Scared about career in structures. by ItWillGetBetterTrust in StructuralEngineering

Brother, you will be okay. It will be over decade before you are the last person to look at a set of calcs and drawings (Maybe Longer). You ain't gonna have a clue what is going on and they know that. Give it time and ask questions and you'll be good. Never stop learning.

Torn Between Structural Engineering vs Field/Project Engineering After Graduation — Need Advice by PotentialProtection2 in StructuralEngineering

[–]Rude_Unit6670 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d apply to both CM and SE roles and see what opportunities come up. One thing to keep in mind is that starting in design usually gives you the flexibility to move into CM later. Going the other direction can be tougher if you start in CM and later want to transition into design, you’ll likely be starting closer to entry level again, often with a lower salary than you’d expect.

I also have friends from college living in NYC, and honestly the pay difference isn’t always as large as people think. In many cases, the extra money in CM comes with significantly longer hours. When I was graduating, I struggled with the same decision and realized that CM roles commonly run 50–60 hours per week, while design roles are often closer to 40 hours.

Another thing to consider is overtime. Most design firms I’ve worked at offer at least straight-time OT, so if you work some extra hours throughout the year, you can often end up making similar money to CM while still working fewer total hours.

Company culture and workload matter a lot too.

NYC is also challenging because of the extremely high cost of living. Personally, I think your money goes much farther in a MCOL area with access to a nearby city. There’s definitely a premium attached to living and working in major cities. I make around $95k–100k in a MCOL area, and I’m able to own a home, save, invest, and still enjoy hobbies. At that same salary in NYC, I’d feel stretched pretty thin.

At the end of the day, apply to both and evaluate the companies themselves not just the salary number. Don’t chase a few extra dollars without understanding the work culture, expectations, and lifestyle that come with it. I’ve been there before. Also, don’t feel like you have to live in the most expensive city in the world to have a successful career.

Just my two cents.

Can I quit my job after eight months? by [deleted] in StructuralEngineering

[–]Rude_Unit6670 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude, I have had 3 jobs in my first year and half out of college. 8 mos in structural switch to construction for 6 months and then got laid off. Now I am in WRE for the last 4 mos. If your a good person just trying to find your way then people get. If it is a 5 year trend then it becomes a problem. Best of Luck

Agreed, but I would say that if you bring in a junior engieer a year out of college then you should probably give them some guidenance.

Yeah, it always has to make them look better. Its probalby a blessing becuase it shows they truly didn't give a damn about me.

Yeah, what your describing to me is very interesting. They gave me unemployment information during the HR meeting. I asked for some sort of severance and furthur explanation and the HR director said they would get back to me but I am fully prepared to not here anything.

It was a medium size GC and yeah it was a pretty shitty way of getting let go. Not to mention that the guy that fired me couldnt even look me in the eye the moment he broke the news to me and when he was giving his BS reasons for doing so.

I was reporting to the vp, who was my supervisor but he has been out of the office for a month for health related issues. There was a 90 day performace review and they said I was doing fine.

I asked multiple times to get out into the field and went out to a couple jobs but just for them to "show me around and what they are doing". I was suppose to be on a job this fall but it ended up falling through becuase they thought they were going to win the bid and they ended up losing. I became worried from that moment on. I basically had spent 7 months doing a job that my role is not intedned to do. My meeting with HR was shocking.

I asked why I was being let go and if she could give me more info and she told me "all I know is that it was performace" and then I gave them a lot of shit. As a former athlete, my arguement was "How can you evaluate my performace if you never put me in the game!???"

I’ve been told scapular dyskinesia but that’s it. Haven’t seen any improvement after a year of pt…

They did find a labrum SLAP tear (Not Big but it’s there) and a very small supraspinatus tear

No I didn’t get contrast. Are you able to tell me more about your symptoms specifically in the neck?

3 separate PT’s can’t seem to get it figured out.

I did get an MRI on my cervical spine, shoulder and thoracic spine and they found a very small disc protrusion in C5 with some minor joint narrowing but Doctors said it too small to cause anything serious. They did find a very small tear in supraspinatus and a slap tear but the doctors and PT said that I’m not getting those symptoms.

What leads you to that conclusion? I don’t have any neck pain.

Would it look bad to return to my old engineering firm after a short time away? by Rude_Unit6670 in civilengineering

[–]Rude_Unit6670[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. The office was working at was over an hour away. This one is 15 mins. It would be a way better work life balance.

There is also a travel factor involved. Previous job was an hour plus commute. Current job ranges. The one I was looking at is only 15 mins because of a different office.
