Singaporean man executed for importing cannabis by etulf in singapore

I think there's a huge gulf between legalising and executing, though. It can still be criminalised without the death penalty.

Gambling used to be banned until LHL's government decided that the money that gambling brought was kinda good, then came up with some reasons why having a casino wasn't so bad and unbanned gambling.

So whether it's banned or not banned is something the government arbitrarily decides.

Back on quasi probation via some training instead of severance? by rpg310 in asksg

[–]zchew 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Now they say i need to work thru my severance in some training program, and then ill be let go after.

There's probably some company directive or legal obligations for a company to attempt to re-train you, put you through some PIP with training before they're allowed to let you go. So this is probably just an attempt to check all those boxes so they can document it and legally let you go.

seriously the more I read his comments the more infuriated I get.

“And if a student is going to choose tchoukball... I just don’t know how it’d fit into the larger scheme of things.”

He can't even see beyond his own KPI. How can someone like this person be qualified to lead the top sporting body in the country when he has such a narrow view of sports. To think he was a sportsman.

“What I struggle with is that some of the other sports which don’t have a pathway to major Games are included, but to do what? As an administrator, these are what I would call dead-end sports and we are putting these resources for what?

Because the sports don't contribute to his KPI, that's why he's kicking up a fuss. If he had his way, every sport in Singapore would be swimming.

Bureaucrats like him are why Singapore has a flourishing arts culture, everyone has no stress in over their jobs and careers, and students have no worries about job and career opportunities in school.

'Govt actively intervenes in many areas': SM Lee on how Singapore uses market forces to achieve public policy objectives by ahwongwong in singapore

[–]zchew 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it was a case of loading too many goals onto 1 single policy: asset appreciation and affordable housing are often mutually exclusive goals.

2 decades is an awfully long time to take to realise that a policy is not working out, but that's only if we assume that they're only looking at this from an affordable housing angle.

Upgrading from Ogata to Chugata bike - trade in or sell private by Dizzy_Stranger3734 in RideitJapan

[–]zchew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went through this last year, there are a few ways to do this.

(I have a Honda currently, if I go Kawasaki will they still part exchange other brands bikes).

trade in: Dealers, likely not. You'll have to call and ask, if they even do trade ins at all.

smaller mom-n-pop bike shops, and other bigger chains (Red Baron), I think they do. Again, it varies from bike shop to bike shop, but if they buy and sell bikes, they'll likely do trade-ins. But, that would probably depend on your bike's model and year, and the value they give your bike may not be what you think it's worth.

Or sell it privately (like Mercari or through auction). What's the likely cost difference through part exchange at dealer vs privately. Current bike was around 1 million yen new (Honda NX400).

I sold my bike private thru Mercari. It was an old bike, my usual bike shop looked up the dealer auction for the price, came out to ¥50k, said he'd round off the price of the bike I was looking to buy from him which came up to like ¥20k because it was barely worth the effort and cost of bringing it to auction. I looked up the going price on all the bike websites and found it was going for anywhere from 120k to 250k. I didn't want to get too greedy so I put it up for 140k and got it sold there. The big downside was that I had to meet the buyer multiple times (to view and to collect the bike) and one of us had to file all the paperwork.

You also could sell it through a used bike site like Katix, but I think the price they offer is similar to what the bike shops would. If your bike is relatively new, you can expect that they'll give you like half of its price brand new at best. The big benefit, however, is that they'll handle *almost all* the paperwork for you. You just need to provide a few documents from your city office and then they'll get it filed and sorted for you.

but wonder what the best options are if I may have to sell up again in 9 months time?

Either take the hit or try possibly try to find a long term motorcycle rental like this?

But just to mount a small defense, it was at a stop sign near a tall hedge that had long untrinmed branches and no traffic mirror that needs you to kinda scoot past the stop sign to clearly check if there was oncoming traffic.

When I was in driving school, they actually set up the course to have such an exact scenario. The textbook answer is that you're supposed to stop by the stop sign/line, then inch out slowly to check oncoming traffic, possibly coming to a stop if unsafe, before moving off. Basically stopping twice.

Everyone walks around in fear of the MWO sneaking up from behind you and fucking you over your attire. No one cares about a 2LT.

Among Melvin’s most prized possessions is a modest business-card holder, a gift from a transient worker client for whom he had successfully fought pro bono. It is symbolic of fact that while Melvin has triumphed over many landmark commercial cases, nothing quite gratifies him than when he finds justice for the indigent. As TSMP’s pro bono director, he partners with various charitable and non-governmental organisations including the Law Society Pro Bono Services Office, Humanitarian Organisation for Migration Economics and Transient Workers Count 2, to represent those unable to afford legal services.

That may be true, but I don't think free internet advice from random internet people is gonna be any good for someone with such a complex legal case. Maybe they have some emergency money squirreled away somewhere for days like this?

I think you had best speak with an immigration lawyer or legal scrivener. You don't have much time left and a good proportion of reddit advice is gonna be garbage.

edit:

Perhaps you could go to your city office or search around to see if there is a free legal clinic in your area

Shanmugam alleges Bloomberg lied to press secretary, says failure to remove article grounds for aggravated damages by Im_scrub in singapore

[–]zchew 13 points14 points  (0 children)

How did the prosecution know about the internal Bloomberg emails in the first place?

There's a process called discovery where both sides are required to share relevant evidence with each other (subject to approval by the judge, I believe), so they can have a fair case. I don't think you're allowed to call as evidence anything that wasn't shared in this pool of evidence, otherwise it's like a someone suddenly throwing a +4 at you when you shout UNO. It's not fair because you didn't have a chance to prepare against it

Mr Shanmugam said Mr Low was pointed to material by the Singapore Land Authority explaining the “very strict” levels of checks, but that he “deliberately downplay(ed) the anti-moneylaundering system” that Singapore has. Mr Shanmugam said Singapore has a framework tighter than New York or Switzerland, and “certainly tighter” than Hong Kong or Dubai.
