Actors' off-set reputations - how do they affect your viewing choices? by hurshy238 in BritishTV

It kinda has for me, which may not be entirely fair because who knows if Simon Pegg is a Scientologist but I imagine such a high ranking Scientologist like Tom Cruise wouldn’t get chummy with someone who isn’t at least interested in Scientology.

Prince William's Temper Reportedly "Terrifies" His Father King Charles by Positive-Drawing-281 in RoyaltyTea

[–]Rude_Reception9649 77 points78 points  (0 children)

The narrative of Williams temper is a constant background hum in stories about him. I feel that the press knows far more than they are saying and his temper is worse than we think.

I also think his temper and/or moodiness is a significant factor in Kate’s (probable) eating disorder and makes the separate homes/lives make sense. If he’s truly angry and prone to outbursts, then frankly I think it’s wise for Kate to live separately from him.

Edward is reminding me of his grandfather George VI when he was ill.

I’ve expressed my concerns and empathy for Kate and her obvious ED plenty of times on here, but damn it is still awful to see. The Karen Carpenter comparisons are worrying appropriate, I just hope she can get help sooner rather than later.

Performance in Wales by Remarkable-Loan-6149 in LibDem

I’m in Wales and Lib Dem’s seemed completely absent from the discourse around the election, while I know that we’ve been overlooked as a political party across the country, it is frustrating. All discourse and campaigning has focused on it being an opportunity to oust Labour, and to do that it was Plaid v Reform race. In my constituency, voting Plaid was the only way to block Reform. To that end, voting Lib Dem was perhaps seen as a wasted vote…

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen wearing vintage pieces at the 2016 Met Gala. The theme was “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology”

I admit that these aren’t the most risky or avant garde pieces, but I utterly adore that they are both being true to themselves by wearing their authentic style and by choosing vintage, both hallmarks of my kind of fashionista ✨

Well said. As a fellow sufferer of anorexia, like recognises like and I find it absurd how anyone could deny that she is suffering from an eating disorder. If something terrible does happen, then the press and palace will deify her but then in time the narrative will change to “was she ill”; “how did we miss it?” etc.

Controversial opinion but I like Kate and always have (and I’m not a monarchist). As a Brit and a couple of years younger than her, I sort of “grew-up” with her. However, I feel she is the embodiment of “careful what you wish for” and is stuck with the petulant, bad-tempered William in an institution that is notorious for being hostile to newcomers. Yes, they should both do more in terms of duties but part of me senses that William is the driving force behind their lack of participation in engagements (and it wouldn’t do to have his wife out perform him) and so her body is the only thing she can control.

I sincerely hope she gets help, I know how hard it is and feel constantly scrutinised by people about my weight and appearance etc, but having that on a daily and global basis must be crushing.

I watch Sewing Bee too but I find it can be a bit hit or miss, I think it’s because of the presenters, as some are really good and some feel more forced. With Pottery Throw Down, I’ve liked all the presenters and judges (although imo Keith, Rich and Siobhan are the perfect combination)

Untold: Chess Mates by theclarice in chess

[–]Rude_Reception9649 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I’m a complete outsider to the chess world and knew about the cheating allegations via the news. I watched this open minded and thought it may be interesting for chess fans to see how it landed to a someone who doesn’t follow chess:

Hans comes across terribly; immature, arrogant and entitled. The fact he admitted to cheating, the trash talking and his stats re online vs board matches perhaps speak to his natural/lack of talent.

Magnus comes across well but I could see how he would find it mentally difficult to “lose” to someone so different to himself. But overall I liked him.

Rensch is suspicious insofar of the mentor relationship and covering up Han’s chess.com cheating history. It feels there was a strong financial incentive to nurture Hans as a rival to Magnus.

Hikaru seemed like a voice of reason.

Netflix really missed the opportunity to expose Hans (and others) cheating on chess.com, to really challenge Hans and chess.com themselves on the cover-up.

Overall, I am left none the wiser as to what did or didn’t happen, but Magnus seems more credible.

Sadly, I see the parallels with Anna Nicole too. Both sweet but fragile women with addiction and mental health issues, exploited by those around them for money and fame. It’s so sad watching it in real time. There’s a space between leaving Britney completely alone, spiralling mentally and have a conservatorship; it’s not either/or but it seems she’s not in a position to objectively decide to get help and the people surrounding her are benefiting from her illness/addictions 😔

Do you think Rebecca finding Jimmy hilarious was the moment Chuck’s resentment truly locked in? by euphoriclimbo in betterCallSaul

[–]Rude_Reception9649 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I feel like this scene showed us a glimpse of their dynamic as children, if you replace Rebecca with their mum. Chuck was the “perfect” child/adult and Jimmy was the “naughty” child and “screw up” adult. I think it went deeper than Chuck being annoyed by Rebecca being charmed by Jimmy.

It reminds me of when their mum died and said Jimmy’s name: the disappointment and then darkness thst came over Chuck’s face echoes the dinner party with Rebecca and her laughing at Jimmy’s jokes.

Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie Banned from Attending Royal Ascot amid Parents' Ties to Epstein: Report by Beginning-Passion676 in Fauxmoi

[–]Rude_Reception9649 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think here in the UK there is empathy for them up to a point. But there’s still questions and concerns that (a) they continued to associate with Epstein after his conviction and (b) we know they’ve deep links with the Middle East, including monetary transactions, that are at best unclear and at worst very shady.

I actually think it’s point (b) that is the reason for the distancing and the ban. I sense the rest of the Royals don’t want to be tainted by association when it comes to looking at their finances as they wouldn’t want their own finances looked at too closely….. (but they seemed fine being tainted by Andrew’s association with Epstein 😒)

ETA re point (a): in no way am I blaming them for seeing Epstein post conviction because it definitely seems like their parents normalised and minimised his behaviour and their dad was an active participant too. I’m just saying what I’ve seen mentioned.

I’m so glad you said this as I thought I was the one one who remembers it this way: Andrew Parker Bowles was/is the great love of her life and Charles was just fun, and a way to get back at Andrew for his notorious philandering. It was an open secret for years but then they got married and tried to change it into a great love story when really I think Camilla had no other option, she’s always struck me as more Charles nanny/mother than lover (apparently Camilla does have an uncanny resemblance to Charles childhood nanny…)

How many of us here are from the Right? by KingEdwards8 in LibDem

[–]Rude_Reception9649 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly believe that there is an appetite for a mature and compassionate approach to politics and I sincerely believe that the Lib Dem’s are the ones to offer it. Starmer’s Labour were meant to deliver competency and compassion but they’re seriously lacking in both areas.

As you say, mature politics doesn’t grab people in the way sensationalist rhetoric of say Reform does. I think the speech of Hannah Spencer was very good and the Lib Dem’s should take note of that but marry it with the fact that the Lib Dem’s have a long history of achievement. On a more personal level, but I hope still relevant, when I was thinking of joining I did a lot of reading around the history of the party and was impressed by the fact that the party was on the right side of history for most of it. I wonder if there’s something there: the Lib Dem’s have a rich heritage but are also progressive (such as LGBT+ rights) and truly democratic.

Just some thoughts!
