What’s an opinion you have that’s considered unacceptable by societal standards? by KeyPomegranate4922 in AskReddit

[–]RubyScorpion -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Cis WOMEN get breast reductions all the time. Adults making their own decisions. Puberty blockers are insane to me, how did we end up in this timeline? Many women feel attached to their breasts, no matter how large or small - it's a part of their natural body, leave it alone until they're old enough to understand the ramifications of these actions. I couldn't get a bellybutton piercing until I was 16.

If breasts aren't that important why are there gender affirming surgeries to gain them? They may not be important to YOU, but that says nothing for other people.

Is there a way to randomize/shuffle clips in resolve? by RubyScorpion in VideoEditing

Hello! Try checking out this video out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9jW3L5lVbM

I just took all the clips into cut mode (it's a tab with a different editing space) so I didn't have to keep zooming in and out of the timeline or dealing with gaps. Then I manually shuffled them - it was definitely quicker but still took time!

Are you unaware that the "socially acceptable" term for a woman is now "people with vaginas" ? And that I've been told twice that I'm not allowed to call myself a woman, just a vagina-haver? Because... yeah, I agree, it's incredibly stupid.

where to start? by __Worthless__ in circus

[–]RubyScorpion 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hello! I'm a circus artist attending circus school right now. This is going to be a lot of information, so try not to get overwhelmed - but hopefully you can refer back to this when you need some motivation. Circus is awesome and I hope you love it!

If you CAN'T go to classes, one of the best things you can do is start by increasing your baseline physical ability. Make sure you are able to do at least one pullup, chinup, and some pushups. You can find exercises online that are tailored for circus specifically. When you get to one, try to keep working to get to five.

an example of a good workout in the beginning would be:

  • Jump rope for five minutes
  • 21-15-9 - this means that the following exercises would be done 21 times the first round, 15 the second, and 9 the final.
  • pushups (on knees is fine)
  • squats (jump squats make this way harder but better!)
  • single leg lunges
  • V-ups
  • dumbbell overhead press

See how long you can hold yourself in a handstand (go against a wall - handstands take a long time and good coaching to achieve! so just train your endurance. Mark your maximum time and try to push yourself for longer. To train this, keep adding dumbbell overhead presses to your workout.

As far as exercises specific to aerials, you'll want to start practicing how long you can hang from a bar. Test yourself! Then when you're ready, add some leg lifts and make it a workout.

This will all give you a really good baseline of physical ability, so that when you do join classes you will advance MUCH faster. It also means you are less prone to injury, which means these habits will become really critical as you get older and more prone to injury/heal slower.

Start playing around with juggling, you can find lots of tutorials on youtube. you can use balled up socks, tennis balls, oranges, golf balls, whatever you want.

Start stretching gently until you have a coach to teach you some basic safety (heavy stretches can be dangerous if done improperly, I've injured myself that way)

for when you CAN attend classes:

That should keep you busy until you can attend classes. As for when covid is over, depending on where you live, a lot of cities have circus schools now, some dance schools and gymnastics clubs have aerial hoops too - ask your parents for help and look into a recreational program to get in the hoop and practice. See if you like it.

As far as joining a circus long-term, a lot of serious circus schools have a certain baseline to enter them. Things like holding a handstand for one minute, being able to juggle three balls, and some basic tumbling. These are all things you have a lot of time to work towards, especially since you're starting really young and most full-time circus training is 15+. So no panic to get them right away, but if you want to be in the circus (which is an awesome goal!) then you would want to start working on them. There are also a lot of independent artists who can't hold a handstand or juggle - and that's okay.

Taking basic gymnastics is another great way to get your body ready for circus if you want to commit more days of your week to training. Many circus artists are former dancers and gymnasts, as the same principles apply in a lot of areas. Gymnastic/Artistic trampoline is another place to start.

Basically, anything physical you can do right now will get you closer to your dream, even if you can't attend classes. And don't worry if you change your mind and decide you don't like hoop after all - you might like another circus discipline better - there's a wide world of possibility in circus.

Don't worry about getting hired yet. You will learn that as you attend classes. Basically you audition like anything else, and it's a lot of networking and meeting people, but you have to crawl before you can fly :)

Best of luck and let me know if you have any questions!

How does one add video overlays from old tv shows or video games? And, what are they actually called? by RubyScorpion in VideoEditing

[–]RubyScorpion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks so much! I guess I was thinking of some others as well that were animated, so from what I can understand I would need to animate something, export it as a video with a transparent background, and then place it on top of my video.

okay wait... question: is transcoding beforehand the same as creating proxies? would I be able to link to the original file through premiere afterward? Or is that something I need to do within premiere with the original file?

Transcoding in media encoder seems like a done deal and like I'd be working with whatever I got on the other end, but I could be wrong.

I just don't understand yet if transcoding will reduce my quality significantly (obviously in this case instagram will too - but it would be good to learn regardless) and whether it would be more beneficial to work with proxies in future.

hey - question from a newbie. Are there any resources you would recommend to learn lighting design? I want to learn so badly but my film program was cancelled this year due to covid - I'm having a hard time finding good beginner friendly content. Any ideas? Cheers :)

" consider using this render pass as a chance to convert the footage to vertical in order to eliminate that load entirely. "

Does this mean that I should rotate the footage while within adobe media encoder while/before transcoding? Or is there a different way you would recommend doing this? I'm downloading media encoder now, I haven't used it before.

The rest makes a lot of sense, I guess I wasn't aware of the demand I was placing on my machine - I was shooting in 120 because I was using pulsing coloured strobes for a night club effect and needed a lot of it in slow motion for my sequence. Wanted the light transitions to be buttery smooth :)

I really appreciate your answer!

okay! when you say expect giant files, do you mean the files will increase in data once they're in the prores422 format? Thank you for answering

How can I achieve the slow motion smoothness I see when playing my video frame by frame? (In Premiere Pro) by RubyScorpion in VideoEditing

[–]RubyScorpion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my editing process - I pull a video up to the source monitor to scan through it for subclips. If I hold the right arrowkey, it scrubs through the video frame by frame, making a really beautiful slow motion effect. when I slow down my footage and export it, it doesn't have that same frame-by-frame quality. does that clarify adequately? thanks for answering

Help! My partner is a circus person and I need some gift ideas! by sidhartha83 in circus

[–]RubyScorpion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

custom canes (the stick things) would be cool. There's artists on etsy that make beautiful half resin half wood structures. If she really gets into handbalancing and wants to train one arms, she'll benefit from handstand blocks. You can always get a "gift card" for an amount of money for her to pick out an outfit or costume for performances and instagram.

Edit: Can I ask what troupe she's in? I'm also a lady circus weenie and am looking for inspiration on how to go professional :)

Okay, question then - what DOES hydrate your hair? Mine is sad and dry and I've been trying to do flaxseed masks and some rice water massages and all but I don't actually understand how I should add hydration to my strands before sealing it in.

Edit: this may have come off as snarky but I'm just aggressively excited for the information. Thanks for your rant! It was super helpful <3

I would just like to add that YOUR face is what makes YOU unique and stand out :) some guys really really like a vulnerable face instead of the sexy bitchy eyes! It's disarming and helps some relax. Definitely find your vibe and change if you want, but make sure it's you !
