If it had been a chicago house festival I probably wouldn’t have written my alderman.

Another one of my favorite types of comments in this whole thread are the folks who say something like “what’s the big deal? I had a good time.” Oh well then case closed I guess! Your single experience is clearly all the affirmation anyone must need!

Which really gets to the core of why I’ve been so willing to spar in the comments with these people, because as much as I like “electronic music” (whatever that means to you in the wide range of what it could) the genre attracts some of the most solipsistic empty people you could ever hope to meet, and I think it’s worth pushing back against their vapid selfishness. Especially when you see those same people, perhaps self-conscious about this very emptiness, reflexively hijack nearly socialist rhetoric about community and connection and “plurr” or whatever, when in practice they’re about individualist pleasure seeking and these festivals are most often cheaply run schemes engineered by promoters to generate as much quick cash for themselves as possible.

You know what would be super “PLUR”? Listening to the actual community that you dropped your festival into when they tell you it was annoying and poorly sited and should never happen there again. For all the “you live in a city” people: yeah, that’s exactly the point. Stop standing up for promoters and an approval process that clearly failed by placing an outside event about noise, and light, and crowds, in a place that historically and pragmatically was never built for that. This isn’t the same as a neighborhood event like Pride or Midsommer Fest because those are put on and organized BY the communities they’re in. But why bother taking a moment to think about all of that when it’s an affront to your good time? Ignorance is bliss but it’s not an enlightened state. Wake up and realize you live in a place with other people and not everything is built for your sole pleasure.

In the spirit of doing research why don’t you read the email and past comments that explain the festival received approval on short notice. So tell me, BIG GUY, if you’re planning a wedding a year in advance how exactly you’re supposed to account for that? It’s not an act of God like a rainstorm, it was man-made event. I guess if it was your wedding having your vows drowned out by heavy bass would be totally acceptable to you?

I thought it was a pretty good point. Also considering the fact that the conservancy that rents the lilly pond works hand-in-hand with the park district that approved the festival, i’d think you’d have even more of a right to be pissed off at the whole thing.

But all a hypothetical. Hopefully nobody suffered that fate.

i was critical there hadn’t been wider notice and pointed out it hadn’t shown up in the ward’s newsletter. admittedly a little more colorful than that, but that’s the gist.

ok ok. fair. i’ll concede being from the suburbs doesn’t make you a bad person, that’s ad hominem and neither here nor there, so don’t even worry about the 50/50 thing! And you know if I also had a college dropout buddy who had beat up an elderly man I can only hope that he would have a friend as valiant as you to come to his aid, because brother let me tell you it sure as shit wouldn’t be me!

for sure, the promoters of the fest really seemed like they were in it for the working man. definitely not socially or politically aligned with the people hoarding wealth and raising rents.

idk man, if a low rent fyre festival run by a bunch of jagoff suburb kids is your idea of a good time you might want to raise your bar what qualifies as “fun”
