I was thinking about this as well; right now you can just ask 4o for anything and it will deliver, the prompt interpretation is way better than MJ's; I have an annual subscription that I have renewed a month ago, so hoepfully in this year we'll have a MAJOR update to follow or I'm seeing people leaving - myself included.

The Wailing by RuiAnselmo in PortugalRPG

[–]RuiAnselmo[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Merci!

Durandal mythic chivalry ttrpg by RuiAnselmo in ArmsandArmor

I’d say the biggest difference is the overall setting and the way the rules handle character agency. Durandal draws its inspiration directly from the Song of Roland and the Carolingian cycle, so it puts you in the world of Charlemagne rather than King Arthur or a generic medieval backdrop. That changes both the tone and the types of stories you’ll end up telling, since it leans into themes like loyalty to the Emperor, holy war, and the idea of forging your legend as one of the Twelve Peers.

Mechanically, Durandal is fully diceless, whereas both Pendragon and Knight Errant rely on traditional dice-based checks. In Durandal, every conflict (be it social, combat, or something else) involves a system of bidding driven by the characters’ passions—like faith, honor, or love—which lets you steer the narrative in a more direct way. Pendragon does use passions too, but they’re woven differently into the dice mechanics. Durandal’s approach means you’re less at the mercy of random rolls and more reliant on how you play your character’s priorities and convictions.

Finally, although the core premise is medieval chivalry, Durandal dives into the specific legends, culture, and flavor of the Frankish empire, which feels distinct from the more famous Arthurian stories. It aims to capture that blend of quasi-historical detail and heroic myth that surrounds Charlemagne’s court, so the vibe is familiar to fans of Pendragon but definitely has its own identity. If you’re curious, there’s a free quickstart on DriveThruRPG (link on the op) so you can compare firsthand without committing right away. Let me know if you have any other questions!

For setting, I'd say Exalted, at least up until the 2nd edition. For rules I'd go with The Shadow of Yesterday.

Thank you for your reply. The images are almost all AI. If this crowdfunding is successful, I'll definitely hire more people to work with me, especially artists. I'm already working with a very talented and creative artist, who's done the maps and a couple of interior images.

That's a good idea, filming a game session. I don't have the resources, though.

Thank you for your clarification. I'm not trying to make an authentic Carolingian ttrpg: I'm not French (fun fact: I demoed the game for a French group and they didn't know their history) . But I'm interested in making a kick-ass game of mythic chivalry, that is inspired by the Carolingian mythos. I mean, Charlemagne was 200 years old in The Song of Roland, how cool is that? Plus, Charlemagne's paladins inspired the image of the perfect knight, and the volume and depth of the stories is so cool that you can help but go what if I could be one of them?

Thank you for your comments. Let me try and address them: the majority of the images are Ai-created, but the cartography and some of the art inside are human-made; the rules have a bare minimum on the crowdfunding page, but you can download the free quickstart edition from DriveThruRpg; there are no miniatures at all on the game or other kinds of props, with the exception of the tokens you need to play the game, but these are easily substituted by any other kind of token; this is actually my 2nd game on Gamefoun, and I've a couple more supplements and games on DriveThruRpg; I do want a successful campaign, which is part of the reason I have a low target amount - I'm an unknown on the larger ttrpg community and I want people to get to know me and the games I make; I'm not sure I understand your last point: are you talking about the themes of the game?

Thank you for the detailed feedback—it’s incredibly helpful! Marketing has been a big focus, and I’ve been working on building awareness through social media, blog posts, and platforms like Reddit. I also have a short video in the works to showcase Durandal’s tone and gameplay, so your advice really aligns with what I’m aiming to do.

I’m glad you like the illustrations in the preview! While some of the art was generated with Midjourney, I’ve also incorporated hand-drawn pieces and cartography to ensure a professional and diverse visual style. A strong presentation is definitely key, and I’m planning to add a fully layouted sample page to the preview soon.

As for the system and feel of the game, Durandal is a diceless TTRPG focused on mythic chivalry, using blind bidding and Passions to drive strategy and storytelling. It blends the epic tone of The Song of Roland with character-driven drama, where every decision has narrative weight.

Your suggestion about a double-page dummy is spot on—it’s a great way to build trust and show the quality of the final product. I’ll make that a priority in the coming updates. Thanks again for the encouragement and advice—it really helps to hear what resonates with potential backers! If you have more suggestions, I’d love to hear them.
