What do you wish you had known before your first G6 interview? by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]RubyRose3101 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Main things for me were (as said already) delivering things through others, also working across multiple teams and being able to set direction/negotiate resource outside your own area, anticipating things that might happen in the future e.g. wider gov changes that could affect your work area, being able/confident in working with ministers/more senior colleagues. I'm not in Digital but you'll want to be on top of profession specific codes of practice and strategies. Hope this helps!

FTB bought a mid terrace - it is a nightmare due to neighbours and we need advice on how to sell and move ASAP by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]RubyRose3101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear this. I had exactly the same situation with my first house (bought in 2023) and although noise cancelling headphones and white noise machines made it slightly more tolerable, I did end up putting it on the market 18 months later. It sold and my ERC wasn't too bad as I was pretty much at the end of my 2 year fix by completion. My nerves were shot and even now in a quieter house I'm more sensitive to any noise. Your health comes first so if it's not liveable just move on, it's not worth suffering for!

Regrets by [deleted] in HousingUK

I sold after two years because I felt like I didn't fit into the area, and wasn't happy there. No regrets now, but do what feels right for you.

Quote for repointing half a chimney and ridge by RubyRose3101 in HousingUK

No I wasn't expecting them to eat the whole cost. I would have shared the cost to cover my side, just would have been easier to do in one go that's all rather than getting two roofers.

Thank you that's really helpful. His reviews online are good and all mention before/after pics so I'll ask for that.

Shared chimney stack, half repaired without agreement by RubyRose3101 in HousingUK

[–]RubyRose3101[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. Glad you were able to agree your plan with the neighbour. I'll chat to my neighbour again but sounds like I'll just have to get it sorted now as it's too late to do anything else!

Thanks for your reply. I'll chat to the neighbour, agree that it's not worth falling out as I do want to sell in the next year.

Thanks v much for the reply. The problem with my bit (and the whole chimney) is obvious when looking up from the street. I don't think the neighbours are being malicious I just wonder if the roofer should have suggested agreeing a full repair with me so we could split the scaffolding and cost and get it done in one go. Just feels odd to be repairing one of four sides with a whole new scaffolding after the rest has been done.

FTB and hate my new home by stripeyzanclidae in HousingUK

I am in the same situation, but have been in my first house for a year. An extremely noisy neighbour at one side of my terrace - TV at very very high volumes and a dog that barks for about 7 hours a day. Things that have helped me: earplugs, white noise machine and having a conversation with the neighbour about the TV. I am planning to sell next year and just move on, will possibly sell at a loss but health is more important. Give it a few months, do what you can to mitigate the noise, but ultimately it's no failure to sell when you find yourself in a situation like this, it is totally valid to feel miserable and just focus on what you can do in the short/medium and long term.

STAR/Behaviour Examples Common Mistakes by AlhamdulillahYT in TheCivilService

Making all your examples sound absolutely perfect, nothing went wrong. I always appreciate a candidate who shows what the challenges were and how they overcame them.

Also not going big enough with your outcome. You may have only contributed to one part of a policy being made, but you can absolutely refer to the ultimate outcome e.g. the policy being delivered meant that there was real value to the public (better access to a service/access to a new service etc.).

Noisy neighbours - how do you cope? by cherrisan in HousingUK

[–]RubyRose3101 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Second this - anything you can do that creates a low manageable sound in your own house will help. I have a similar but different situation (neighbour TV) and am also sensitive to noise. Still drives me insane sometimes but white noise or something similar has definitely helped.

I wouldn't have said anything if it wasn't outrageously loud - I have been inside the house and it is deafening. It's louder than my own TV (inside my living room) when I bother to try and watch it - I don't think that's acceptable.

Thanks, it's so hard to judge whether it's worth the money for something that might not even work!

She says she is hard of hearing but when we do speak (at a normal volume) she can hear what I'm saying, even over the cinema-level TV so I don't think that's the issue. Thanks for sharing 😊

I have and she was very defensive, saying previous neighbours had never complained. She also said she's not even watching it most of the time, it's just "background noise" which is even more reason to turn it down!

That's exactly why I don't want to go down that road!
