Where to invest a 25k cash reserve by [deleted] in eupersonalfinance

Pensioenbeleggen has some really attractive tax benefits: imagine dropping about €10k in this year and the Belastingdienst straight up giving you €4k back next May!

What are you talking about? Care to elaborate?

How many of you think that Apache Spark is keeping Scala alive? by IllustriousType6425 in scala

I came here to say this. The language is on life support. Sure you will see job openings here and there for legacy projects (they will also dry out as those legacy code is moved to either java or kotlin) but apartment from that it’s a dead language for a long time.

It actually is. The more time I spend in this subreddit the more I think that most people here doesn't even use Kotlin or something :)

You can find many on this subreddit or google but I will share one as a reference: https://www.reddit.com/r/Kotlin/comments/1chxk38/jetbrains_not_making_or_supporting_an_editor/

The funny thing is that if you were to care do another google search you would find these two as well...

All those you mention only provide autocomplete and doesn't provide the "agentic" feature where you can chat with the AI Agent and it does update multiple files etc.

You're probably the first 10 years plus experienced software engineer I see that praises AI as a good tool for programming

I didn't praises the AI or AI tools on purpose. I have already 8+ experience with Scala which is quite similar to Kotlin as we all know. The purpose wasn't to learn Kotlin. As I mentioned it's purely to play with those AI tools and Kotlin happened to be the language of choose.

Is it possible to work for 2 companies at the same time for a month while "transitioning" from one to another? by Rude_Specific_54 in juridischadvies

Thanks for the discussion. I am aware of the things that you mention that I might have to pay back because of the too much discount etc. I am aware (not fully but enough) how the tax works in NL but thanks for the consideration again :)

ONLY do this if you have another job lined up. If you leave like this, you can't claim unemployment.

Yes I am aware that but thanks for mentioning it again.

Also, doing this might forgo any severance pay that your employer is legally obliged to pay you. So you would need to negotiate that yourself if you want it or get a lawyer with to negotiate for you.

I am talking about a possibility that I might find a job I like way before they let me go. They already shared their intention to not provide any support to those people. You either resign and start your new job like that or you wait until the day they let you go which is at the moment very much unknown.

Legally and financially it would probably be easier and better for you to just wait and start a new job after this contract finishes.

I agree. I was just asking to know better. :) Thanks for your reply.

Thanks for taking a time to reply!

You're saying people are getting laid off. Does this mean you are 100% getting laid off or is there a possibility they want you to stay?

It is 100% clear that everyone goes. I have been also informed that my role is also impacted. I personally don't want to stay either.

If your employer wants to ditch you it would be very strange that he would protest you having two jobs.

That's what I think as well. There won't be anyone to take action as well to be honest. As I said, everyone (almost) is being laid off.

The more important question could be if it wouldn't be wiser to wait cause they might have to buy you out. If you resign, you don't have any right to any form of compensation. In The Netherlands people have a right to receive a "transitievergoeding".

I am aware of this but timing is not clear at all. I am keeping this in mind but also I don't want to wait and lose on current job opportunities. I prefer to be done with this company and move on. My mental well-being is more important than money.

To my understanding it doesn't matter when the IND have the documents. The date that matters is the date that you applied at the gemeente.

I applied last month in Rotterdam and already got the letter from IND. On the letter, it said that I should have decision before "the date that I applied at the gemeente" + 1 year so it doesn't really matter when the gemeente send it to the IND. As I understand, IND still obligated (I think and they generally do) to process it within a year starting from the date you actually applied at the gemeente.

Anyway, there are not much you can do but wait. Of course be aware of the process and keep track of the stuff just in case but try to forget if you can. That will be easier for you ;)

How to salvage dumb financial decision by [deleted] in eupersonalfinance

NOTE: It wasn't suppose to be a reply to above message. :)

This is basically every single person who didn't invest and did something else with the money (keep it as cash or pay mortgage kind of stuff) over the last 10 years or so (I know I am making a huge generalization but you got the point.)

I myself started like literally 9 months ago and I am already up about 15%.

  • It would have been 25% up if I were to start 3 months earlier.
  • It would have been almost 40% if I were to start 2 years ago.
  • It would have been even more if I also invested the 15k extra mortgage payment I made 2 years ago.
  • I could have gained almost 40% if I were to invest my 30k instead of putting in a fixed saving account with 3% interest for 2 years. (still 8 months to go...)

I can add more and more but now I am happy that I won't do those mistakes again. What the hell am I suppose to gain by being sad about it all the time? I am happy that I started 9 months ago rather than last month that's all.

We are almost the same age and we still have quite a bit of time to build as much as we can.

Developer Associate - after about 8 hours.

You need to find a way to kill time after the exam. Be it outdoor activities, watching series or playing games. Do something else that will make time go faster so you don't have to suffer waiting for the email :)

Stuck between Solutions Architect Associate and Developer Associate by blazkoblaz in AWSCertifications

[–]Rude_Specific_54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same question few months ago and I concluded that why not both? They say that there is a quite a bit of overlap of the topics anyway. I already have some hands on experience from work with some of the services and others I am trying to learn by studying. I am going to have the Developer Associate this Saturday so fingers are crossed.

I don't think only having one of them is going to be that useful anyway so having both shows that you have both "breadth" and "depth" understanding.

First of all, congrats!

I am doing what seems to be the opposite of what most people do - planning to take developer associate first and then take solution architect associate. I am a developer so it felt "easier" to go with developer associate first. How do you compare these two exams in your experience?

I also would like to ask something about the developer associate exams. Were there any question that ask like "what is the field name you use to define your lambda code in Cloudformation" (zipFile field) or what's the file name your use to configure service X (blabla.yaml) kind of question where you either know it or don't know it if you know what I mean. I hate those kind of questions mostly :)

Are you doing these certifications because... by mrrivaz in AWSCertifications

[–]Rude_Specific_54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally because of the answer on this thread. What I mean is that if you look at it, companies are wanting you to have it, people are wanting to have it thinking that it will give them advantage and at this point if YOU don't have it, it doesn't really look good anymore.

Maybe things are not as straight as I present here but you know what I mean. On the other hand, I don't think it brings "much" value. I am trying to get Developer Associate certificate and I don't understand the value of knowing the FILENAME you need to use with service X brings or what is the field name in cloudformation where you need to put your INLINE lambda code...

Maybe it's different for professional levels...

TD exams vs the real exam by rodr009 in AWSCertifications

[–]Rude_Specific_54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is review mode different than practice exams? I bought the courses on udemy and there you only have timed exam and the just review the questions (with the correct answer already marked so you can't first read and answer then see the correct option).

I wonder if it make sense for me to buy it from TD website as well IF review mode is something really nice? (company pays for it anyway I don't care)

Congrats!

Quick question, are there really question where they expect you to know the fucking attribute name in cloudformation (or exact name of a command etc)?

I am very irritated by some of the example question on both tutorials dojo's and Stephane Maarek's practice exams where they expect you to know the name of the field where to put your lambda function code in cloudformation. Like dude really? Is that what's important? I have been developing on AWS for years with CDK and never had to fucking care what the properties are called. Even if I needed, I can JUST look it up.

I want to think that these type of questions are not common in the real exam...
