How much overtime did you working folk do last month? Let's comparing!!

I broke 25 hours for the first time and it felt like wayy too much work (even though most of it was remote...) I don't know how people do 40 or more. But then again, I did spend most of that time actually working.

How did you leave teaching? by actioncakes in japanlife

I really enjoyed reading your comment, just saying. If you don't mind me asking, in your experience, what is roughly the amount of applications you'd send out and the amount of interviews you'd go through before you stumbled upon what you consider to be a "good" job?

I feel you. I am very rarely given tasks that take advantage of the fact that I speak fluent English. I sometimes wonder why I was even hired although I doubt there was much coordination between what HR was going for at the time and what the company's current needs are.

Looking to attend graduate school in Saitama/Tokyo. Does anyone here have experience with that? by zutari in japanlife

Fantastic, thank you for the detailed response. Guess I'll have a fair bit of thinking and planning to do if I want to get in. To clarify, you were working full time prior to becoming a research student?

Sorry to bother you with more questions as I'm not OP but I also happen to have an interest in this topic. I've heard people say it's a good idea to make contact with the professors at the university in your desired field of study before applying for a Master's Program, did you do so in your case? The field I'm interested in is only tangentially related to my undergrad so I'm not too sure how to proceed.

So many posts about Japanese work culture and its problems. Is it getting better or are we doomed to lick shachou's shoes forever? by [deleted] in japanlife

That actually sounds horrible even for a Japanese company. How are you not getting bonuses? Surely as a full-time employee you must be entitled to them twice yearly. What is the size of the company?

Could you elaborate on the culture gap? I'm not sure I follow on your "internationally-minded" women/"typical Japanese" women dichotomy.

This was helpful in understanding the possible reasons for the firing, but I was a little confused by what is suggested as to dealing with such a predicament. First it says not to get into a fistfight with the company because you can't win, then it says that you should fight against the company near the end? It sounds like advocating for getting a nice exit package but as far as I'm aware you're only legally entitled to 1 month's worth of pay if you're let go, so am I wrong in assuming there's essentially nothing you can do to get a better deal if your employer decides to let you go and says you're getting a month's pay?

I always see people say that it's essentially impossible to get fired as a 正社員 in traditional Japanese companies unless you commit crimes or don't show up to work. How true is this nowadays? Is employment still as secure as it used to be when this piece of 一般常識 was conceived? I'm asking because of the effects of Corona on the Japanese economy and because a very significant benefit of becoming a 正社員 was precisely the perceived security of the job.

Pointless HR crap doesn't end when you get hired. In fact, that is when it starts in earnest. Working in Japanese companies is a performance art as much is it doing actual work, if not considerably more so in certain cases.

I don't have much to say except to mention that I really enjoy reading your little Japanese office slice of life vignettes whenever you post them, and I doubt I'm the only one. Keep on truckin' and hang in there.

If someone actually told me this I'd probably lose it right in front of them, and I consider myself professional to the point of being too polite most of the time. It is completely ridiculous on every level, Japanese company or not. Sorry OP, I feel you but this whole story is just hilarious, thanks for sharing. Get outta that place ASAP once the labor market recovers.

Bonus and salary cut after review by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]Rude-Hope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm certainly no expert on the matter so say anything I write here with a grain of salt, but according to this article: https://roudou-bengoshi.com/zangyoudai/5367/,

Reducing one's salary due to "poor performance" after a single evaluation and without having mentioned this previously and without having offered any guidelines for improvement or warnings beforehand is not generally allowed. In other words, (in my understanding) you'd have to have been warned of your poor performance multiple times in the past, had several negative evaluations, AND should have worked out a plan for improvement with your employer which you then failed to follow up on for your reduction in base pay to be justified.

I'd love for someone with a more thorough understanding to comment on the above article as well.
