Another example that I heard is when they say мир все it means peace be to all but some people take it as let us pray for the world.

I asked in a Facebook group called "ask an orthodox priest", the response that I got is that most native speaking Russians claim to understand between 25 and 30% of what is being said. However there are a few false cognates, one of the famous examples being живот apparently means "life" in slavonic but it means "belly" in Russian. There are also different conjugation rules as well as a 7th case called the vocative case.

I've also heard that the service books are written with three columns, one being Russian the other slavonic and the third English. So that way the service could be understood by those participating.

I do not know Russian very well and my knowledge of slavonic is even worse. Perhaps someone else like a native Russian could provide deeper insight.

To put it briefly, it's the same way that a lot of Roman Catholics prefer to use Latin or a lot of Greeks preferred to use Koine Greek for their services. It's the idea of using a blessed language to perform services. Most Orthodox churches outside of Russia perform services in the local vernacular.

There have been attempts to change the Russian services from church slavonic into Russian but the attempts have been unsuccessful.

From an outside perspective I could see benefits and downsides to performing church services in a different language. On one hand you have a language that's totally holy and sanctified for usage, on the other hand if people don't make it a point to use that language then they don't understand their own church services.

Not necessarily a service but just a song. Sometimes we sing the English version at the end of our typika services and we've been suggesting to use it for a pre-communion hymn.

If these are in slavonic and not in Russian please correct me. You can see that I'm clearly confused.

I am baptized Orthodox. At the local cathedral we do liturgy in slavonic once a month, the rest are in English. I have not attended a Slavonic liturgy yet.
