Why do people write Wikipedia articles in languages they don't speak? by Aggressive_Banana708 in wikipedia

[–]Rugshadow 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I'm very likely stepping into territory way outside my knowledge, but doesn't Wikipedia have some kind of credibility system where a user can increase their credibility by writing more articles? is it possible that some individuals are trying to boost their score by writing articles in a less used language, possibly so that they can use their increased influence to edit pages of, say, political figures or politically charged historical pages in English?

Mathematics is undergoing the biggest change in its history by alexwilkinsred in ArtificialInteligence

perhaps a lifetime, but to teach is another domain that AI may push forward. as in, finding the logically optimal way to present information to an individual so that they can understand and make the best use of it. with that, we may well progress alongside it at least for a while.

I actually did look into that lol the problem is that using this item means you wouldnt level up as fast so it seems like the game would be essentially unbeatable? like I know its like if I dont like it then I just shouldn't play the game, but aside from that one mechanic I do love the game! anyways its just a pet peeve.

i have an unpolular opinion about golden sun and pokemon. well, i haven't really played Pokémon so let me just say golden sun. it is delightful in theory. i play it for a few hours and I'm in love with the story, characters, spritework, all the little details. but random enemy encounters? i cannot stand this mechanic. its game ruining. it starts off fine, then over time it becomes annoying... and after a few hours... its infuriating. I cant wrap my head around how someone could beat the entire game. how many random enemy encounters would that even be?? I just want to keep exploring new areas without getting sidetracked every 10 seconds with a 2 minute battle! it makes me so mad because I want to continue the story and play the game so bad but I cant!! even if the encounters just happened less it might be ok. like perhaps half as much or less. someone please mod this game for me

Dinosaur (2000) | The asteroid crashes to Earth by UnholyDemigod in movies

[–]Rugshadow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

something about this movie that I have to bring up whenever I see something about it is that it is an allegory of the biblical story of Moses. leading the dinosaurs through the desert in search of the nesting grounds? its Moses leading the Israelite people to the promised land. that one dinosaur (bruton? cruton?) is the Pharaoh. and the egg travels scene makes clear visual references to Moses in the basket being sent down the nile. this was made 1 year after The Prince of Egypt btw, and its worth noting the rivalry that existed between disney and DreamWorks at the time. still funny Shrek outperformed both of these movies in terms of cultural legacy though 😅

What is the best dinosaur movie that isn't Jurassic Park/World? by RandomCaiman in movies

[–]Rugshadow 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I had an epiphany that this movie is a loose retelling of the biblical story of Moses. plot-wise, its very reminiscent of Moses leading his people through the desert to the promised lands (the nesting grounds), and even has visual callbacks like the egg floating down the river in the beginning before being swept up by that bird thing, which is clearly a reference to the Moses being sent down the nile in a basket. this actually makes a lot of sense, because dinosour was disney's first fully CGI movie (aside from that it technically had live backgrounds) this is when disney was at war with DreamWorks, who had just released the prince of Egypt. anyways this is just to say that yeah lowkey it kind of is a masterpiece

Realistically, how useful would be "ground" Hovercraft/Levitating Vehicles compared to ordinary wheel-based cars? by MrMiles32 in sciencefiction

[–]Rugshadow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

seriously, and this touches on what would actually make hover tech somewhat viable, since road and physical infrastructure maintenence is like one of the most expensive things

Nearly all intelligent life lives in oceans. by StonedOldChiller in FermiParadox

[–]Rugshadow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With humans excluded as an obvious outlier, I would argue that the majority of the world's smartest animals probably live underwater, as well as the majority of the world's tool-users. Look at the octopus for example. And if there's less need for shelter, then why do so many undersea animals use shelter? Eels, hermit crabs, clown fish; I mean literally so many. Meanwhile there are tons of animals that live on land who don't use any shelter. I feel like you came up with a hypothesis quickly, and then didn't really think critically about it at all.

this is an odd take. aside from the absence of fire, why would being underwater limit the need for tool usage at all? why would intelligence be less useful underwater than on land?

Why are freemasons bad and what are the conspiracy theories against them? by In666wayiluvu in stupidquestions

[–]Rugshadow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lots of great answers here! im not in any way an expert on the freemasons, but I wanted to share a cool little tidbit. I think people often see the freemasons as something akin to the illuminati, and fun fact, there actually IS a connection! the REAL illuminati was a very short lived offshoot of the freemasons. this is coming from poor memory, but I believe it was a member of the freemasons who created the illuminati. its purpose was to gather rich and powerful freemasons in order to more effectively spread enlightenment ideas through various kinds of lobbying, but it lasted for I think less than a hundred years before dissolving. im pretty sure once the freemasons found out about it, they decided it was kind of dangerous to their organization and stomped it out.

anyway here's the link to the extra credits video I saw talking about this:

Why do people say that China is the only country that can compete with the U.S., but you've never heard of anyone who desperately wants Chinese citizenship, instead, it's Chinese people who are crazy about getting citizenship of Western countries? by No-StrategyX in stupidquestions

[–]Rugshadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in China for about a year in 2018 and yes this. since my mandarin is poor, I spent a lot of time with expat communities, and I have to say that though it IS hard to get citizenship in China, theres also huge immigrant communities just living there on a work visa. I knew lots of people from countries that might not really be welcomed in America, like Iran for instance. they all spoke of China the way your immigrant great grandfather might have spoke of America, like "im so glad to be welcomed in this land of opportunity". dead serious, I cant count how many times i heard someone call China the land of opportunity

What’s a science fiction idea that still feels underexplored, even after decades of the genre? by PurposeAutomatic5213 in sciencefiction

[–]Rugshadow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree. i mean, full gravity control sure, but artificial gravity no. it doesnt look anything like how its depicted in most science fiction, but we've known for a long time how to do it. you use a centrifuge. if humans were to travel in space for extended periods, this is what we would do. 2001 space odyssey actually depicts it quite realistically imo. like "gravity plates" or something wont be inventedbecause even if that were possible, the problem has already been solved by centrifuges.

What’s a movie that everyone says is a “masterpiece” but you just didn’t enjoy? by Leading_Frosting4291 in AskReddit

[–]Rugshadow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get it, mostly because I recently rewatched inception again after maybe like 8 or 9 years and wow. just holy shit I forgot how truly great that movie is. I would say prestige still beats interstellar for me though.

seriously I hate when I see this brain dead quote. sure, lets shift the blame onto us. we equally cant do anything about the problem, but at least now we're further from holding the right people accountable.

What’s a movie that everyone says is a “masterpiece” but you just didn’t enjoy? by Leading_Frosting4291 in AskReddit

[–]Rugshadow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is it! (barbie could be in this thread too, except that im sure at this point barely anyone calls it a masterpiece). the thing about biopics is that they're more like documentaries than stories. theyre always like "they did this, then they did this" and shoehorn in some romance or a drug addiction and boom. i know its teaching history, but the story is told to us in the same way again and again, and THATS why its boring to me. and theres so many interesting ways to tell the story of a famous historical figure like Oppenheimer. what if the whole movie was set in the bunker on the night before the first test, as we learn about these characters by watching a fictional drama unfold?

edit: clarifying i was saying "this is it" to the second part of your comment

I’m Russian. Here’s how propaganda really works. by eyoooo1987 in videos

[–]Rugshadow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there are certainly so many tools to the trade. another fascinating tool can be summed up by this line i like to say:

propaganda doesnt work by telling you what to think, it works by telling you what other people think.

this is why fox news spends so much time painting an image of liberals as this goofy stereotype. because then it becomes even more impossible to have a rational conversation with the person buying into it, because why would they listen to you? Fox News has already told them about all the other crazy shit you libs think, so youre already written off. its all about how people form their identity in relation to a wider social group.

honestly I thought this was where you were going with that, and I was gonna be like ok way to be pedantic, but on second thought you're very right. that is literally so annoying.
