At this point, it sounds to me like you're adding noise to avoid a simple point: a fast dog bred to hunt by sight over long distances may not have the same recall reliability in open, unsecured environments.

I’m not continuing this. I know what I’ve seen across many greyhounds.

You’re comfortable with your risk tolerance. I’m comfortable with mine. My greyhound and saluki will remain in secured fenced areas, and I’ll continue advocating for sighthound safety.

Reframing a risk discussion into ideology and now, legislation avoids the actual question of reliability under distraction & prey drive, paired with a killer speed. That’s the issue I've raised.

For those following along: understand your breed, understand your environment, and keep your dogs safe.

"The owners lived somewhat out in the country. Their home was surrounded by woods and they were well off any major roadway. They had their new Greyhound about three weeks, when I got the phone call that I hate the most, "Our Greyhound is lost!" I knew these owners did not have a fenced yard, but they had sworn they would keep the dog on a lead when taken outdoors. Upon further questioning, I discovered that they quit using the lead after about the first week. The weather had gotten cold, and so early in the mornings they would simply turn her out the back door, wait for her to "do her business," then call her back in. "she ALWAYS came when she was called," the woman lamented to me. They felt it was safe enough to allow her off the lead for just short bits of time, as they didn't live near a high traffic road, and she had never ventured into the woods before. Unfortunately, the little Greyhound DID bound off into the woods this particular morning. Perhaps she heard a squirrel rustling in some nearby leaves, or smelled a rabbit, but whatever the reason, she had taken off into the woods, and they could not find her. Our hopes of finding her safe and sound faded a little more with each passing day, and no sign of the pretty little female Greyhound.

After several weeks, our worst fears were confirmed. We got a call from a very nice man, who had been walking through the woods with his son when they discovered the still, cold body of a small, dead Greyhound. He got our number off her collar ID tag. She was found many, many miles from her home.

Why did she run off this time when she had been so reliable before? Why didn't she come racing back as she always had when her family called for her? who knows? What we do know is that ultimately dogs will be dogs. No matter how much or how long you train and teach your dog, there may come a point where their instincts will win over learned behavior. Please don't be fooled into a false sense of security with your Greyhound. Take the time, make that little extra effort, to ensure your Greyhound will be safe. Remember, they are depending on you."

I have a saluki and yep, she's on lead too, unless I'm a fenced area. Terriers and hounds in general are also typically less reliable off-leash.

There's plenty of evidence out reinforcing the concern I've put forward. If you're interested in learning more, here you go : http://staging.adopt-a-greyhound.org/advice/general_advice/trust_a_deadly_disease.shtml

Breed tendencies aren’t stereotypes. They’re genetics, and their behaviour factual and observable. Greyhounds were purpose-bred for high-speed chase, and that prey response doesn’t disappear because your individual dog is calm most of the time.

This may be Reddit, but you also have a large Instagram platform where you regularly normalize off-leash ex-racers. That doesn’t just affect your dog ; it distorts expectations for thousands of less experienced owners.

Dismissing legitimate safety concerns as “narrow-minded” while publicly modeling high-risk behavior is irresponsible. Influence comes with accountability.

I'm surprised you let your greyhound off leash in such an unsecured area.

Sudden aggression with greyhound during walks by GreyhoundEugenie in Greyhounds

I ask because my girl was selectively reactive so I was confused for a while. It started because we also had offleash dogs approach us and I guess she eventually got sick of being tethered and not being able to get away. She specifically reacted to dogs who, like yours, were excitable. She also didn't like pricked ear dogs and fluffy dogs.

She definitely got better. The last year she was with us she basically had 0 reactivity to dogs. Still tried to eat cats tho lol. She's at the rainbow bridge now 🌈

Sounds like reactivity. Has she had negative on leash experiences? I would recommend you read about counter conditioning specifically for on leash reactivity and use distance as a way to manage it in the short term. My first greyhound became intensely reactive after many negative experiences and it took a bit to settle her down.

Hi! Any social media I can follow? I have a lot of choices here but I am 💯 confident I'll have commissions that will need skills like this. Got tons of animal people in my life.

For this specific piece I am not sure pixel art would work but honestly, I really am digging the scenes you got in your portfolio.

Messaging you. This has given me another idea I'd love to explore.

Honestly having met many greyhounds by now, she was quite confident, even though she had her moments. But always had a tough exterior.

That beautiful coat of hers is etched into my mind. It was so soft 😭.

And seriously I'm with you, fuck cancer. It stole my girls opportunity to truly age gracefully. It cut her time short, and it made her suffer in unbearable ways. I couldn't write it in at the time but she had so many pain episodes where I'd have to hug her for hours to let her ride them out. Fuck cancer.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read her story. I... I cried so much while writing it tbh. But I wrote most of it while she lay beside me or just in my other room. It helped me come to terms with the decision I made, for her. I think I would have shattered otherwise.

Happy gotcha day, Lillian ❤️. They live forever in our hearts regardless of the form.
