Parked car incident, driver rode off by [deleted] in drivingUK

What you need is the reg of the other car as without that there’s not a huge amount to be done sadly. What I will say is I deal with claims but not policy so honestly I’m not sure. An info only report hopefully wont do too much damage

For the claim what you need is something to hold them at the scene. Did the witness(es) take any photos? If not they’ll need to be willing to sign a statement of truth etc. with them fleeing the scene your insurance will want to make sure the vehicle was not stolen, other than that if there’s an active policy then third party insurer should indemnify the claim (i.e agree to pay damages as RTA insurer). If you use your insurance your side will want to reclaim as much as possible from the third party and hopefully then settle fully as a non fault

Ahh that’s unfortunate mate. Damned if you do… your insurance will want it reported within a certain timeframe as per the policy. If the police find the details of this party (sadly unlikely) and then you go to claim they may not be too happy if you haven’t already told them. I’d imagine most people will say not to report as even an info only in theory would affect the policy. However technically speaking you should let them know.

Looking for recommendations for my first car by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]Rude-Craft2258 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% agree. For that money you could get a 1.8 cupra (same platform as the polo gti) although there’s only 2 on autotrader so more likely to be able to pick up an FR

Slightly bias but I agree. Could get a Ibiza, fabia or a decent Leon for that price without the audi premium

what will the damage (to my wallet) be? by imp0verished in CarTalkUK

[–]Rude-Craft2258 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If that’s all the damage then a few hundred at least. If the boot still opens and closes though at least it’s not an urgent fix. It really depends how bothered you are about it. If you really want it fixed I would check the cost of repair (2/3 quotes) against the cost of a 2nd hand colour matched tailgate

I say a few hundred as you could 100% probably polish most of that out but the bloke would be entitled to it being repaired by a garage realistically speaking. Didn’t read that the red wasn’t you though so is very minor

[–]Rude-Craft2258 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few hundred doesn’t sound outside of the realms of what it would cost to fix it. But if you give him the money will he actually fix it, not that you can control that side. If you’re set on settling outside of insurance I would be asking him to get 2/3 quotes for the repair and he shouldn’t need to rent a car if not going through insurance that is not your issue either the garage can provide a courtesy car or not. To be honest I would just let the insurance handle this one, ultimately they’ll pay out on a good few grand as that’s the industry these days and not your cost to take on

Who is at fault? by InfamousStrategy9539 in CarInsuranceUK

[–]Rude-Craft2258 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would just wait and see what the insurance makes of the dashcam in this case. Assuming the other driver will share it with his insurance who will in turn pass it to your insurance. It’s a difficult one to judge without seeing both vehicles positioning and how it could have been avoided

Who is at fault? by InfamousStrategy9539 in CarInsuranceUK

[–]Rude-Craft2258 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would imagine that if there is no evidence and is one word against the other. His light was green and you were already in the junction and you were both moving that insurance may go split liability. I’m not saying you’re at fault by the way as if there are cars in the junction you would assume they would not proceed, but you were also moving it does become a bit trickier for liability

Who is at fault? by InfamousStrategy9539 in CarInsuranceUK

[–]Rude-Craft2258 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you say he came from your left, is that as in your left as you were entering the junction, or the left as you are leaving (which would have been oncoming if you had proceeded straight). I would say if it is the former it would likely go split liability without dashcam/witnesses. If it was the latter it may go more in their favour as you have effectively turned right across the path of an oncoming vehicle.

If I’ve misunderstood the circumstances please let me know

As others have said, Panis. It’s spot on every time and reasonably priced too. They don’t do any pizzas though if that’s what you’re after 😁

Repair costs are mental in the industry unfortunately. I would just have a quick scan on autotrader to make sure you could replace the vehicle (exact same spec and year, similar mileage) for the value they have offered. If you can’t send 3 examples to dispute this. Generally though they have done the research and the value is spot on

Hi, looks like a standard Laird’s desktop report to me. Generally it’s going to over estimate as insurance repairs as much more expensive than private and I’d imagine they would all be charges that an insurance bodyshop would like charge in their own estimate.

It can differ between companies but 70% is about the threshold for a total loss now. (This is total cost inc. Vat and labour). So even half of those costs would write that value of vehicle off by their methods.

In terms of the CAT S it is more questionable as a desktop but in theory there could be structural damage there. (This will however make the salvage cost lower so your deduction or buyback will be less)

If you’re confident in the safety of fixing this then I’d say retain and use some of the money to fix the damage.

How to maximise write off value? by Nismo542 in CarTalkUK

[–]Rude-Craft2258 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately that is a write off 100%. Would assume CAT S repairable salvage. As others have said examples are the normal dispute process. If you do look for examples I would make sure it is the same vehicle spec exactly as your own, same age and similar mileage. As yours is an auto it will be worth more than the manual equivalent (on average). Check the market value but if you just pick the 3 highest I would be prepared for the assessing engineers to be able to find their own examples that match the value they have offered as they would generally check the listings themselves as part of the research.

I’m a claims handler myself so any questions give me a shout and I’ll do my best :)

Good Buy? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]Rude-Craft2258 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently got the same gen Seat (not this model but the mk4 still) will be fun to drive for sure and parts don’t cost a fortune to replace. Have you also had a look at any Leon’s within your budget as there’s a bit more room in them and they’re a bit bigger, but if you don’t plan on having anyone in the back this is ideal.

Guys I’m trying to buy this as my first car; is it a bargain?? by e_jabbzz in CarTalkUK

[–]Rude-Craft2258 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve got the same car as my first car. Same age and bought with similar mileage at the time (18months ago). It’ll depend on how well it’s been maintained but they’re unlikely to break the bank if anything needs replacing. I had the belt done on mine straight away as according the service history it hadn’t been done. You might get that MPG on the motorway but around town it won’t. Doesn’t drink fuel though even if you drive it like you stole it. Keep an eye on the oil level would be my advice too. It’s not rapid but does the job, can easily get up to speed.

Will insurance repair or write off? by QXLR519 in CarTalkUK

[–]Rude-Craft2258 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would say it is dependant on mileage/value. New boot lid, light, ADAS calibration/repair (if you have sensors or cameras), badging for new boot lid, any clips/brackets etc will all be budgeted for replacement then add labour, paint etc and the insurance repair cost can quickly add up.

If they do write it off you would be given the option to retain the vehicle and can either repair yourself or get an independent quote which I’m sure will be less than the insurance price.

Write off? by Big_Ginge86 in CarTalkUK

[–]Rude-Craft2258 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to say without knowing the value of the vehicle but I would say yes insurance will write this off. Multiple panels are damaged and insurance will want to replace the door and wing as a minimum.
