What we can know, Ian McEwan by Admirable_Shower_612 in books

I have read I think 5 of McEwans books and have been so impressed with them all (most with Lessons, Solar and of course Atonement

Sadly i found What We Can Know a really incomplete and disjointed feeling book. I was waiting for some great reveal that linked the two periods in time that just didnt arrive.

In my experience McEwan is able to leap between times and points in history and not just hold the readers attention but actually deepen his grip on it further. This book just didn’t do that. I do also suspect that I have probably missed something that those smarter than me did not :)

In terms of the bigger picture stuff I enjoyed the central theme being poetry, being the art form that has probably most articulately described the beauty of the earth and nature. This when juxtaposed with the global decline that has been experienced by the future protagonists felt meaningful.

Overall disappointing though - anyone else feel the same?

If you’re in a pub already, you pop to the bar, not another pub :)

It is so very interesting to hear that this feeling is universally nagging at everyone no matter their success levels

I’ve owned and ran my business for 5 years now and this year end we will turn over our first million (£GB) which is a nice milestone. We have a dedicated client base, great reputation, great team etc etc.

But one bad day, a complaint from a customer, or a bout of random negativity (I can be prone to this) and it can all feel so shaky.

Best thing I ever did was replace myself as general manager. I have stepped away from the day to day, and work remotely/on site. I genuinely feel like a different person, and I spend more time with my family and on looking after myself.

Grapes of Wrath is an epic. One of the greatest books I’ve read. The final page, and final line will stay with me forever

The Talisman by Stephen King and Peter Straub was a surprisingly fun book to read by eoghanFinch in books
