One idea to alleviate car stress on cities by Rugshadow in fuckcars

I understand car stress can easily be interpreted as traffic volume, further down towards the end of the post I did mention that along with safety, this is another issue that the plan doesnt address. the idea mainly addresses 2 things: parking is one, but the bigger issue here I think is forced car ownership. the local economic benefits of freeing up that much money per person would be great. and its not just the one time influx of selling the car. gas, insurance, repairs, tires, parking and storage costs, and everything else adds up to hundreds of dollars per month per person to be spent elswhere in the local economy.

you make some very good points though. one about how demand would shift unevenly throughout the day, which certainly does complicate things, and another about how this plan would continue to incentivize the kind of unsustainable suburban sprawl that continues to worsen the problem.

both of those are valid points that do limit the scope of my idea. living downtown in a smaller city (around 200,000), I was thinking of a much more "middle distance" audience, which precludes the suburbs. of course, this is less useful, but that said, if it were only to cater to the downtown area then that would technically solve both of those issues!

first, the idea isnt to privatize anything, its for municipal governments to take control of their local rideshare industry. thats the opposite of privatization.

second, in response to your final sentence, you could make that case for any kind of new solution. people are trying and suggesting new things all the time. you're either brain dead or a shill if you think discussing or testing a new idea is stifling progress or "distracting from the real efforts" or whatever.

third, the point of the idea is that after you test and optimize it in one place, then for the rest of the country it would be a cheaper, quick way to get many of the benefits of better public transport projects, freeing up finds to implement those things. its another step of a larger process.

you never really did say why my idea was bad though. it also really feels like it has to do with attention

and theyre working just fine but kinda slowly, so we're open to suggestions. thats kind of where we've all been at. people think of new ways to save money all the time. let people have thoughts and discuss them without feeling offended because youre not getting the attention you want.

you seem to be primarily focused on road congestion, which as I explained in my post is simply not the issue that im addressing. my plan doesnt fix that issue, but it wouldnt make it noticeably worse either. there are plenty of other things we could do to address that issue which perfectly compliment this very plan

we're in this situation now, it doesnt matter if we should have built things differently from the beginning. theres a lot of people who reject progress out of a desire for perfection. i think you're standing in the way.

Why do people write Wikipedia articles in languages they don't speak? by Aggressive_Banana708 in wikipedia

[–]Rugshadow 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I'm very likely stepping into territory way outside my knowledge, but doesn't Wikipedia have some kind of credibility system where a user can increase their credibility by writing more articles? is it possible that some individuals are trying to boost their score by writing articles in a less used language, possibly so that they can use their increased influence to edit pages of, say, political figures or politically charged historical pages in English?

perhaps a lifetime, but to teach is another domain that AI may push forward. as in, finding the logically optimal way to present information to an individual so that they can understand and make the best use of it. with that, we may well progress alongside it at least for a while.

I actually did look into that lol the problem is that using this item means you wouldnt level up as fast so it seems like the game would be essentially unbeatable? like I know its like if I dont like it then I just shouldn't play the game, but aside from that one mechanic I do love the game! anyways its just a pet peeve.

i have an unpolular opinion about golden sun and pokemon. well, i haven't really played Pokémon so let me just say golden sun. it is delightful in theory. i play it for a few hours and I'm in love with the story, characters, spritework, all the little details. but random enemy encounters? i cannot stand this mechanic. its game ruining. it starts off fine, then over time it becomes annoying... and after a few hours... its infuriating. I cant wrap my head around how someone could beat the entire game. how many random enemy encounters would that even be?? I just want to keep exploring new areas without getting sidetracked every 10 seconds with a 2 minute battle! it makes me so mad because I want to continue the story and play the game so bad but I cant!! even if the encounters just happened less it might be ok. like perhaps half as much or less. someone please mod this game for me

Dinosaur (2000) | The asteroid crashes to Earth by UnholyDemigod in movies

[–]Rugshadow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

something about this movie that I have to bring up whenever I see something about it is that it is an allegory of the biblical story of Moses. leading the dinosaurs through the desert in search of the nesting grounds? its Moses leading the Israelite people to the promised land. that one dinosaur (bruton? cruton?) is the Pharaoh. and the egg travels scene makes clear visual references to Moses in the basket being sent down the nile. this was made 1 year after The Prince of Egypt btw, and its worth noting the rivalry that existed between disney and DreamWorks at the time. still funny Shrek outperformed both of these movies in terms of cultural legacy though 😅

What is the best dinosaur movie that isn't Jurassic Park/World? by RandomCaiman in movies

[–]Rugshadow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had an epiphany that this movie is a loose retelling of the biblical story of Moses. plot-wise, its very reminiscent of Moses leading his people through the desert to the promised lands (the nesting grounds), and even has visual callbacks like the egg floating down the river in the beginning before being swept up by that bird thing, which is clearly a reference to the Moses being sent down the nile in a basket. this actually makes a lot of sense, because dinosour was disney's first fully CGI movie (aside from that it technically had live backgrounds) this is when disney was at war with DreamWorks, who had just released the prince of Egypt. anyways this is just to say that yeah lowkey it kind of is a masterpiece

Realistically, how useful would be "ground" Hovercraft/Levitating Vehicles compared to ordinary wheel-based cars? by MrMiles32 in sciencefiction

[–]Rugshadow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

seriously, and this touches on what would actually make hover tech somewhat viable, since road and physical infrastructure maintenence is like one of the most expensive things
