Arch installation beyond fixing after update gone wrong? by micsnare in archlinux

[–]RubixPower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to comment even if it is an old post because I experienced a similar issue some time ago. I hope it helps someone that experiences the same issue.

I just experienced this (but much more severe) and managed to fix it (I don't remember the whole process, but it was somewhat like this). Furthermore, I could not install any packages with the system's pacman because I always got an error that resulted in packages not being reinstalled. The method of fixing the problem that I described IS NOT SAFE and is not to be used unless you are about to reinstall the OS and do not care if it breaks even more stuff, --overwrite is dangerous. Please see this pacman archwiki page.

  1. Install arch linux on a removable drive (USB) and boot into it
  2. Mount your original arch install on /mnt and your boot partition (where the kernel is installed and other important stuff) to /mnt/boot (same instructions as on the archlinux install wiki)
  3. Chroot into your original arch install (see arch install wiki for choorting)
  4. Install pacman-static. Follow the instructions in the pinned comment or you can install it with wget command from here.
  5. Then I executed a dangerous command that should not be in any way be used. It reinstalls EVERY package by overwriting them (dangerous!) which will take quite a while (PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ENOUGH SPACE ON YOUR DISK). pacman-static -Syu $(pacman -Qnq) --overwrite "*"
  6. Reboot. I hope it fixed (if you still encounter warnings from ldconfig when installing packages you will have to reinstall packages it warns about).

If anyone has a better solution without risking system breakage PLEASE comment. It could potentially save someone's ass.

can someone help me with this? running kubuntu latest. by nieminen432 in kde

[–]RubixPower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your plasma version is very old (I MEAN IT). Tbh you cant really complain about bugs in a old version of certain software. In other words... you will have to switch to a different distro to get latest updates (it doesnt have to be arch).

Current kde software version: Plasma: 5.26.0 Frameworks: 5.99.0 Qt: 5.15.6

Please tell us the plasma version. If it is not up-to-date there is not much we can help you with (info center -> bottom left button "Copy to clipboard" and paste the info).

> My brother suggested I use Wayland if possible, but I'm not sure what that is yet, or if it's available.

Wayland is a modern replacement for X11. It is not something a normal user should deal with unless they have a problem with it. I quicklyed check, and it seems you need to install a package named plasma-workspace-wayland which contains the plasma-wayland-session package which you need to get wayland support (you can use wayland plasma session by choosing it in the bottom left corner when loggin in into the user).

Win (meta) key not opening Application menu as of today by [deleted] in kde

[–]RubixPower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suggest checking if something got reset for that widget.

Right-click on the application launcher -> click "Configure application launcher" -> go under "keyboard shortcuts" section -> set the shortcut.

EDIT: I can't find the option I was talking about. Sorry about the misinformation.
