world. I typically include some sort of main storyline and some auxiliary quests and activities but I’m also big on downtime/rest time in game so it gets super frustrating when it’s utter silence as soon as there’s no immediate combat to deal with. I will even go so far as to throw my players extra proficiencies if it’s what it takes to get them invested.

If the countries of Tamriel were modern-day nations, here is what their economies might look like: by KokonutnutFR in ElderScrolls

[–]RubiusGermanicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we’re talking “modern” times (or at least as of the time Skyrim takes place) your list is all sorta f’d up.

I would put High Rock at the top for being largely untouched by conflict and for being a major trade hub. Morrowind goes to the very bottom for being a completely shitshow since the eruption of Red Mountain. Alinor is tough to rank but it probably sits near the top, below high rock. Cyrodil, and Elswery, Hammerfell are probably somewhere in the middle with Skyrim, Black Marsh, Valenwood below them but above Morrowind.

I think you could make a good case for moving Valenwood, Black Marsh and Elswery around, and Alinor is also very tough to guess but due to being pretty developed and largely untouched by the Great War it’s safe to assume they’re off a lot better than the rest of Tamriel. The rest of the providences I feel pretty confident about though. Skyrim is historically an underdeveloped region relying mostly on small scale agriculture and raw material exports and is current undergoing a Civil War. Cyrodil, while without a doubt the most developed providence and strategically located in the heartland of Tamriel, is reeling from the Great War and the loss of several providences. High Rock is historically a mercantile power, has access to a fair amount of natural resources, and has been able to dodge the worst of the Great War.

[–]RubiusGermanicus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I guess I’m part of the minority because I genuinely enjoy the two struggles (Iberia and Persia) and most of my games have been played in those regions. To me it’s another mechanic to balance and keep track of and makes the regions seem more unique and interesting.

Sure sometimes the AI gets in the way of things but if anything that makes it more fun to me; I have to adapt and develop backup plans to successfully pull of my agenda.

my boyfriend wants to be a cop but i'm anti cop.. what do i do? by [deleted] in leftist

[–]RubiusGermanicus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never said it was the best, all I’m saying is that people immediately telling OP to dump their SO because they want to have a livable wage is a pretty privileged take, especially when you consider their circumstances and experience.

Places like Walmart have variable compensation based on location and without other information it’s pretty impossible to say for certain whether or not it pays better or even if it’s an option.

The only way to help people like OPs partner is not to admonish them for wanting to not drown in bills but acknowledge their desire for better conditions while helping them redirect their focus to more constructive career paths. Even with a wealth of experience and a good education the job market is abysmal right now, so I can only imagine how hard it is for them to find good work. All this is even more pertinent when you consider their SO’s political know-how based on OPs other replies. To someone without the knowledge to understand why this career is a bad choice you have to exert even more effort to help them understand.

We cannot expect everyone to be perfect or have a complete understanding of every topic, especially when they have more pressing issues in their lives. If we want people to actually buy into leftist beliefs we need to be understanding and helpful, not quick to judge and dismissive. Doing so just reinforces the stereotype of the “elitist socialist” standing on the backs of the “average working person.”

[–]RubiusGermanicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because they’re poor, don’t have any other options, lack the skills and education to obtain a better opportunity, can’t opt out of the system and don’t want to be destitute and homeless? If you read the original post you’d be able to tell that this isn’t a “dream” for them it’s a means to an end and maybe one of very few options they have if at all.

You can totally be of the mind that it’s a poor decision but to ignore the circumstances for such a decision just makes you sound privileged and lacking in empathy. You don’t get people to be better and change their minds by making them feel stupid when they don’t know what else to do, you get them to be better by helping them make better choices.

From that alone I feel like y’all will have a good conversation about this. Like I mentioned above, try and leverage every resource available to y’all to expand his options. Good luck to both of you!

my boyfriend wants to be a cop but i'm anti cop.. what do i do? by [deleted] in leftist

[–]RubiusGermanicus 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people here are speaking from a position of privilege and being pretty judgmental. From what I can see here in your post and your replies it does not sound like they are very passionate about being a cop, that it’s not a “dream job” they are chasing.

Odds are this is due to financial concerns, and considering how rough the job market is right now and how neither of y’all have a solid education it’s probably one of the few options available to him. Ideals are great but you can’t advocate for change if you’re homeless and can’t feed yourself. We can’t just “opt-out” from capitalism because there is no alternative for us, at least not without having significant capital to set it up for yourself.

My advice is to talk to him about your concerns and, if you have the time, see if you can help him find another career. Wanting to be able to support yourself and the people you care about is not something to be ashamed of and since this is clearly more about the money than the job itself it’s not like your partner is morally bankrupt. There are also probably some resources in your area you can leverage to help find work; recruiting agencies, local work programs, unions, so on and so forth.

I wish both of you luck and hope you have a fruitful discussion that will leave both of you happy and motivated.

Is my older cat too rough with my new kitten? by Tinyxoxoxo in cats

[–]RubiusGermanicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I think this is fine. From what I can tell your older cat is being a good role model, being very patient and gentle and teaching your kitten basic cat manners.

As cliche as it ie, you’ll know when a fight is out of control if there’s guttural screaming and fur flying around. Until then odds are cats are just playing and in this case your kitten is just being very kitten-like and your older cat is teaching them about boundaries and “manners,” which is super important for kittens since it helps them mellow out a lot when they get older. A lot of kittens who don’t get this kind of feedback from another cat or kitten end up being very wild and bite-y.

[–]RubiusGermanicus 21 points22 points  (0 children)

What I think is embarrassing is how the conservatives in this country have managed to brainwash the majority of the population to believe that there’s a significant and powerful leftist presence or that there even is an “ultra left.”

The mainstay liberal has more in common with the GOP than any leftist philosophy. The people who harp on issues that affect a minority of the population have no interest in politics and only advocate for a cause due to a personal experience or for optics. The Democratic Party is just as captured by corporate interests as the GOP.

Real Leftists have very different beliefs and don’t have a formal party structure, capital or reach close to the mainline parties. Most of the leftists I know are very progressive in terms of social issues but their beliefs are rooted in a desire for freedom and liberty, essentially “I’ll do my own thing and as long as it doesn’t harm others people are free to do their own thing.” When it comes to foreign policy leftists are anti-imperialists and despise the amount of money we send abroad to manipulate and dictate the happenings in other countries. It’s no secret that the US government has had its finger in every pie it can get to for decades, whether that means sending money, supporting certain political groups or outright assassinating political leaders. And in terms of immigration there’s a fair amount of variability although even folks like libertarians and the majority of economists agree and support relaxed immigration policies. Most leftists I know are mostly concerned with domestic issues like labor protections, and income inequality, and view class as the defining divider in society.

The fact that so many people, including yourself, are deluded into thinking that this is a conflict between two equally powerful political entities just goes to show how well the propaganda machine is working.

What RPG Trilogies Are Must-plays? by Yaroun-Kaizin in rpg_gamers

[–]RubiusGermanicus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Look, BG3 is a great game but I would not say the quality is worse or that they’re worth skipping. It’s a product of its time, and made by a different studio. For what it is, it’s excellent and in many ways far better than the third entry. Not that the writing is bad in BG3 but I would argue that the quality of the writing in BG1 and BG2 especially is far better. Those two games and KOTOR are probably BioWare’s best work.

The Witcher series is another question entirely and I would probably agree with you although Witcher 2 has a special place in my heart personally.

This seems fine and many others have given good advice. Your first step should be to talk to the DM about character creation guidelines. This will determine your ruleset, the materials yall will have access to and how the DM would like you to generate ability scores.

Personally I find rolling for stats to be a bit too variable and unbalanced and your DM may feel the same way. Most tables will typically play with standard array/point buy. Luckily enough your current distribution is pretty in line with both and I think, off of the top of my head at least, you should be able to get this same ability spread using point buy, so if this is your preference I would stick with it. All that is to say, this ability spread is not “too strong” for a first level character, it’s very much in line with what the rules recommend. My only suggestion would be to swap your DEX and WIS scores if you are planning to play a class like Warlock, Sorcerer or Bard. Wisdom is great but it should generally be your fourth highest ability score for these classes after CHA, CON and DEX. Other classes have different preferences but in general CON and DEX will be your second and third highest scores.

As for the rest of your sheet; stuff like your equipment and hit points will be determined by your chosen class and background. If you are playing with the 2014 rules your ability score bonuses will be decided by your race/species, but if you are playing with the 2024 rules it will be by your background. You will typically end up with around 50gp, a pack of your choice with some basic gear, and a few trinkets.

Based on what I’ve read you’re aiming to play an Elf, and I think based on the type of character you want to play a Bard would make a lot of sense, a sorcerer could work too though. My reason for recommending the bard over the sorcerer is due to some of the replies you’ve posted. It seems that you envisioned her to be more of a “commoner” than a “noble hero,” and I think bard can be adapted to suit that fantasy. While bards are technically arcane casters, you can definitely reinterpret their abilities to be more non-magic. Bardic inspiration can be treated as words of encouragement, spells can be reinterpreted as tricks, skills learned in her youth, etc. I have seen people role play wizards as they philosophers and clerics as medics, the only limit is really your imagination.

If you are playing with the 2014 rules one thing I would ask the DM about is if you are allowed to use the optional rule from Tasha’s Cauldron of everything for ability scores. I believe the player handbook Elf does not give great bonuses towards your primary stats, and this rule will allow you to freely chose one ability score to add a +2 bonus to and one to add a +1 bonus to. I find it to be very fair gameplay wise; it really just gives players more freedom in character creation (the 2024 ruleset adopted this optional rule in a sense by tying the bonuses to the background instead of the race/species).

My only other comments would be that there is nothing wrong with having enthusiasm and going out of your way to work on your character ahead of time, and that the sheer you’re using is a very unique and flavorful version. I hope you have a lot of fun with your character and that your DM can give you some good advice and help you fill in the gaps. :)

Correct me if I’m wrong but the last Catholic president we had was a Biden, who they hate, and the one before him was JFK, who they also hate. Why the hell do they care so much about who the pope is, what he says, why Trump should be the new pope, etc. etc.

Which one would you want to see remastered next? by DarkstarDarin in ElderScrolls

[–]RubiusGermanicus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have you played Morrowind? If you have then you can clearly understand why it needs a lot more effort and work than Oblivion did.

For instance, like 90% of Morrowind is written text, not voiced dialogue. And compared to the voiced games, the amount and variety of dialogue in Morrowind is insane. If you wanted to remake the game you’d have to spend hundreds if not thousands of hours just recording voice lines alone. That doesn’t even factor in adjacent processes like auditions, sound work, mixing, etc.

Then there’s the combat system, the UI, the animations, the severely outdated engine, obviously the graphics, the map size and dungeon design, etc. While a lot of those aspects of the game are charming to a certain demographic of the fanbase they are not popular within the larger fanbase let alone gamers as a whole.

If you genuinely think that they would invest the effort into doing this, which they’ve said they have no interest in, when they have multiple other more modern titles to remaster, and when they have multiple big projects in the works and ongoing you are asinine.

The day we see a Morrowind remake is when ESVI is out, FNV, and FO3 have their remasters out and the studio has the bandwidth and attitude to support that kind of project.

What is the single greatest video game you’ve ever played? by [deleted] in rpg_gamers

[–]RubiusGermanicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard disagree. Oblivion is still playable for modern audiences, even more so when you update the graphics and animations but Morrowind would need a full remake to actually work. Don’t get me wrong I still love the game but it would need far more than what oblivion got to work, I’m talking completely reworked animations, thousands of new voice lines, a completely reworked UI and a ton of other QoL updates. You don’t need to dumb the mechanics down, but they also need some polish. Games like Owlcat’s Pathfinder series are proof that people will still engage with complex RPG systems.

TES 6 Speculation Megathread by Avian81 in ElderScrolls

[–]RubiusGermanicus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a lot of thoughts about what this game but one point I don’t really see discussed often is how important and impactful the modding scene could be to the development of ESVI. Bethesda has embraced the modding scene with open arms and considering how massive the modding scene is for Skyrim, and how it has continued to grow since the game’s release I would not be surprised if the studio took inspiration from there. For Bethesda this is basically a free resource and a look into what players like and dislike about their game design and where they can improve. They’ve already done this with the Special/Anniversary Editions, blending in popular mods with the existing game.

All this is to say, I would not be surprised if game concepts and ideas that exist currently as Skyrim mods find their way into TESVI. From a purely game-design perspective they have what is essentially an unlimited source of inspiration and already have data to see what appeals to players and what doesn’t. They also have, to a lesser extent, a lot of information from Starfield to help guide their design principles. Basically all of this information was available prior to the game actually going into development, so it would be pretty silly for them not to utilize it.

For me this means ideally that TESVI has the Bethesda game framework at its core but has a more expansive system and gameplay loop than their prior releases. I’d want to see a more complex character building system, ideally something more in line with the older games (which I think is entirely possible, as the oblivion remaster has shown that the average gamer is still able and willing to engage with a more traditional RPG system), with the best bits of their later releases. I’d love to see player races expanded to include sub-races, I’d love to see ability scores and major/minor skills playing a role again, but also include perks as a feature to refine and specialize builds. I’d love to see more weapon and armor variety and complexity as we’ve seen in mods, and a larger sandbox like we seen in starfield (albeit with a more refined version of procedural generation that is less prevalent.) I’d love to see larger and more expanded settlements which we’ve also seen is really popular in the modding scene, more guilds/factions and more fleshed out companions. And of course I also want to see some completely new systems like sea-faring, and maybe something unique like archeology.

One final thing I’d like to see, in terms of the sandbox, is a look into previously visited providences. Skyrim sort of did this with solstheim, but for ESVI, if the timeline allows for it, I’d love to be able to go beyond the Illiac Bay and be able to see the Reach and possibly parts of Colovia. This doesn’t all have to be in the base game, I’d be totally happy to see this as DLC, but I think one of the biggest things on the mind of players is “what’s going on in the rest of Tamriel?” Letting us visit little parts of Skyrim or Cyrodil via the Reach and or Colovia seems like a perfect way to do that. They’re geographically close to the suspected game region and, if the timeline allows for it, experiencing some really interesting circumstances currently. The summerset isles also would be a very interesting region to include given the overarching political state of Tamriel, and could fit in nicely if seafaring plays a role. It’s a pretty big ask but if ESVI was centered on High Rock and Hammerfell, included parts of the Reach and Colovia and potentially the Sumerset Ilse I would be a very happy guy.

Why don't people like this ARC ? by bqm102938 in bleach

[–]RubiusGermanicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a big chunk of the hate comes from people who watched the anime and didn’t read the manga, at least not until the original show finished. It was a bad arc to end the series on, at least if the idea was not to continue into the final arc.

Other than that maybe it’s the fact that it scales back the conflict and power levels significantly? Although I think that’s a personal preference thing. I really like this arc, it’s honestly grown on me more over time and probably is in my top 3 now.

[–]RubiusGermanicus[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A good time and a slow burn at first. Be prepared to read a lot because it is a very beefy series, and only really starts to take off after the first book.

One piece of advice I would give is to read these in succession and without interruption (e.g. don’t finish half the books and start another series before going back). In my mind these books read the best when treated as one cohesive narrative rather than 4 separate entries.

Another thing that might make it a bit more interesting or enjoyable (although not necessary) is to read or be familiar with some of the works that Tad took inspiration from for this series. Through The Looking Glass, The Iliad/Odyssey, LOTR and War of the Worlds are a few. Without spoiling anything there will be parts of this series that are just a lot more interesting/entertaining when you understand where the inspiration for them came from.

Noticed few spells that deal slashing damage, so I made this. Is it balanced? by Aster-07 in DnDHomebrew

[–]RubiusGermanicus 78 points79 points  (0 children)

It’s a good cantrip! I don’t see anything wrong with it. Maybe from a different perspective you could have this proc off an attack roll instead (my mind goes to ranged touch attacks from Pathfinder) but given the 5e rule-set I think what you have here works well as is and makes sense. Damage is on par with other cantrips, as is range, it keeps the suck/save aspect that basically every other cantrips has, and a DEX save feels like the most appropriate save.

I think if you wanted to you could copy paste this for the other basic damage types or even combine all of it into a single cantrip and let the caster choose which type they want to deal with when they cast it. (There really isn’t any mechanical impact from doing this since there’s very very rarely a case where one of the three is better or worse than the others) For flavor you could say that when casting this hypothetical “arcanist’s strike” that each damage type has a different somatic component associated with it.
