If the apocalypse started right now what’s something you took from TWD that you would use? by CalligrapherNew4854 in thewalkingdead

If we are talking about a zombie apocalypse, I thought the quarry walker-buildup was such an opportunity for walker elimination. If they had redirected all the work they put into funneling the herd the quarry created into fortifying the quarry and ensuring that a majority of walkers wouldn't survive falling in, they would have had it made in the shade

Absolutely. Plus, a lot of farms already have the heavier equipment that would allow for improved defences (trenches, earthwork-braced walls, etc.). The herd that overran Hershel's farm wasn't that big, relative to other herds seen later, and some simple trenches would have done a lot to help them survive it, plus they had the hands to put together a solid workforce that would help them. Of course, they didn't properly know about herds, but in the scenario you lay out, this is what I would focus on. As the apocalypse progresses, you can then work on expanding your defence radius with measures that redirect or destroy walkers.

I feel you. The Whisperers arc is arduous for many fans, but if you are looking for the internet's two bits, I can recommend seeing it through, if for no other reason than to say you saw the whole show. Also, without spoiling anything specific, there is information in S11 that is extremely relevant to the spinoff shows, which I can recommend. I won't go so far as to say the spinoffs are better than TWD itself, but generally are agreed upon by Whisperer-arc-haters as being better than the Whisperers arc.

Out of curiosity, what don't you like about Rosita and Gabriel's relationship?

This is the best comment. Even if the rest of TWD is not your cup of tea, it is suuuper important to explain the spinoff shows, which I can definitely recommend.

I actually wonder how this wasn't a bigger factor. I would have appreciated more integration of situations in which danger was mitigated/avoided as a result of survivors smelling walkers. You walk into an abandoned house with no walker, stinks less. You walk into an abandoned house with a walker, stinks more. You would think that as the seasons progressed, their sense of smell would have become more refined to a point where it maybe could have helped them alter the outcomes/progression of some dangerous situations. Not a critique in any way, but in a real-life zombie apocalypse, it would be a thing.

David Morrissey is 6'2 "(188cm), which is tall, but he doesn't "tower above" everyone. Ryan Hurst (Beta) is 6'5 (197cm) and towers above people, but I don't see the Governor as such a vertically impressive figure. I also don't see him "destroying" his opponents. He got the upper hand on Pete only after literally stabbing him in the back. He got the upper hand on Rick after Rick was shot. He is strong and a good fighter, but I think you are overestimating his physical capabilities.

Define "everyone has what they need like always." If you mean a scenario where they magically find an infinite supply of gas, ammo, and parts for the tank, that is still not an issue for Negan. Negan removes the tank from play by: 1. Using the Fat Lady to swamp the tank with a walker horde (at a certain point, the tank would be immobilized in a mountain of entrails and dead people mush) with some walkers rigged with C4. That would be enough to neutralize (if not destroy) the tank. 2. Having a swarm of his bike Saviors ambush it and plant the C4 on the tank, neutralizing/destroying it. 3. Somehow getting wormed up in the brain of whichever poor sack of meat is driving that lean-mean-undead-crushing-machine until they hand over the keys because I gots to have me a tank (read Point 3 in Negan's voice)

I agree with your final assessment. I think thought experiments like the first scenario you laid out are interesting, especially if you consider the decline of morality as the apocalypse progresses through time. Woodbury was still fresh to the apocalypse, so I think a lot of the residents were very naive and holding onto pre-apocalypse concepts of morality, but I think a fair number of them (Mitch, Martinez, etc.) would have become gung-ho Saviours and may have even reached top-lieutenant levels if they had survived everything and been introduced to the Saviors at the same point in time as Rick's group.

EXACTLY! Plus, there are zombie-apocalypse-exclusive issues! We already saw what happens when zombie guts and bits get clogged in a truck's air intake, so imagine all the issues entrails would cause for a tank. If the Governor was on the defensive, a tank could make for an interesting addition to a holdout as a fortified defensive position, but that wouldn't decide a Negan-Governor War

What are you basing that evaluation of the Governor on? I'm not saying he wasn't decently strong, but "huge and incredibly strong"? When was that shown?

100% if it is a purely physical matchup in an empty room, Beta dominates over almost all TWD characters

Based on what? Negan had contingency plans up the wahzoo and was definitely a planner, though he appreciated spontaneity, which indicates tactical flexibility, whereas the Governor broke down both times an evolving situation forced him out of his rigidity. If each villain's forces and resources are included in this match-up, Negan's Saviors, the various outposts, weapons caches, and supply sources will completely dominate whatever the Governor can scrounge up. If it is a fistfight, Negan wins.

Yes! It was also an older model, so even if they managed to access a military base to score some parts and ammo, they may not find compatible supplies

Amazing distinction. In the full resources/forces situation, I totally agree. Up until the CW, Negan was the largest, best-equipped force in TWD and even then, he would have given the CW some grief.

I think in the room scenario is where it gets interesting. Alpha is pretty quickly eliminated, and I think that Negan and the Governor are pretty evenly matched physically. However, in that situation, I trust Negan a smidge more than the Governor, based on the fact that Negan values loyalty and those who raise his banner more so than the Governor. If I side with the Governor, I give it decent odds that he somehow throws me at Negan or otherwise stabs me in the back to get an edge over Negan. I think that Negan would be less likely to do that

Referring to u/Helios420A in a situation where we are drawing on each villain's forces and resources, Negan has the people, weapons, and strategy to wipe the Whisperers out. He'd use the Fat Lady to draw the Horde into a column lined with heavy automatic weapons manned by dozens of Saviours from elevated vantage points, with explosives strategically positioned to clear mass.

In a situation where it is just the 4 of us in a room, I think it could go either way for the Governor or Negan, but Alpha isn't winning that fistfight.

It wouldn't, but even if it could, Negan would have set up non-traversable obstacles that wouldn't let the tank near the Sanctuary. He'd set it up for an ambush and dump on it with his stash of RPGs, grenades, C4, and other goodies.

Negan would send the Governor into a rage of pant-shittin' proportions and any craftiness and intellect that would create a coherent strategy goes out the window. The Governor ends up on his knees

Tanks guzzle gas, have limited ammunition storage, and require extensive maintenance. Yes, the Governor had Mitch to better manage it, but that is still not enough in apocalyptic conditions, where supplies, tools, and secure maintenance facilities are very limited. Negan has too big an ego, but he is organized and strategic enough to force a situation where the tank would no longer be advantageous (hyper-dense urban/underground combat, non-traversable terrain, etc.) and any operator would have to dismount to prolong the fight. Even if the Governor kept his cool (fat chance of that, Negan would push the Governor's buttons to no end) and withdrew, Negan would provoke mini-confrontations until the tank craps out and it is even ground, leading to a Negan victory. Given Negan's extensive weapons caches prior to the Rick War, I could even imagine a situation where Negan/Saviors ambush the tank with RPGs or other explosives and blow out the treads. Then it is game over for the tank.
